Life 1: What Are Dreams to You? Script by: Monty Mason

Hello! I'm back again! And this time I bring you something very different. It is a script for a flash 8 animation I had written before but haven't gotten around to animating it. Main reason is that I still need to figure out techniques to animate humans and animals in flash more easily as opposed to drawing each frame out. Well enough of animation talk lol. I hope you all enjoy this read as much as I've enjoyed writing it. May have a sequel, may not; not too sure right now. I'm not going to write a sequel if I don't come up with anything solid. Next one though I know I want to focus on romance/love. Anyways enjoy! =) (Note: This is in a script format) - Monty

Life 1: What Are Dreams to You?

The screen opens up with cigarette ashes falling. The cigarette ash falls and the camera moves up to the character smoking the cigarette. The character (Takoda) is standing beside a friend who is also smoking a cigarette (Tadashi).

Tadashi: Hey Takoda...what are your dreams?

Takoda: Dreams?

Tadashi: Yeah...what do you dream of doing with your future?

Takoda: ...I want to become...a somebody rather than a nobody...

Tadashi: Don't we all?

Takoda: What do you mean?

Tadashi: I mean look at us, a bunch of wrecks, we can't even find a decent full time job...yet we still dream rather than facing the harsh reality which we try to avoid so hard.

Takoda: We don't run...we just delay it...

Tadashi: All the same, no matter how you look at it...we're bunch of nobodies in a world of cruel and harsh reality.

Takoda: Why the sudden topic of dreams anyways? What's your point with all this chatter?

Tadashi: My point...my point is why are we still dreaming? When we know that we're just fools for dreaming.

Takoda: We?

Tadashi: Yeah we, I have my dreams to you know.

Takoda: No, I mean we are both fools?

Tadashi: Huh, what's wrong? You aren't mad that I called you a fool are you?

Takoda: No...I'm just completely pissed that you're right.

Takoda now drops his cigarette on the sidewalk and stares up at the sky with a voice over thought, "How did my life end up like this?" Now a flash back takes place (main story).

The screen focuses up on the sun and then scrolls back down indicating a flashback.

Takoda is seen photographing a flying bird.

Takoda: You're lucky...you can fly where ever you want to without a care in the world...unlike us humans who have to work their way up in this harsh world to make something of themselves.

The bird settling down on a building roof stares at Takoda in curiosity.

Takoda: Heh, I'm stupid I guess...talking to a bird and all...like you would understand anything. Like you would understand the binds of this world which keep me tied down to the ground. Would you understand?

The bird stares at Takoda for a moment and then flies off.

Takoda: I thought so...I really am stupid...I forgot to take a picture of that bird's back while it's flying...

Tadashi is then just seen walking into the frame staring up at Takoda.

Tadashi: Hi Takoda! What you doing? You are going to be late again for college. Plus this is the last day and tomorrow is the big day...graduation!

Takoda: Graduation (whispers to himself)...I'm coming...

Takoda puts on his college tie and then the screen takes a transition to his graduation. Takoda is seen shaking hands with the principal.

People are seen leaving the graduation halls, Takoda and Tadashi are seen walking outside while talking.

Tadashi: Man! Today is the day I finally prove to my old man that I'm made for so much more in life rather than just taking over the family business.

Takoda meanwhile stares up at the sky.

Tadashi: Hi man! Takoda! You listening at all rather than just staring at those birds up there alone?

Takoda: Yeah yea, I'm listening...man...life is such a drag...

Tadashi: Huh...what's this all of a sudden?

Takoda: The birds, they have the type of freedom we don't...they can fly where ever they want to without any real worries like ours in their little happy world.

Tadashi: Ah huh, hi tell you what, how about we go celebrate! With some Ramen!

Takoda: Sure, it's not like I got anyone waiting for me at home anyways...you're lucky Tadashi...

Tadashi: You know you shouldn't remember that incident all the time. About your parent's death and all, not great for your health you know.

Takoda is walking still staring up at the sky and accidently bumps into a girl. The girl falls, so does Takoda.

Takoda: Ah sorry... Are you alright?

