I was worried I was going to be held back for not being at school for weeks on end. I told Erin of my perdicament and all she did was laugh.
"What's so funny?" I asked.
"Don't worry about, Adam hacked the teachers what nots and changed all your absents and grades, you'll be okay," she said with a simple shrug.
"Seriously?" I asked surprised.
"Yeah," she said. I smiled at Adam's kindness and the next day I found myself knocking on his door.
Adam opened the door looking slighty disheveled and extremely sad. At the sight of him, I gave him a huge hug and screeched right in his ear. When I let go he looked shocked.
"Aubrey?" he asked softly. I nodded with a huge smile.
"OH MY GOSH! AUBREY!" he screamed and then we had another hug.
"AUBREY!" I heard Emily,Adam's mom, scream. Then the hug was joined by Dad and Emily, my step- mom.
"Where have you been?" Emily asked.
"In John Harrison's house, didn't you know?" I asked.
"No, everyone was hiding it from me," she replied looking sad.
"Well someone should have told you," I said fake glaring at my dad and brother.
"It doesn't matter," Emily said, "You're okay and that's all we need."
She wrapped me in a hug.
"How did you manage to get out?" Dad asked.
I sat down and began the story but before I could start the doors opened and in came Jessie and Lauren. They screamed when they saw me and I did too.
"AUBREY!" they shouted together and flung their arms around me. We cried and screamed and finally sat down as I began the story of how I had gotten away from John Harrison.
When I was done it was deathly silent. Then, with tears streaming down his face, Adam hugged me.
"I'm sorry," he said. I knew he was apologizing for everything he had done.
"It's okay," I said with a smile.
"I can't believe you made it out," Jessie said staring proudly at me.
"If it werem't for ya'll, I don't know were I would be," I replied honestly.
"I think you would've been able to do it by yourself," Lauren argued.
"Naw," I said.
"Yes, you're so hard- headed you would have gotten away sooner or later," Dad replied.
"Well thanks Dad," I said sarcastically.
"It's partly true," Erin said waltzing into the room in jeans and a boyfriend shirt with a tacky brown western belt sinched to tight at the middle of her waist.
"Erin what are you wearing?" I whisper- shouted. She began to answer mer but I cut her off.
"Excuse us, we're going to Erin's house," I said over Erin's quite protest, "Shut up Erin!"
"Can we come?" Emily asked.
"Sure, ya'll can come if you want," I replied with a shrug. I grabbed Erin's arm and dragged her to the car while she protested.
"Erin please shut up," I said kindly, "Now give me the keys."
She handed them over after a staring contest (that I won) and we slid into the seats.
Fifteen minutes later, everyone was gathered in Erin's large living room. I dragged her upstairs and to her new closet. I grabbed a pair of black jeans and a green graphic tee. Erin slid them over her head and seconds later I was back in the closet looking for something else. I grabbed a purple, blue, and pink plaid, deep v- neck, long shirt and a white- silver wide belt.
I walked down the stairs with Erin following me seconds later. Everyone's eyes were on the TV but the minute Erin walked in, their eyes turned to her.
"Wow that's amazing," Emily relished.
"Thank you," I said with a smile.
"Oh, the reason I came over was I wanted to ask if all you would have dinner here tomorrow night?" Erin asked.
"Yeah," Emily said, "We'll be there."
"I'll be there. My parents too?" Lauren asked.
"Of course," Erin replied.
"Let me ask my parents," Jessie said.
"Don't worry, I already asked them and they said you're coming," Erin informed.
I didn't think this invitation was extended to me and I stayed silent.
"And Aubrey, your Mom said you were coming and she would be there to," Erin added when I said nothing.
"Seriously?" I asked, surprised.
"Yeah," Erin said like it was obvious, "You thought I wasn't inviting you?"
"Well... sorta," I said cringing.
"Of course you're invited," Adam interjected with a slight frown.
"Thanks," I said, "I have to go. Mom wanted to take me somewhere."
