"From the Train"
A snake tangos with a weary drifter
across the tracks. They dance
around the traffic light and board
a city bus where a librarian lets the snake
take a nap in her purse. She enters
a book store and gives the snake a dictionary
so its tongue can learn to walk a straight line
but when it finally speaks, the snake can only twist
and turn the words we choose. It finds
if fits right in.
