Chapter 50 "The Last Rose"
I slouched my back down, while walking thinking of the mistakes I had just made. The mistake of starting an argument with Griffin at the party, the mistake of breaking up with him, the mistake of not getting a ride home, and the mistake of thinking that I could walk ten miles in this Mesh Cutout Scuba Peplum Dress. So tight, that my legs lost circulation, three miles ago.
This night couldn't have gone worse. My phone is dead, people are probably going to think I'm a bitch for breaking up with Griffin and on top of it all; I'm in love with Ramon.
"Hey, mind getting in the car with me?" I heard someone yell from their car. I didn't even bother to look up; there was no way I was getting into a car with some stranger. "Come on, I'm pretty sure a pretty girl like you shouldn't be walking home alone in that dress."
I stopped in my tracks and my put my shoes down, I know that voice. "Ramon?" The car stopped and Ramon got out and walked over to me. "How did you find me?"
"I actually thought that you were going to go home but, I thought you might be dumb enough to try and take a short cut. Want a ride?"
I shook my head no and grabbed my shoes, "I can't be in that car with you." Then I turned away from him and kept walking, but he followed me.
"What are you talking about Cadence?"
"I'm just going to go to the diner, I need some time alone." Ramon stopped a couple feet behind me and his car door slam. At the moment the President could've offered me a ride and I wouldn't have gone with him.
"I'm not leaving you," I heard Ramon say as he ran beside me.
I turned around and saw that he parked his car on the side of someones house, "Are you insane, what if your car gets towed?"
He did that stupid grin of his and shrugged, "Then I'll get a new car."
We walked in silence for about a mile, before Ramon turned to me and broke the silence.
"You look hot in that dress."
I looked over at him and angrily sighed, "Thanks." I muttered under my breath.
"Do you want to talk about it?"
I turned to face him and shook my head no; I had no energy to explain to him what happened. And why it happened. "No."
"Alright then, are you ok?" Ramon said removing his jacket and putting it on me.
"Yeah I'm fine," I replied returning the jacket.
"Alright then, obviously we aren't telling each other things now." Ramon said holding the jacket and continuing to walk next to me.
I wasn't going to tell him, there was no reason why I had to. It wasn't like we were going to go anywhere; we would just stay friends or whatever we are at this point. But staring at those pasty blue eyes, made me forget how things were for a second.
"You want to go with me?" I quietly whispered, while gently grabbing the jacket from him.
He simply nodded and we continued to walk in silence.
"So what do you want to eat?" Ramon asked me, while looking down at his phone.
"I don't really know what about you?" I asked already knowing that he was going to say that he wasn't hungry.
He finished typing something on his phone and set the phone on the table, "Nothing." Then he just sat there staring down at his phone.
"Are you waiting for someone to call?" I asked, staring down the menu.
"NO." He bluntly, unemotionally replied.
I quickly looked up, taken abrupt by the sudden comment. He just sat there staring at his phone for about five minutes, before it finally dinged and he quickly grabbed it.
The waiter came out with some fries and a milkshake for me and a glass of water for Ramon.
"I broke up with him." I finally said, breaking the silence.
Ramon looked up at me and shook his head, "I know. I could tell when you walked out of the room and Griffin started yelling at me for taking you away from him."
I looked down at my fries and nodded, and just thought to myself. "But yo-"and before I could even finish my sentence, Ramon's phone started ringing and on the screen read Vivianna.
He grabbed the phone and one of my fries and walked outside of the diner. Why was I even here with him? Why can't I just come out with it? Come on, Cadence get a grip.
He walked back in, just as I was having a conversation with myself. "Is everything ok?"
"Yep." He unemotionally replied, while taking some more of my fries.
"Nice." I simply replied.
Ramon looked back at his phone and shook his head, "Actually no. Vivianna keeps calling me, because she thinks we like belong together or whatever. I tried telling her that I wasn't interested in her like that, and what happened between us ended like four weeks ago; but she doesn't understand."
I dipped my fry into my shake and calmly said, "I thought she had a boyfriend."
Ramon sighed and replied, "I only said that so you would know that I wasn't interested in her and that you and I could go out; but obviously that didn't work. Griffin got you instead." Ramon half-heartedly chuckled.
"But he didn't." I croaked. "You did."
Ramon's blue eyes looked a bit foggy and he tried to clear his throat, while staring straight at me; but it backfired. "What do you mean?"
I sat up and pushed the fries away from my face, "I broke up with Griffin. But it wasn't just a breakup; it was because he thought I was in love with you. And….and…I, well I tonight…"
"You tonight what?" Ramon said, his eyes not leaving mine.
"I told him that I was." I barely made out. "That I was, no not was, but am in love with you." I silently added, feeling my cheeks burning and my eyes stinging from the tears at the bottom of my eyes.
Ramon opened his mouth to say something, but just then his phone rang and the phone read Liz. We broke eye contact and he picked up the phone and talked for a while then handed it to me. "She wants to talk to you." He quietly said.
I took the phone from him and Liz told me that she was outside of the diner, ready to take me home. I told I'd be there and hung up. "I have to go." I told Ramon, and then I grabbed my shoes and started to walk away. And again this time he didn't stop me.
I don't remember ever crying that much before, but as soon as Liz dropped me home and we settled in, the tears just started pouring.
"Do you want me to kill him for you?"
