Chapter 2
"They Do It All The Time On TV"
Juliette hiked her book-bag up on her way out of summer school, frowning as the strap dug into her shoulder due to the weight of her textbooks. She made her way across the field, the heat beating down on her back.
"Juliette!" Someone called out, catching a head-turn from the brunette.
As Juliette's eyes landed on the figure frantically waving his hand on the sidewalk, her face considerably brightened. Hiking her bag up once again, she grabbed onto the bottom as she raced for the boy.
"Hey" Skye greeted, a bright smile on his face and two ice-cream cones in his hands.
Juliette grinned, returning a hi as she grabbed what she assumed to be her pistachio, ice-cream cone from his hand.
"Thanks man, the sun's killing me." She replied, to which Skye grinned, "well, since you're too much of a good kid to go to the mall without your parents' permission, I figured I'd bring it to you."
Juliette lightly punched his shoulder, rolling her eyes as the two commenced walking down the sidewalk.
"So what're you doing here?" Juliette asked.
"Just thought I'd see the girl-genius of class 2011." Juliette smiled behind her ice-cream cone.
"Actually, I wanted to see if we could hang out. Summer's been pretty boring so far."
Juliette's smile faltered, "I can't man. You know my parents." She said, giving him an apologetic gaze.
"I know. It was easier with school and everything." Juliette nodded in agreement.
"Hey, maybe I could come by tomorrow too, and we'll play soccer or something." Skye suggested, grinning.
"Hey, yeah" Juliette said enthusiastically. By then, the two of them had arrived at her doorstep, Juliette turned to face Skye once again.
"We're set then. You, me, and soccer tomorrow after school." She grinned, bidding goodbye as she disappeared behind the white door.
. . .
The next day, Juliette wasn't surprised to see Skye waiting for her in the field by the goalpost as she stepped out of summer school.
"Hey." She greeted, carelessly flinging her book-bag by the post.
Skye had chosen to bring the soccer ball after all. For about half an hour the two played a few intense rounds of soccer.
Exhausted and hot, the two ended their game as they sat side by side, trying to catch their breaths.
Skye chugged the last of his water bottle, flinging it behind him. Juliette cocked an eyebrow at the action, but was too tired to say anything.
"So" Skye began, turning to her. His blonde hair matted in sweat, and his blue eyes twinkling.
"How's the whole Old Scona thing?"
Juliette let out a sigh, looking up into the sky, "It's good."
Skye cocked an eyebrow, "good? Aren't your parents stressing this enough for you? You need me to add to it now?" He smirked.
Juliette cast him a playful glare, turning back to the sky.
"It's just, it's an IQ test right, so I'm not too worried."
"Hold up" Juliette snapped her head in Skye's direction, ah crap, did he notice?
He cast her a sideways glance "what're you up to?"
Juliette gave him a playful smirk, plopping her hand on his bare shoulder.
"It's nothing man." Secretly, she hoped that he'd catch on, because she really wanted to speak the words plaguing her mind.
"You can't lie to me Juliette, just tell me."
Juliette suppressed a smile, instantly giving in.
"You remember that guy I liked right." She said it as more of a statement, shying away her gaze.
"Hmm, my best friend from grade three? Yeah, I think so." Skye said jokingly, Juliette gently nudged his shoulder.
"So I think he's going to Laguna Composite, and I told you about wanting to go right?"
"Yup, you told me your parents totally shot it down too." Skye replied.
"Exactly. It's so damn unfair-"
"You told me about that too. Could we move onto the part where Roman comes into this?" Juliette smiled a small smile.
"Anyways, I was thinking about it last night, and I remember this show I'd been watching on TV. I didn't even consider it at the time, but when I was thinking about it last night, it just came to me." Skye stared at Juliette when she paused, a little confused.
"What if I went to Laguna dressed up as a guy?"
A very, very funny expression appeared on Skye's face, but it only made Juliette more nervous.
"I mean, I don't want him to recognize me and after high school I won't be here anymore so I just wanted to be with him one last time; and I could try and go to both Laguna and Old Scona at once-"
"Juliette. Calm down."
"Sorry." She squeaked.
Skye rolled his eyes, snaking his arm around her and pulling her to him.
"You always get so worked up over him, dude." He chuckled.
"Okay then, about your idea. Two schools at once, both being pretty high in ranking, no. Just no." Juliette peeled away from him, looking into his face.
"Just take the entrance exam for Old Scona to make your parents happy, but flunk it. Then just go to Laguna for a backup."
"I can't. I don't fail. Besides, Archbishop is my only other option if you somehow do manage to convince me."
Skye remained silent, in thought.
"Then how about you pass, but you just don't go?" Skye suggested, "tell them you got some sort of contagious disease and that you need to be home schooled for a while because of it."
"Skye are you crazy? That'll never work." Juliette frowned, nonetheless, she took the thought into consideration.
"Or maybe…"
"Then just go to Laguna, and do the Old Scona stuff at home."
"Actually…It might just be crazy enough to work."
Skye scoffed, "you're the one that wants to dress up as a guy, but you call my idea crazy?"
Juliette ignored him, "oh my god, Skye" she turned to him "this might actually work!"
She abruptly hugged him, breaking away to stand and find her bag.
"Thank you so much" she said as she returned.
Skye gave her a lopsided grin, "call me anytime you need help."
"I will!" Juliette yelled behind her, she turned, "and pick up that water bottle!" She added, bolting home.
