Where I'm From

I am from the mountains and the rice patties drenched in Communism,

from the woman with courage who left for my own good.

I am from the islands with beaches and volcanoes; palm trees and hula dancing,

I am from the boat I would row with my mother down the stream every night,

From the rushing water and fires crackling after the sun had retired for the night.

I am from a canvas, flying free to draw my future,

from the stage where I perform.

I'm from the warm smell of Dad's macaroni and cheese, letting me have a good night's rest.

I'm from fondue night on New Years and game night; Movie night on Saturday, and birthday nights.

I am from Las Vegas and Maine; Hawaii and Montreal; from the Grand Canyon and the Statue of Liberty.

I am from all the sunrises and sunsets and the salty water surrounding me as my feet sink into the sand.

from my stuffed animal Puffy and the warmth of my parents bed.

I am from the needles in my foot from reading to mom for 2 hours straight,

(only to discover she had fallen asleep)

from sowing the seeds that would grow into a forest home to ticks and grasshoppers.

I am from the world of Sadie and Carter; the time of the pyramids, and Queen Nefertiti, and Pharaoh Tutankhamen,

from Ma'at and Ammit, Aphrodite and Poseidon; all wonders of Mythology.

I am from music itself: Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez, Pink, Kelly Clarkson, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Coldplay, and many more,

from plunking out "The Entertainer" and "Musette" on the Piano.

I am from singing my heart out in the shower

from dancing around my room (when no one is looking).

I am from pasta and cheese,

from birthday pies (not cake!).

I am from my pond birthday parties I had until I was turning 10

(I'd invite the whole class).

I am from these moments-

like rain drops that nourish the flower making it grow stronger as time passes on, moments to be forgotten when the frost comes around.
