The clocks were mocking her
teasing her with every chime
shouting her fears out loud
shortening that elusive thing
called time.

He'd be home soon, she thought;
as the seconds still ticked by
she wouldn't think the worst
of him, or jump to conclusions
or cry.

But as the phone rang
in time with the laughing clock;
she heard the dreadful words,
her heart closed up and died inside
with shock.

The words no woman wants to hear.
Words that make you want to turn and run.
The words a mother should never know:

"Mrs Arnold, we have found your son."
