Chapter Fourteen:-

Kicking and screaming, Vae tried to get Scott off of her. He had her pinned and her body was unable to move; unable to defend herself. She felt the tears as they ran down her cheeks. Scott slapped her in the face.

"You're so weak. You are scum and will never find someone who will treat you better than me. No one wants you. You're stuck with me baby," Scott whispered in her ear before biting it and then kissing her neck. She fought the urge to scream again as she felt his knee spread her thighs.

Scott's hand pulled her shirt up and left it bunched at her neck. She tried to buck him off as he went to pull her pants off. He slapped her again and this time Vae saw black. She felt the tears come harder and she closed her eyes tight.

This isn't happening, she kept telling herself, not again. She felt her pants slide down her legs and then they were tossed to the side. Scott lowered himself until he was laying between her thighs. "Please don't do this to me." Vae knew with him this drunk and angry, she would be sore for days after he used her.

Scott grinned down at her and shook his head. "You're mine to use as I please, now shut the fuck up and stop struggling."

When Vae felt the air caress her bare flesh, she panicked. She knew the harder she fought the worse it would be for her, but she couldn't help it. She screamed and kicked and bucked, trying to get him off of her. She clawed at his eyes and punched him in the face. He growled and then her hands were above her head and he was leaning down over her.

"You're mine!" his eyes turned red and his teeth grew longer. He was changing into a monster. Vae screamed for all she was worth.

Vince woke to someone beating him in the chest. He opened his eyes and immediately went on the defensive. Vae was to be protected. He knew something was wrong when he realized it was Vae that was hitting him. She had tears rolling out from tightly closed eyes and her body was shaking. His wolf growled at him to do something, but he was at a loss.

Vae whimpered and then screamed and started thrashing. Vince's eyes changed to his wolf and he growled. He pulled her off of him and set her on the bed. He gently pinned her arms down so she couldn't hit him and started whispering her name.

"Vae…Vae baby, wake up." He kissed her cheek and felt her body start trembling. The tears came harder and her body shook with sobs. His heart clenched in his chest and he knew she was dreaming about her ex. Vince's claws came out and he ached to kill the bastard that did this to her. He pulled Vae into his arms and rubbed her back. He knew the moment she woke up because she grew ramrod straight in his arms and then she broke down sobbing and clutching at him.

"He's going… to find… me," Vae stuttered. Vince pulled her back and wiped her tears off her cheeks.

"I promise you this, if I ever see this man, he is dead. I will cut off his head and feed it to the birds. No one touches what is mine," Vince growled. He saw Vae flinch and softened his expression. "I mean it. You are mine and no one will hurt you."

"I can't go back to sleep. It's in my dreams that he finds me now." Vae closed her eyes as she remembered the way his hands had held her down. She shivered and moved closer to Vince's warmth. He was her rock now. She had to remember that he was different than Scott and that not all men were like her ex.

"It's only 4:30, you need to go back to sleep. I'll be right here. Nothing will happen to you so long as I live." Vince kissed her and she smiled tentatively at him. He laid down and opened his arms for her to crawl into. Vae took a deep breath and then snuggled close to him with her head on his chest. He was warm and soon it was hard for her to keep her eyes open.

Vae sighed when Vince started running his fingers through her long hair. She loved when people played with her hair. It put her to sleep. She closed her eyes and slowly drifted to sleep with the sound of a steady heart under her ear.

The next time Vae woke up, the sun lit up the entire room. She stretched and turned to ask Vince a question. She felt disappointed to find he wasn't in the bed anymore. She threw the sheet back and swung her feet off the side of the large bed. Yawning, she walked over to the bathroom. After using the bathroom and running her fingers through her hair, she walked down the stairs to the kitchen. No one was around and she wondered where Vince had gone.

"Vince?" she called. When no one answered she went to the small refrigerator and sighed when she saw it was empty. She folded her arms under her breasts and walked to the front door. She opened it and stepped out onto the front porch. She shielded her eyes and looked around for any signs of movement.