"See ya tomorrow," Lauren said with a salute.
"Bye," Emily said with a hug.
The next morning I woke up super excited. The day before, Mom and I had gone to buy a car. Actually, to buy both of us a car. She had gotten tons of money from work and other unknown sources. I bought a Mercedez Benz SLK350 convertable in black and Mom got a Lexus SC430 convertible also in black.
I ate breakfast with Mom, it was the first in a very long time. Then I took a long shower, loving the feel of the water dripping down my back. I rearranged my room and while rearranging I remembered Grettie, the house maid from John Harrison's house. I got in my car and drove to his house and rang the door bell.
"Hello Grettie," I said when the petite strawberry blonde opened.
"Oh my, Aubrey," she said and gave me a hug. Once she had pulled away she said, "I'm so proud of you."
"Why?" I asked.
"Because there are many girls who come here and are never seen again," she replied, "They end up dead or like me, a maid."
"Really?" I asked.
"Yes, there are five others who are maids," she said.
"Well you're no longer maids," I said, "He's dead and you can go where ever you want."
She smiled and tears sprang into her blue eyes.
"How?" was all she asked. I knew she meant how he died.
"He messed with my mom and I killed him," I said without pity.
"Thank you," she said and gave me another hug.
"No problem," I said with a kind smile.
"So what are you going to do now that you don't have to work here?" I asked.
"I'm going to live with my daughter and sister," she said.
"Well please keep in touch," I said, "I have to go, but you will call me?"
"Of course I'll call, just give you my number," she replied handing me her phone. I typed in the number and then began to walk down the steps.
"Aubrey, there are some clothes up their I would like you to have," Grettie called after me. I looked back at her and the house, thinking whether or not I should take them.
"Please," Grettie begged. I nodded and jogged back up the steps to the house. Grettie dissapeared and a few minutes later she came back with an arm load of clothes.
Later that night, I was back home getting ready for the dinner. I took a shower, washed my hair, and curled it (with the clam shells I had taken.) I dressed in a pink mini- skirt with black leggings, a black shirt and a white jeans jacket. I did my make up carefully, airbrushing it and making it look natural.
"Aubrey hurry up!" Mom shouted loudly up at me.
"Coming," I said. I grabbed a pair of silver open- toed wedges, slipped them on, and ran down the stairs. We drove quickly to Erin's house and pulled in at the same time as Lauren.
In the foyer, Erin was making introductions. I met Dr. Keith again, and his wife Roxanne Keith. Jessie's parents were Kmberly McAllistar and Adam McAllistar. I already new Adam's parents so it wasn't an actual introduction except for with my mom. She was being nice but I knew being in the same room with my dad was killing her.
"So why are we having dinner?" Lauren asked.
"Lauren!" Roxanne chastised.
"What?" Lauren asked with a shrug of her shoulders.
"It's okay Roxanne," Erin assured, "The dinner is to celebrate that Aubrey's back and because I wanted to just have us all meet and get together.
"When are we eating?" I asked. Mom gave me a sharp glance that I pretended not to notice.
"How about now," Erin suggested.
"Sounds good," Jessie said and we all scurried to the dining room. Soon we were all eating and laughing and having tons of fun.
"Hey, I wanna give a toast to Aubrey," Dad said standing. Everyone stood up and Dad said, "A toast to Aubrey."
"A toast," everyone followed in suit. I looked down but clinked glasses with the rest of them. Then we moved to the living room and started chatting. Minutes later, we again were getting silent.
"Erin will you please come here?" Adam asked standing in the middle of the room.
"Sure," Erin said unccertanly but got up and walked over.
Sliding on one knee Adam said, "Erin you're my best friend and the best girlfriend. Will you marry me?"
Erin was crying and she nodded and said, "Yes!"
He slipped a diamond ring over her finger and Erin pulled him up and they kissed patienently. Everyone was cheering and all the 'women' in the house had already begun planning for the wedding.
Erin was getting married!