Saying as he gets up and gives out a hand for her to take to get up with.

Girl: Ah I'm alright...

Tadashi and Takoda move on talking still.

Tadashi: Man she is so cute!

Takoda: She's alright...

Tadashi: Are you kidding, it looks like she's got a thing for you.

Takoda: Didn't notice.

Tadashi: That's because you always have your head way up in the clouds. Time to face reality dude, you know a dream world is not the world to live in 24/7.

Takoda: ...let's get that ramen now...

The screen suddenly shows a bowl of ramen and Tadashi passed out from drinking.

Takoda: Hi Tadashi...Tadashi!

Takoda looks over to Tadashi and notices he has passed out.

Takoda: Why the hell do you have to drink so much every time we celebrate something...And I always end up carrying you back.

The camera focuses on the ramen bowl and then cross fades to a night sky. The camera moves down and Takoda, carrying Tadashi are seen walking down a neighbourhood. Takoda takes Tadashi back to his home entering the gate to the front yard and talks to his mother for a bit (seen from a far view). Then the camera comes in close as he says something before leaving.

Takoda: No, it was no trouble really...Heh, he always does get drunk like this on special occasions.

Mother: Yes...I should get him to bed now...goodnight Takoda, take care.

Takoda: Yea, goodnight.

The door to Tadashi's house closes and the door to Takoda's apartment opens. Takoda walks in throwing his apartment keys on the table and picks up his camera. Focuses it on the night sky and then again notices a bird flying by and settling to the roof across him.

Takoda: What is it with all you birds finding that roof to sit on? Find some other roof...

The bird makes a sound.

Takoda: Why? Because it's mocking of how you fly in front of me, it's like you're mocking me because I'm incapable of doing that.

The bird again makes a sound.

Takoda: Yeah...rub it all in...(sighs) Hi bird...Am I a fool for dreaming? All I dream is to rid these binds which tie me to the ground and fly freely like you...

The bird flies away.

Takoda: There you go again...but then what else can you do? You're a bird after all.

A fade out and in occurs.

The next morning, Takoda is wearing a tie and puts on a coat.

He leaves through for an interview. A pan shot up to a row of chair is seen (where Takoda along with other people are sitting waiting patiently). Takoda is called in, the conversation is not heard but seen through glass, Takoda then is seen getting up and shaking hands with the interviewer. Takoda is seen walking in the streets with the close up of what he is holding in his hands (a copy of his portfolio, with photographs on the front cover). Takoda stops by a river sidewalk where he pulls out a cigarette and lights it. Takoda is smoking looking up at the birds flying (voice over: Am I that obsessed of my dreams? Why do I have trouble facing reality? Why don't I just run out my life with a boring routine like everyone else in this boring city? Why is it I dream so much? Dream so much of...flying) Just as Takoda is smoking his cigarette, a distant voice calls out: Hi Takoda!, Takoda turns to looks, it's Tadashi. The show has caught up to the present.

Tadashi: Hi man what are you doing here?

Takoda: Just coming back from an interview.

Tadashi: Small world! So am I!

Takoda: What do you think your chances are?

Tadashi: Of getting the job?

Takoda nods.

Tadashi: Slim looking at what they make us go through for just the preliminary stages of the interview. Ha ha ha, but there are always other places right?

Takoda: Yeah...

A brief moment of silence takes on as both smoke and then Tadashi starts conversing in a serious tone.

Takoda now drops his cigarette on the sidewalk and stares up at the sky with a voice over thought, "How did my life end up like this?"

Takoda: Hi Tadashi...what are your dreams?

Tadashi: I thought you already knew.

Takoda: No, I wanted to ask but decided to wait on it.

Tadashi: Well...it's to become a guitarists.

Takoda: Then why get a degree in journalism?

Tadashi: Well I'm aiming for an editor's job, but you know...the market right now for musicians isn't that good.

Takoda: So it's about money?

Tadashi: Money makes the world run...without it, you're a nobody.

Takoda: I guess you're the true fool then.

Tadashi: What?

Takoda: Those who dream maybe called fools by the society they live in...But those who decide to disregard dreaming can be trash in the society they live in.