Looking down at herself, Vae longed to have her own stuff to wear. She looked down at her bare feet and groaned. No way was she walking around barefoot after all the hiking she did yesterday. She looked around and found a pair of old boots. After checking them for spiders, she slipped them on and started the trek toward her camper. When she arrived she smiled to find the door unlocked and all their items untouched. She shut the door behind her and got to work.

Packing all her stuff into different bags, Vae soon had the camper looking neater. When she saw Lorie's favorite shirt, it caused tears to come to her eyes. "Oh Lorie, where are you?" she asked the quiet camper. She sat on the bed and looked out the window. She missed her friend so much.

After a few moments Vae decided it was time to leave. She piled her bags in front of the door and then opened it. The sound of angry voices made her lean out to see what was going on.

"She's gone! They must have taken her. We have to go after her," Vince was shouting. He was pacing and she could see his wolf was mainly in control. Vae wondered who they were talking about.

"Vince, I'm sure she's around her somewhere. You need to calm down before you do something stupid. I'll send some of the men out to look and I'll help. We'll bring her back. She may have just wondered too far off and hasn't made it back yet. I know she's your mate, but let's be reasonable." Matthias grabbed Vince's shoulder and looked into his eyes. "Trust me, nothing will happen to her."

"My wolf is trying to take over. He wants to find her. She's… how do I put this… damaged. She's been hurt by an ex and I woke up last night to her screaming and thrashing in the bed. It took everything in me not to go track this guy down and kill him. I'm just scared she's going to think I'm like him. I want to help her. I want to heal her. And I want her to trust me." Vince shook his head.

Vae could only stare straight ahead. He was talking about her. Though she knew Vince had said more after he called her damaged, her mind stopped listening and focused on that word. He thought she was damaged… after everything? After she had opened up and told him everything he now viewed her as damaged?

Vae choked on a sob and stepped down from the camper. She grabbed onto the camper as she felt like her heart was being torn in two. How had she been so stupid as to trust him? He was no better than Scott.

Vae felt herself start shaking as sobs wracked her body. She grabbed her stomach and started walking toward the woods. She had to find Lorie and get the hell out of there. She stumbled as she started running because of the too large boots. She kicked them off and heard someone call her name. She knew it was Vince, but she didn't turn. Wiping the tears away, she took off running for all she was worth. She had to get away.

She made it about three hundred feet before she felt arms grab her from behind. She kicked and thrashed, trying to get free. She knew it wasn't Scott, but her mind still froze in fear as she was pinned.

"I'm not going to hurt you," a voice whispered in her ear. She gasped as she realized it wasn't Vince. This man was a stranger. She didn't recognize his voice and he gave her an eerie feeling.

"Who are you?" she asked. The man pulled her hair to the side and sniffed her neck.

"You are unmated, good." He climbed to his feet, pulling her with him. "Ranger will be pleased. I'm going to take you to Lorie. How does that sound?"

As soon as he said Lorie's name, Vae's mind went into overload. Could he be telling the truth? Could he reunite her with her friend? "Where is Lorie?" she asked warily.

"She's in my pack. I'm her mate. My name is Avery." Avery stuck out his hand and Vae stared at it. She didn't know this man, didn't know if he was telling the truth. For all she knew, he could be a murderer.

"Tell me something about Lorie. Describe her to me." Vae wanted facts. She wasn't going anywhere with this man until she knew everything.

"She's got an attitude, she's tall, blonde hair and thinks she's tough. She is an army brat, her dad is a general or something like that." Avery stopped and looked around. "Is that enough? We need to move fast if you want to reach Lorie by today."

Vae struggled with her doubts and finally nodded her head. Avery picked her up and took off running. Vae heard a howl in the distance and goose bumps broke out on her arm. Avery cursed and picked up speed.

Vince had seen Vae come out of the camper and could smell her hurt. She must have heard some of what he said. He cursed and started toward her. She took off toward the woods and disappeared inside. He was about to run after her when Matthias called him back.

