Author's Note: I'm not sure how accurate this is. I wanted to capture Kaiulani's thoughts on the day that Hawaii was annexed into the United States.

Weeping For Hawaii

~A Story of the Hawaiian Annexation~

I have no more. My sweet, beautiful country is gone. Oh, how I believed that this day would never come.

I am a princess without a country.

I must put on a brave face for my people. The people, I should say. I am the people's princess.

Even, if there is no more Hawaii.

Behind me, the peacocks are singing a mournful song. They are crying. They are crying for Hawaii.

I take a deep breath and step out to the flagpole. Everyone else is there. My family is wearing sombre expressions. In few moments, Hawaii will be no more.

Under Cleveland, we stood a chance.

Under McKinley, we die.

Just like that, the Senate passed a treaty.

Just like that, we were annexed.

Just like that, Sanford Dole became leader.

I look up at the flagpole. On, how I don't want to. The Hawaiian flag is flying for one last time.

It begins to lower...

And lower...

And lower...

Now, it is on the ground.

A new flag is flying in its place. It is the flag of the United States of America.

All across Hawaii, my people are weeping. They are weeping for Hawaii and her lost.

Today August 12, 1898, Hawaii fell.
