A/N: Okay, this is my sequel to my first story "I'm In Love With My Stepbrother… Oh Lord". It's much longer than the first one, and I can't believe I wrote 172 pages in a matter of four and a half months! So, enjoy… Also, excuse me if I have certain terms wrong as this is set in America, if you don't understand some words I've probably used Australian terms instead :P
Special mentions to Danni and Cailin, without whom, I would have terrible ideas for this story. They helped me through the times I couldn't think of a single thing :D
He's dead. Those two words kept replaying repeatedly in my head. I was driving down the state highway, the rain pouring down and blurring my vision of the world outside my car. The tires were skidding a little, showing how dangerous driving at this speed in rain was. But I wanted to see him, make sure he was alright. Inside the car, my eyes were like water gushing from a tap. It all started when my phone rang a few minutes after I had set off from my home to visit a friend.
"Hello?" I answered my phone.
"He's dead," said the exasperated voice on the other end.
"What? Who is this?" I said keeping my focus on the road ahead of me, thinking this was some sort of joke.
"Never mind who I am. It's about Justin," the voice now sounded panicked.
"Justin? Dead? How?" My voice was shaking and I was now becoming emotional, tears fighting to escape my eyes.
"Gang came and harassed them, he tried to defend us all but they got the better of him by shooting at him a number of times. I'm so sorry."
"Where are you?" I gasped.
"Down at the wharf in town." The phone clicked and I didn't want to believe what I had just been informed of. I did a U-turn and drove along the road in shock for a while, until I finally realized that my younger stepbrother was now dead.
"NO!" I shouted, trying to tell myself it wasn't true. Tears dampened my face as I drove, the black four-wheel drive slightly swerving side to side on the road because I was losing concentration. My phone rang for a second time. I glanced at the screen. It was Demetri, my other stepbrother who I was currently dating. I pushed answer and heard his voice ring through the car.
"Demi, I want out. I'm breaking up with you." I snuffled. Now was not the time to ask why he wanted to dump me.
"Demetri, Justin's dead," I cried and he didn't understand me at first. He thought I was joking around.
"Someone just rang me and told me he's been shot down at the wharf. I'm going down there to see if he is-" I didn't finish what I was saying because there would be no way he would be alive. My foot lowered on the accelerator, making the car go faster and faster.
"Okay well I'll talk to you later about us, bye," he said and hung up. I arrived at the wharf twenty minutes later and the rain had not eased. I got out, pulled my hood up and saw a body lying on the wharf. I ran down to it and it realized it was Justin. I knelt down beside him, already drenched right through with rain and said his name. His light brown hair clung to his forehead with water, there was no response so I checked for a pulse, and to my greatest surprise there was a feint one.
"Justin?" I said once again. He turned his head and looked at me weakly. He wasn't dead, like his friend had said he was.
"I'm sorry," he barely whispered and I bent down and hugged him. It feels rather odd to hug someone when you are both drenched, but it didn't matter because I loved him so much. I called an ambulance and they showed up ten minutes later. They rushed off to the nearest hospital and I got back in my car. Not thinking, I didn't look in the rear view mirror and hit something as I reversed.
"Shit!" I groaned and got out. It was someone I would never have expected to hit. It was Demetri and he was in a lot of pain.
"Demetri what the HELL!" I yelled.
"I came to see Justin," he growled as his arms grasped his leg.
"He's in the hospital!" Feeling like the stupidest moron in the entire world, I helped him up and put him in my car. I drove to the hospital and stumbled in with him over my back.
"Help, somebody help him," I cried and a few nurses rushed to my aid, taking him from me and putting him into a room. I wasn't allowed in the room Justin was in so I stayed outside Demetri's. The hospital was very quiet and there I was, sitting in the waiting room chair, crying my eyes out and feeling like the stupidest person on the planet. Finding out my younger brother had been shot and was about to die and hitting my other brother with a car, I was distraught beyond measureable. Someone walked past and looked at me, but my vision was too blurry to see who it actually was. They stood at the entrance to the room Demetri was in for a while and then sat next to me. I was about to tell them to go away when I wiped my eyes and saw it was Demetri's best friend, Mason.I was damp all over from the rain and my mascara was surely running everywhere. Not the best look when seeing one of your ex boyfriends. Screw my life.