"Give her a second alone. I need to know how much progress you've made. Have you marked her yet? Your scent is on her, but it is faint. I need you to mark her so the other pack won't have any interest in taking her. If she is mated they won't want her. The mark will start the process in changing her. After that I need you to take her blood every day." Matthias turned his head as Romeo came out the front door.

"You have to give me a chance to let her get used to me. She's not ready for that yet." Vince knew Vae would hate him if he marked her right now. She was just now starting to trust him and he was afraid she might be upset with him. He needed to find out and his wolf wanted him to find her now. "I'll talk to her, but I need more time."

Vince took off into the woods, hoping Vae hadn't gotten far. When he was about ten yards in, he smelled something that made his blood run cold. There was another werewolf out here and he wasn't part of their pack. Shifting before he could really think about it, Vince took off after the man's scent. When Vae's mixed with his, Vince saw red. They were going to take her. Over my dead body. Vince's wolf growled in his mind. Vince threw his head back and howled, alerting the pack to an intruder.

Vae could hear the sound of rushing water as they approached the river. "Are we crossing that?" she asked worriedly.

"Hold on to me," Avery said quickly. He had taken two steps in the water when something tackled him. His hold tightened and Vae gasped. Before she could take another breath her head was under the water and Avery's arms disappeared from around her. She kicked and swung her arms and finally her head bobbed to the surface. She grabbed a rock and held on long enough to get to her feet. The water was at her waist and freezing cold. She was still in Vince's shirt and had no bra on. Her nipples were hard and noticeable as the shirt clung to her. She shivered and stepped toward the shore.

Hearing growls, she turned to find Vince locked in a fight with a smaller wolf. She could tell the smaller wolf was losing, but he was still holding his own. She gasped as the smaller wolf locked onto Vince's back paw. Vince growled and swung around to sink his teeth into Avery's back. Avery released Vince with a yelp and struggled to free himself. He dove into the water, forcing Vince to let go. As Avery kicked, he ended up clawing Vince in the face. Vince shook his head and swam back to shore. Avery kept swimming and ended up on the other side. He shifted back and stared at Vae.

"Soon." Avery smiled at her and then took off into the woods.

Vae felt a cold chill sweep over her body and she shivered. When she turned back to Vince he was still in his wolf form and he was limping toward her. He whined and she resisted the urge to pet him. She was still pissed that he had called her damaged. Part of her wanted to get back in the water and follow Avery.

"Lead the way," she snapped, crossing her arms and turning away from Vince. She could feel his eyes boring into her, but she ignored them and finally he went into action. As Vae followed Vince back to the cabin, she couldn't help but take in his injuries. He had blood dripping down his right back leg and leaving a trail on the leaves. She felt her heart break as she battled in herself. She wanted to help him, but he thought she was damaged. He didn't want her, never would.

When they made it back to the clearing, Matthias was waiting on the front porch. He took in the scene and immediately called for a lady named Maria and Vae remembered her to be mated to Samuel.

The first reaction Vae had when she saw Maria was envy. The lady walked around like she owned the place. She held her head high and her hips swayed with each movement. She had long red hair that had a slight wild curl to it. It went to about her hips and swung side to side when she walked. When she saw Vince, her green eyes widened and she immediately began giving orders.

"Vince, I need you to shift back and then go lay on the couch. Samuel," she called, her mate appearing behind her. "I need you to get Vince a towel to cover up. Then I'm going to need a needle, thread and some alcohol to clean the wounds."

Samuel nodded at his mate before going to do as she asked. Vince stumbled up the steps and then collapsed on the porch. Vae hadn't realized how wounded he really was until he shifted back. His side was covered in deep claw marks and his calf was bleeding profusely. She could just make out the teeth marks in a perfect half moon.

Matthias bent down and helped Vince to his feet. He hopped on one leg into the house and Vae followed. Hugging her arms to her sides, Vae tried to make herself invisible as she watched Maria work on Vince.

