White Horse (It's Too Late)
-Jade Tryton
"I don't want to hear it Cole." I shut my eyes tightly, pinching the bridge of my nose. "Jen. Please. Just listen. I asked her as a friend. You know I said I'd wait for you." Cole says, his big blue eyes dangerously disarming as they hover above my own. I snort in disgust.
"Oh please. Save it for 'Maddie', because I'm not listening." I spin on my heel, heading in no particular direction - just away from the source of my frustration. "I don't like her." Cole insists, dragging his hand through his dark auburn hair. "Then why did you ask her?" I shot down his pathetic attempt at recovery with a glare as I turned to face him again. "I didn't want you to feel awkward around all those people you didn't know." He replied sweetly.
"Bull." I countered. "Really Jen? I thought you knew me better." His eyes held a look of desperation that mirrored my own. "I don't want this – I don't want her. You know who really matters to me." Cole whispered.
"Yeah. YOU." I muttered, resisting the urge to hit him. He sat down on the wooden bench, resting his elbows on his knees and his head in his hands. I paced back and forth, deliberating whether or not to speak my mental monologue aloud. I had really nothing left to lose.
"You have no idea how badly I want to believe you. I want to be able to listen to what you say and trust you, but I can't. One minute you love me and you'll wait however long it takes, and the next you're running around with whoever. You'd have to be an absolute moron to think I'd believe anything you say from this point forward. Even my five year old sister knows its b.s. !" I exclaimed angrily, sending him yet another scathing look.
He said nothing. "That's what I fucking thought." I spat out. "After the first time, I swore I'd never again let anyone matter that much to me. But you did. You broke through my steel walls with your crooked smile and the way you sound when you say my name and- The point is, I've learned my lesson." I turned to walk away, my feet crunching the leaves. I heard footsteps behind me.
Continuing to walk, I ignored the sound. His long legs allowed him to catch up to me easily and he walked beside me, matching my stride. Cole put his arm around my shoulders, I tensed but I didn't shake it off. "Jen, please just give me a chance to show you I mean what I say. I realize I made, well the biggest mistake of my life, and I promise –"
At this 'promise' I pulled away from him abruptly, ceasing to walk and turning to face him. "You know what? I think it's time for you to get down off your white horse, take off your stupid, shiny armor, and stop trying to resuscitate chivalry, because –NEWSFLASH! - you're too late."
With that I turned and strode the other way, leaving Prince Charming in the dust.
