i was coalescing, my edges blurring
into surfaces, and just her presence
made my outlines shimmer and fade.

i whispered, underwater,
"if only the sun would never set,"
knowing that it must if we wish
to bask in its warmth,

and i swallowed the deep blue
and dove twelve feet under
feeling only lightness,
no pressure.

"here are your treasures," i said.
"keep them close to you. don't
let them drift away as i have."

she hesitated, moved her hand from mine.
i spoke to the bubbles, "i will hold you when
we are alone between the earth and the sea."

but the twilight came crashing,
and the words i'd repeated in the mirror
were trapped deep within me.