Maria asked Samuel for cool cloths to get Vince's temperature down as she poured alcohol onto his wounds. Vince sucked in a breath and gripped the couch cushions until his knuckles turned white.

When Vince said her name, Matthias turned to look at her. She dropped her eyes and looked at the floor. She heard someone approach her and then a hand landed on her shoulder. "Come with me." Matthias turned her and led her into his office.

Closing the door, he motioned for her to take a seat. Vae looked around once before doing as he asked. "What do you want?" she asked almost harshly. She didn't mean to take her anger out on Matthias, but part of her was still mad at him for making her choose a mate.

"I wanted to talk to you about some things." Matthias sat down at his desk and propped his feet up. He looked older in that moment. His face looked tired and Vae took notice of the dark circles under his eyes.

"What things?" she asked more gently.

"The things to do with mates." He watched her expressions, but she kept her face blank. "Last night I talked to Vince and asked him if he had marked you yet. He told me no. Vae, you may not get this, but it is important to a pack for the male to mark his female. If Vince doesn't mark you soon, there may be some fights that break out. All the men are on edge because their wolves sense that an unmated female is near. I can't have my men fighting amongst each other. I need you to let Vince mark you."

"What does that mean? Is he going to bite me or something?" Vae asked, her emotions passing over her face. She was scared. She didn't want Vince to bite her. Why did she have to mate with them in the first place?

"It is a bite, yes, but… it is different than a normal bite. Most women have said that it is pleasurable… if you get my meaning," Matthias said , the hidden meaning clear. Vae blushed and nodded.

"Vince doesn't want me," She argued. She couldn't hide the hurt that filled her voice.

"What makes you think that?" Matthias asked.

"He thinks I'm damaged." Vae pushed the tears back. She was tired of crying.

"Vae, Vince very much wants you. You have no idea how much control he is showing over his wolf. Most males don't wait days after choosing their mate to mark them. He is going to become aggressive with other males around until you bare his mark. I normally make the males mark their mates the night they choose them, but Vince has asked me for more time. He told me some of your past and I granted him more time. He was arguing about it with me on the porch when you over heard us."

"Maybe I'm not the right one for him," Vae mumbled, pushing down the hope that had started budding in her heart.

"Vae, how many times have you seen Vince put himself at risk for you? There's at least twice that I know of personally. He saved you today from Avery, and has suffered from it greatly. He is in pain and needs his mate by his side. The other time was when he saved you from being taken at the gas station. He has even argued with his alpha to protect you. Does that not prove that he wants you?" Matthias knew he had gotten somewhere when Vae started wiggling in her chair.

"This is all my fault," Vae said sadly. She wiped the tear that had found its way down her cheek and got to her feet. "I'm going to see Vince now."

Matthias nodded at her and she started toward the door. "Vae, talk to Vince about the mating and the marking. Let him explain things to you. Let him tell you how hard it really is for him. You must consider this before I have to make it an order. I want you to have a choice, but I won't hold out for long."

Vae didn't turn, but opened the door and stepped out. She shut it behind her and let out the breath she had been holding. Throwing her head back, she walked toward the living room. When she got there Vince was alone on the couch and his eyes were closed. She got to her knees and laid her head on his chest. She closed her eyes and listened to his heart.

When a hand landed on her head, she jumped, but relaxed again when she realized it was Vince. "I'm so sorry. This is my fault. You're hurt because of me."

"Shh, it's all right. I'm fine. I'll be back to my normal self by tomorrow night." Vince lifted his head and kissed her cheek. She smiled at him.

"You need to rest." She pushed him back and he reluctantly laid back down. Before she could move, Vince grabbed her and pulled her onto his chest. He rolled and she fell into the space between his body and the couch cushions. His arms wrapped around her and his mouth settled in the hollow at her throat. He kissed her neck and then scraped it with his teeth. Vae tensed.

"I'm sorry," Vince apologized, his mouth leaving her skin. She cursed herself for feeling disappointed. Thinking back on everything that Matthias had said, she closed her eyes and then said something she thought she never would.

"Vince, I want you to mark me."