"Is there any news on how this happened?" He asked. The first thing he says to me after two and a half years since I last saw him. Although I suppose asking me how I was is a rather stupid thing to ask in this situation. I looked into his light blue eyes, which looked brighter than normal due to the black hair that was swept over them. He was wearing a lip ring, something I hardly ever saw him without.
"Um," I said, picking at the hem of my jumper. His eyes drilled into me, searching for an answer.
"It was..." I couldn't say anymore. Until I finally felt enough anger and guilt to almost yell.
"IT WAS ME ALRIGHT; I'M THE BIGGEST FUCKING IDIOT IN THE WORLD!" I screamed, standing up and attracting several stares from people before I was told to leave the hospital by a security guard. I looked at Mason one last time to see him shocked beyond anything you could ever imagine. I went outside and bashed my fists against the bonnet of the car before slumping down against it, crying until I could no longer cry. By now the rain had disappeared.
I'm Demi Hall, live in America and am now almost twenty one years old (but still act like a seventeen year old). I've dated my stepbrother for almost two years and on the day he goes to break up with me, I land him in hospital by accident. I don't live with him anymore because by the time I started college, I had saved up enough to move into my own apartment in the town next to Arizona. I live by myself. I haven't seen Mason, one of my ex boyfriends and old friend, for a long time so to see him at the hospital was a shock. I managed to drive home without any more accidents. I sat on the couch, unable to sleep until five am, when I finally closed my eyes.
I woke again around ten am, and the first thing I did was call the hospital to see how Demetri and Justin were. They told me Demetri was alright, his leg was sprained and at the moment he was sleeping. Justin however was in a coma. They had managed to get all the bullets out and did not know if he was going to live or not. I said thank you and hung up. I took a shower and ate some food before deciding to go see my brothers. I pulled my leather jacket on and scarf over that because it was autumn right now. The rain had ceased but it was still cloudy. I arrived at the hospital and went to Justin's room to find him unconscious. I soon departed his room to see Demetri watching the TV. Typical of him to be watching the TV. When I entered the doorway, his eyes lit up.
"How long until they let you out?" I asked, nearing his bed.
"Two days." I sat on his bed and he winced, reaching for his leg.
"Sorry," I said automatically, not making eye contact with him.
"So what's the situation with Justin?"
"He's in a coma. They don't know if he will live or not."He was outraged. His head was in his arms and I could've sworn I heard him crying.
"Why," Demetri said, and it wasn't a question either.
"I don't know, I think he was hanging with the wrong people," I said and put my arm on him. He pulled me closer to him and hugged me, showing no signs of letting me go anytime soon. I was now lying half on him, and was sure I was hurting him but he seemed fine. A nurse walked past and objected to how we were lying but didn't do anything about it. We were watching TV when I decided to bring up the status of our relationship.
"So uh, why are you breaking up with me again?" I said, turning my head to look at him. He continued to watch the TV, oblivious to what I had just asked.
"Demetri!" I said, sitting upright. He stared at me with a guilty look in his eyes and I got off the bed and headed for the door.
"Demi," he said quietly and I paused. I turned and faced him.
"I just think that it's time for us to move on," he said.
"Oh," I said and left the room without as much as a hug. I headed towards the elevator but stopped after a few steps, feeling like going back to say something. But what would I say? Shaking my head, I continued towards the elevator, almost running into somebody.
"Sorry!" I instantly apologized to find it was Mason. Why do I keep running into him?
"Um no you're alright," he said and we went our separate ways. I got into the elevator and went down to the entrance, just making it to the middle of the stairs outside when I heard someone call out my name. I almost didn't hear them; it was only the sound of their shoes scuffing that caught my attention.
"Mason?" I said when I turned around, wondering why he'd want to talk to me.
