The clocks were mocking her
teasing her with every chime
shouting her fears out loud
shortening that elusive thing
He'd be home soon, she thought;
as the seconds still ticked by
she wouldn't think the worst
of him, or jump to conclusions
But as the phone rang
in time with the laughing clock;
she heard the dreadful words,
her heart closed up and died inside
The words no woman wants to hear.
