Expanding on Dickinson

I started early, took my dog

And went to see the sea

The mermaids in the basement

Came out to stare at me

:::

"Where are you going?" they asked so coolly

But with slivers in their voice

I was not going to tell them

But they left me with no choice

:::

"I am going to the sea," I said,

My chin lifted high

They let out one collective hiss,

Retreated from the light

:::

"We will be free one day," they said.

"When that day comes, you will be dead."
