Student Teacher Relationships

The amount of knowledge consumed in our educational system relies on the impact of student- teacher relationships. Constructing a social network provides benefits such as student resources. This web of social grouping is built by primary and secondary relationships; in a high school environment this means friends, teachers, and administration. Students who have a primary relationship with their teachers are more likely to excel academically.

A primary relationship is characterized by intimate, personal, caring, and fulfilling bonds. These relationships are typically developed by favoring conditions such as; small size, face-to-face contact, continuous contact, and proper social environment (Greene R. W. 2001).

Methods

The population examined in this research was a total of 55 students. The sample chosen from this population consisted of 12th grade students, attending Wilson, ranging between the ages of 17 and 18 . The procedure for administering surveys was to first ask permission to request the administering of the surveys then to proceed and explain its confidentiality. After introducing the survey the data was collected from those students who volunteered to take the survey. The survey questions consisted of basic background information such as age, ethnicity, and sex. There was also a scale ranging from 1 to 5; 1 being stronly disagree 5 being strongly agree. Also two yes or no questions dealing with the connection between students and their teachers. There were a total of ten questions.

Results

The participants of this research consisted of 36 females; 13.89% hispanic (5), 75% caucasian (27), and 11.11% asian (4). Plus a total of 19 male students, 36.84% caucasian (7), 47.37% hispanic (9), 5.26% black (1), 10.53% asian (2). Key results from the survey showed that students who polled a higher GPA also agreed to having a close connection with their teachers. Therefore, our hypothesis that a primary relationshp between students and teachers does take an effect the educational excellence of students. However, there are flaws in our research

Discussion

According to the collected data, there is a correlation between the relationship of students and teachers. The reason for this could be that the amount of comfort allows for both the student and the teacher to connect on a higher level and a stronger bond. Primary relationships usually are built from comfort, so when students are comfortable with their teachers it allows them to perhaps really reach out and learn something new.

The results also showed that few students (2 or 3) said that they didnt relate to having a close connection with their teachers but still continued to have outstanding GPA's. Therefore, a primary relationship may not be needed in excelling education.

If researchers were to replicate this study in the future, they should get an equal amount of females and males to distribute the surveys to. Also they should intend to survey an equal amount of ethnicities and different grade levels.

This research may be used to improve education, it can possibly show how student-teacher relationships play an important role in the process and developement of learning.