Takoda starts to walk away as Tadashi is left staring at Takoda walking away with his cigarette still lit. Tadashi turns over to stare at the river and says, "So am I one of those people who are trash then?".

A black out occurs (the screen goes black/dark) and fades in. The fade in occurs on a table with a letter on it, the rejection marked in red with a red triangle around it. The camera moves up to Takoda reading another letter marking his rejection.

Takoda reading a letter (voice over) : We're very sorry to inform you that you have been rejected from consideration for the position you interviewed at our company. We hope you have better luck finding a job next time, sincerely yours...Jisk Mags.

Takoda tears up the letter and throws it on the ground, as he then takes a sip of his drink silently speaking, "Dammit".

Takoda lies down in his bed and soon fades away into a dream.

Dream:

Takoda is on top of a building. He think to himself of why he is here (Voice over: Why am I here? What am I doing here?) Then looks around noticing a small break in the building's top. Now Takoda realizes why he is here (Voice over: That's right...I have to fly...). Takoda starts running through the break in the building's top while saying to himself (Voice over: Fly! Fly! Fly! Fly! Flyyyyyyy!) As he is falling down in the endless sky. Takoda is feeling the air brush past his arms, brush past his hair as he is flying with a smile. He is falling with a smile, he knows he is falling but turns around seeing there is no ground, just this high up endless building along with the endless sky. Takoda goes through clouds breathing in the fresh air, but suddenly his dream is disrupted as everything tears up and a distant ringing is heard.

Dream ends.

Takoda wakes up finding his alarm clock beeping. He resets it, gets ready again wearing his same clothes, same tie and same coat yet for another interview. Takoda walks past the kitchen with a toast in his mouth and a cup of coffee in his hand. Takoda stares at the waking city noticing the birds flying out in the morning in many proportions. Then he thinks (Voice over: Is it today then? Today the day I want to fly? I know I'll die but what if I do...it's not like I'll be missed or anything and after all, it's all for my dreams. Will it be today...or tomorrow...the day I fly I never know any more...) The screen cross fades from Takoda eating his toast and drinking his coffee to a tall building named, "JaK Flig Mags". Takoda walks into the interviewing waiting area where he notices Tadashi and walks over to him to sit beside him.

Takoda: HI Tadashi! You here for the editorial opening?

Tadashi: Yo Takoda! Yup, I feel as if my chances will be pretty good here.

Takoda: We can only hope...

Tadashi: Well you're very encouraging...what about you? How do you think you will do?

Takoda: The usual...my chances will always be the usual...

Tadashi: I see...very enthusiastic now aren't we?

Takoda: Quit being sarcastic. Looks like your number is next up.

A young man comes to Tadashi and directs him into an office, the door closes and Takoda is left alone waiting alone. Then a young woman comes to guide Takoda into an office to interview him.

Takoda: Huh...

Woman: Is something wrong ?

Takoda: Would you happen to be the girl I bumped into on the graduation day?

A flash back of Takoda bumping into the girl takes place and helping her get back up.

Flash Back:

Takoda is walking still staring up at the sky and accidently bumps into a girl. The girl falls, so does Takoda.

Takoda: Ah sorry... Are you alright?

Saying as he gets up and gives out a hand for her to take to get up with.

Girl: Ah I'm alright...

Tadashi and Takoda move on talking still.

Flash back ends.

Woman: Ah yes, now I remember, you were so busy staring up at the sky you hardly noticed anything around you.

Takoda: Ah yea... small world...so I see you managed to get a job as an interviewer here.

Woman: Yes...I was offered it right out of college since I had been working as an intern here a long time before graduating.

Takoda: Lucky you...

Woman: Oh yes, I forgot to mention my name...my name is Suzuki.

Takoda: Suzuki...nice to meet you...I'm Takoda.

Suzuki: So I noticed (says with a little giggle while pointing to the application form, leaving Takoda feeling a bit blushed).

Takoda: So I guess you did alright in the end then...

Suzuki: Yes...I hope you do get a job here (says with a serious tone now).

Takoda: Huh...yeah me to, I mean finding a job is hard enough as it is now days.

