Black Diamond, Washington
Flags are more patriotic then the little league games
played in the startling heart –

boys caught in silhouette
and a girl with a camera is staring the expanse down
as though she could take it between her teeth, or tame
it with a lens,

she is seeing who is the quicker draw:

the sun in its hungry crawl
or the snap of her finger on the shutter -

the price is right for dreaming, and
the bookstore sells
bumper stickers for John Kerry's
2004 Presidential campaign and
near the windows she curls up
reading about Arthurian legends,

her mother bought her the Hamlet
figurine in the gift store of the restaurant
they laughed in.

Antiquing can be maddening
when the price isn't right.
