It was a placid summer night. However, there was a storm inside her, tearing her apart. April was in her bedroom, curled up on her bed in pain. How can life be so unfair to her? She thought. Being this close to death when she wasn't even eighteen... The doctors have told her about her heart disease and how she has only one month to live, if they can't find a replacement.

April was crying on her bed again. Even though her heart was in pain, there was something else that was hurting her even more than her heart. It was her boy friend Michael. She loved him so much and he liked her too, tears dropped down from her swollen eyes to her cheeks. At least that's what he told her a month ago before he knew about her condition. He must have loved her. No he loved her. She was sure. "I may be not that rich but I have a heart that loves you so much." "I can only give those to you", she remembered him saying when they went on their first date.

All April wanted was to love and be loved in return. What could she expect more, with a diseased heart? Just Michael, loving her was enough for her. She got up from her bed and gazed herself in the mirror. Then, she blamed her condition to be the reason of their break up. She even thought of him maybe having another lover. One that is more beautiful, healthier and will be with him forever...

"Well who would want to love a girl like me who has a disease in her heart and will die next month", she said looking at herself pathetically in the mirror but to be honest saying it out loud sure was worse than just thinking about it inside and was enough to make her condition worse.

The most depressing thing for her was losing her hair. Her long beautiful blond hair that shone like gold in the light... She felt so sad that her beautiful blond hair was falling off from her head like yellow leafs on trees in autumn. She liked her hair because Michael did too. He used to stroke her hair gently and tell her how he likes the way it shines in light, how soft it is and how beautiful it smells. So for April, each of her falling hair felt like a stab to her heart.

She got up and looked at herself in the mirror again and hoped if only she could be with Michael for the rest of this month, until she dies. With the thought of meeting Michael, seeing, hugging, kissing and telling him how she feels for him, she laid on her bed and fell asleep.

The next morning, April was in her bedroom curled up on her bed again, gazing at the birds that were flying by her window. Suddenly, she thrilled with the bang of her door. It was her father and mother calling out her name happily but crying at the same time. April was confused but her confusion didn't last long with her mom yelling, "Congratulations my beautiful princess, they found a perfect heart for you"... Her dad interrupted her mom, "now all we have to do is to do the surgery and you'll be as healthy as ever".

April didn't know what to feel then. Feel good that she found the heart and will be able to live healthier again or feel bad that she will live but without Michael. With those thought on her mind, she left the house to pay a visit to her doctor. She also was eager to know what kind of good hearted person would be this kind to give her their own heart.

The next day, she had her surgery and gained her conscious by the end of the week. When she woke up, she felt like she was a different person. The world seemed so different to her now. She remembered Michael again and her heart started beating like a drum. Even though she had the surgery, her heart was beating faster than ever. She got a new heart alright but her love for Michael grew more and more.

When she arrived home, she went up to the garden to see the flowers. Specially the red roses because Michael used to tell her she looked like the beautiful red roses in her garden when she blushed. Seeing red roses and thinking of Michael made her heart race. She did not know why her heart was beating so fast even though she has recovered. Suddenly the bell rang. She opened the door and there was absolutely no one outside. She looked around, and then saw an envelope on the floor. It was for her. She opened the envelope and her heart started to beat faster again.

It was his, Michael's smell. Her heart started to beat faster and faster. Her hands trembled as she took off the letter. She hardly managed to sit on a sofa and started reading.

"April, the most beautiful red rose of the garden of my love, last month around today I met you. We accidently bumped into each other on the subway. Your books and bag dropped from your hand. I told you I was sorry and thought that you would get mad at me but instead you looked at me with your beautiful green eyes, and smiled. At that moment I knew I fell in love with you at first sight. Later, when you told me that these kinds of funny small accidents happens to you once in a while with your cute giggle at the end made me realize that not only your looks I have fallen in love with but also your personality. When I learned I was going to same school as you, I felt like I was the happiest person in the world and when you smiled at me when you saw me in the school made me fall even more in love with you than I already have. I loved you so much. When you said 'Yes', when I asked you out, I felt like I was going to die from happiness. However, my happiness didn't last longer. I heard you having a heart disease and that you'll die if you can't find a replacement. I didn't want to believe the idea of not having you in my life. I knew I had to do something. The expression you had when I broke up with you tore me apart inside but I had to do it for your sake. On the day of your surgery, I secretly came by your house and watched you smell our red roses. Ohh, how I wished I could come up to you and hug you so tight one last time but forgive me I just couldn't dare to see you cry! Hey but now you have a heart inside of you that loves you more than your own self. Take good care of them okay? Our hearts and roses... I'll be in heaven waiting for you. I love you so much. Good Bye!"

As April finished reading Michaels letter, something red in the envelope caught April's attention. As she put her hand in the envelope, tears went down from her beautiful green eyes onto the letter. There was a beautiful dried red rose that smelled just like Michael. April wiped her tears, hold the rose with one hand and putting the other hand on her heart, she whispered, "thank you so much Michael. You are the best thing that has ever happened to me. I love you."