Suzuki: Well we should begin the interview then. First Question...

The scene suddenly takes place to a opening door on a building roof. The door opens and we see its Takoda walking to the edge of the roof while lighting a cigarette. A person on the far left notices Takoda and says, "It really is a small world...".

Takoda turns to look at Tadashi, "Didn't notice you were up here."

Tadashi: Up here for a smoke to huh...How'd it go?

Takoda: Better than my previous ones, I met someone I had a crude experience of bumping into before.

Tadashi: That chick from the graduation day?

Takoda: Yea...Suzuki...

Tadashi: Not a bad name...you got a thing for her?

Takoda: What makes you say that?

Tadashi: The way you said Suzuki.

Takoda: Kind of I guess...(turns to stare up at the sky while smoking a cigarette) But you know what...I don't know if it will last or not...

Tadashi: What do you mean?

Takoda: I just want to keep chasing my dreams in the end rather than anything else in life.

Tadashi: Dreams...why do you have to bring that up again?

Takoda: Because...it's the only thing which completes me...I'm a dreamer...

Tadashi: Well maybe you can dream of flying through that break in the edge of the roof there then heh.

Takoda turns over and notices it's the same type of break as it was in his dream. Takoda puts his bag down on the roof and looks at Tadashi one last time and says, "My dream...comes true...dreamers are not fools but visionaries..."

Tadashi responds in saying, "Huh...what are you saying dude?"

Takoda then throws away his cigarette and starts to run for the break in the roof while thinking to himself (Voice over: Fly! Fly! Fly! Fly! Fly! Fly! I can flyyyyyyy!), Takoda takes off of the roof in to the fresh breeze sky. Takoda is feeling the air brush past his arms, brush past his hair as he is flying with a smile. He is falling with a smile, he knows he is falling but turns around seeing how far off the ground he is, he knows there is enough little time left in his life to make himself truly feel happy for making his dream come true. Takoda goes through clouds breathing in the fresh air, Tadashi in panic looks over the roof, seeing Takoda falling with the happiest smile Takoda has ever had in all their years of friendship on his face. Then Tadashi hears a loud thud as he knows Takoda is now dead. Takoda's body is seen lying on the street with people surrounding him, Tadashi notices Takoda is now dead but still has that magnificent smile on his face as he died in fulfilling his dreams.

Tadashi: Moron...now who am I going to have a smoke with?

Tadashi goes over to Takoda's bag and takes a look in it. He notices a portfolio and Takoda's camera in there. Tadashi takes out the portfolio looking at the wondrous pictures Takoda had taken and then says to himself, "What corporation in their right mind wouldn't want to hire him...the world really is cruel." Then Tadashi takes out the camera and turn it on, focusing it on the sky. Tadashi then takes a look at the stored pictures and there is only one, one of Suzuki. Tadashi looking at it says, "Are people really fools for dreaming? I just don't know anymore..." the screen blacks out.

4 years later.

Tadashi is seen driving a car with a marriage ring around his third finger on the left hand. Tadashi notices the grave at which Takoda is in and decides to visit it. Tadashi parks the car and walks over to the grave lighting a cigarette. While smoking he is talking to the gravestone.

Tadashi: You know, I've been wondering all these 4 years that have passed...was I a trash in our society? Tell me Takoda...was I really that trash? If not so am I still that trash?

He smokes his cigarette remembering that magnificent smile on Takoda's face while he was falling off the building.

Tadashi: You gave up your life for just that impossible dream...but in that one fleeting moment it really did look as if you flied (When Takoda is swinging his arms to feel the air around him). Dreams...really are a strange thing. Some don't desire to dream, some just lock them away while still dreaming and some just can't help but stop dreaming. I think I'm beginning to know what dreaming is now, I mean, I'm really beginning to understand it now. I think I'm beginning to understand how you felt about your dreams...

Tadashi throws his cigarette on the pavement while walking, he walks to the back of his car and opens the trunk up. It looks like a guitar case, Tadashi sits in the trunk of the car and closes the back of the car. Then takes the guitar out and plays.

Credits roll on.
