I shut the door quietly as Lily stood in silence behind me. "What was that?" She asked in a feeble voice. I tried to figure out how to tell her. What to tell her.
"I'm your Guardian." I said, it was a pathetic reply.
Lily's eyes widened. "Guardian…" She said, her mind calculating, putting all of the pieces of the fragmented puzzle together. "As in Guardian Angel?" I nodded, my lips thinned. Words failed me.
Suddenly, she rushed over to me and began to yank my shirt. I understood what she wanted me to do. Obediently I took off my t shirt and let her prying fingers examine my back.
"Where are they?" She demanded. Reluctantly I unfurled my wings, the light from them filling the room.
Lily took a step away.
"My God…" She eventually whispered. I still as still as a statue, not wanting to push her any further. Lily walked over to her bedroom wall and rested her head against it. I began to reach out to her but stopped myself, she had to deal with this herself. "I've just become a walking cliché." She said to herself.
"What do you mean?" I asked, finally lifting my head and turning to face her.
She turned to face me and leant against the wall. It seemed to be keeping her upright. "I'm in love with my Guardian Angel." She whispered. " How frickin' cliché is that?" Lily suddenly shut up and looked at me blankly.
Now I was the shocked one.
"You love me?" I asked.
Lily looked away and nodded slightly.
I didn't know what to do. I felt something for her, but I didn't know it was love, was it love? I thought it was compassion. I can't understand these human emotions!
I looked up at Lily's downturned face. She looked radiant in the evening sunlight that was drenching her. She could almost pass for an Angel herself.
My feet began to carry me towards her. I was suddenly cupping her cheek with my hand, and then I was bending down to kiss her. Hesitation fled as she returned my kiss threefold…
Lily broke away. Her hands reaching out to touch my wings. "What's your real name?" She asked. I ought to have let her calm down, absorb everything, yet still she hungers for more, instead l decided to quench her curiosity and then leave her be. Her eyes glided from my wings to my face. I began to fold them away, "Don't" She said, shocking me with her loud voice. I stopped and stared at her.
"Valoel." I replied, my lips formed the word before I knew what I was doing. I had not heard my real name said out loud for centuries.
"Valoel." She repeated. It sounded even better coming from her lips. Emotions were beginning to break free from their binds. Lily reached up and kissed me on the cheek. "I love you, my Angel Valoel." She whispered in my ear. I closed my eyes and relished the moment, drawing her close to my chest. I could feel her heartbeat elevating.
"Although, I am not sure, I think I'm am falling for you too, Human Lily." I replied.
She smiled slyly at my name for her.
The name stuck.
