Chapter18-So Much For My Happy Ending
"Can't sleep?" I asked Alex, lacing our fingers together. I could hardly sleep either, thinking about our earlier conversation.
Alex rolled onto his side and watched my expression. He leaned in and kissed me. "Not really."
I messed with his bangs for a while before just stroking his forehead.
He smiled at me before pulling me against his chest tightly. He moved on top of me, kissing me for what felt like forever. When he finally pulled away, I was a little dizzy. But I liked it.
"What was that for?" I asked breathlessly.
"I love you." He said, moving the hair out of my eyes.
"I love you, too."
"Have you ever thought about getting married?" He asked.
I tried not to look and sound surprised. But I was. It was so sudden, I hardly expected that from him.
He nodded. "Like if... we got married."
We had Jeremy together. We had lived together for so long. So why not? I was sure I loved him and it was clear he loved me. Maybe it would work.
But what would my mom think? She'd probably think I was crazy for even thinking of getting married now.
I couldn't go to college anymore, most likely not. My future was most likely going to be with Jeremy and Alex. Marriage would be right, right?
"You don't have to answer me right now. I just... wanted you to think about it." He said, realizing that I was most likely not ready.
"No, I-I want to. I just... I don't want to be one of those people that just... live, you know? I want to do something with myself, like I had planned before I met you. I love you and Jeremy both but I want more." I exhaled at the end, letting him know that my rant was done and over with. He needed to know, right? And I was sure I hadn't turned him down.
He pressed his lips to mine, a simple touch. "I love you, honestly and truthfully. I've always loved you. I'll do anything for you."
I wrapped my arms around his neck and pulled him against my body tightly. I kissed him as hard as I could, leaving no room for any more words... nothing. Just our lips together.
"You are the best thing that's ever happened to me." I whispered.
He brushed his thumb over my bottom lip. "So is that a yes?"
I laughed. "Of course it is."
"Mom, can I ask you something?" I asked, taking a seat at the table.
She looked back at me. "Of course, sweetheart."
"Do you like Alex?"
"It's just... It's hard to believe that he wasn't involved in... you know."
I looked down at Jeremy and a tear fell from my eye. "He really loves me. And Jeremy."
Mom walked over to me, a cup of coffee in her hands. "Do you love him?"
"He saved me, mom. Of course I love him." I said in a small voice.
She took my hand in hers and squeezed it. "I know you'll make Jeremy so happy. He loves you, both of you."
"You never answered my question, mom."
She sighed loudly. "He's just... I need to get to know him better. Like... how he really met you. Did he really keep you safe?"
"He saved me, mom. Without him, I would've died. Is that enough for you?" I asked, getting up from the table. Jeremy started crying but I practically ignored it. I walked out of the house, slamming the door behind me. Maybe life would've been better if I had died a kidnapped child.
