All Around Me

~A Poem From World War I~

BOOM, BOOM,

The heavy sounds of artillery are all around me.

Screaming is all around me as brave men die.

The stench of death and rot is all around me.

My boots are soaked clear though,

As I step in things, I don't wish to know,

What it is I'm walking in.

BOOM, BOOM,

The machine gun fires,

Killing many.

BOOM, BOOM,

A deadly disease is spread.

I past a dead men whose eyes are open,

Staring at the sky.

He looks peaceful,

Probably has the most peace here.

BOOM, BOOM,

The sounds echo all around me.

Shots cross No Man's Land,

For they are the only things that can safely cross.

BOOM, BOOM,

The dirt all around me is falling.

We have been hit!

It's caving in all around me.

Dear God, take care of my family.

Sweet Jesus, let me live...

All around me men are dying.

All around me...

All around me...