"You can't kill your brother for me; we'll both get in trouble." I mumbled against her lap.
Liz lifted my head off of her and smiled, "It's ok I'll just say that it was sibling issues."
I sobbingly giggled, and nodded no. "It's fine, it just means that we didn't waste our time by trying to make it work."
Liz sat there silent for a while and then randomly stood up from the bed, "This is all wrong. Ramon talked about you all the time; he even talked about you wearing those converses to Zander's party that one time." Liz smiled.
"It's fine, people can change their mind." I said wiping my eyes and pulling my hair back into a messy bun. "And I'm fine; I just needed to simulate the idea in my mind. Things don't always work out to my advantage."
"Yeah they don't, but this should've. As weird as my brother is, and as much as a player I know he is; he really liked you. He loved you Cadence, and still does. No one, especially my brother, gets over someone like you that quickly."
I laid back down on my pillow and took a deep breath in, "Well, this time he did."
That Monday, going back to school was hard enough; but seeing Ramon talking to Vivianna in the front of the school was the hardest. I tried not to be noticed, and it worked. Ramon seemed to have completely ignored me; I didn't even turn around because I didn't want to see what was happening.
"Ms. McKinnley I presume."
I turned around and saw my dad standing there with Frendline at his side, and a bouquet of flowers in his hand.
"Hey dad, hey Frendline, what are you guys are doing here?"
"Just checking out the school and visiting my hopefully bridesmaid?" Frendline said kind of wincing in waiting for my answer.
I laughed and hugged her, "Of course I will be. Dad why do you have flowers?"
"These are for you; I found them on the door this morning right after you left. I thought they were for your mom, but they say Cadence." My dad handed me the flowers and there was nothing on the card except my name.
"Well thanks, but do you know who they are from?"
"Dj said he saw that kid you were with a couple days ago, Griffin I think."
"Oh." I said sounding kind of disappointed. Parts of me were wishing that these were from Ramon, saying something about last night.
"Why do I sense some disappointment in your eyes," Frendline asked?
"No reason, I just have to get to class. Thanks for bringing me these and thank you for asking me to be one of your bridesmaids', I'll see you guys later."
They both walked away and I walked into my Literature class, and sat down in my regular seat; when a kid from my French class walked up to me and handed me a note.
"This guy came up to me and told me to give this to you. And he said that you would give me a flower if I did, you know for my boyfriend Pete."
I looked down at the note and looked around the class. "Do you know this guy?"
"Never seen him in my entire life; I'm not even sure he goes here. But hey he was cute." He took a long pause and stuck his hand out. "Are you going to give me the flower or not?"
I shrugged and handed him the flower, then opened the note, only to find the word Je.
It was around ten, when I realized that I forgot my French book inside my car. As I was running out trying not to get a tardy, another girl from French class walked up to me with a note.
"Hey Cadence, I think this is for you and I think that this," She said pulling a flower out, "Is for me." Then she walked away.
I looked down at the note and it said, "N'a pas". Either someone was trying to play a practical prank for national prank day or Griffin was trying too hard to get me back.
The day went rather well, I avoided Ramon and had a happy lunch. Except by now I had four notes. Together they said, "Je n'ai pas le temps de finir."
"Liz, do you think Griffin did this?"
"Wow, if he did; I'll dump Zander myself and go out with him." Liz joked.
I nodded and put the notes into my pocket and looked over at my flowers, which by now I only had one.
"Can I come over today?" Liz begged.
"Sure, but why?"
"I don't want to tell you." Liz said trying to run from me.
"What do you mean, just tell me." I said pulling her towards me.
"Ramon is having Vivianna come over today. I think they're dating now."
My mind froze and my eyes started to flutter and my cheeks began to get warm, but I simply nodded and made out, "Sure, you can come over." Then I got into my car and didn't say a word.
Liz was in the kitchen making cookies with DJ and his friend Jacob, while I sat on the couch with my mom.
"How was school?"
"Fine. How was home?"
My mom chuckled and shrugged, "It was ok, but someone kept on throwing rocks on your windows. You need to tell that Griffin boy to leave you alone, he left you a note."
My mom leaned over to the coffee table and handed me the note; it looked different from the others but it was clear that it was by him.
"We need to talk."
"Your dad had to shoo him away, until he finally left. You need to set that boy straight."
"Yeah obviously I do." I said repositioning myself on her lap.
"I'll get it." DJ yelled, while running over to the door and then opening it.
I looked behind me and saw that it was Edmund and Zander. "What are you guys doing here?"
"We heard that there was a party here." Edmund hooted. "I'm joking; we just came to hang out. Is that ok?"
"It's fine", my mom interrupted. "I was just about to go upstairs into my room for my afternoon nap. Have fun."
"Alright then, I'm guessing it's a party and I already ordered the pizza, so we're set." Zander cheered, before running to my couch.
We sat around eating my brothers and his friend Jacobs, burnt cookies and waited for the pizza. When finally the doorbell rang and I got up to go answer it, with the money in hand.
"You guys are insane," I laughed, just before opening the front door.
I looked down to count the money and looked back up, not to see the pizza man, but Ramon with the boxes in his hand.
Everyone got quiet and ran into the kitchen to see what was going on. "I know you don't work at Pizza Hut, but maybe you do. So here." I said handing Ramon the money.
"I don't want the money and no I don't work at Pizza Hut." Ramon said taking a step closer to me and setting the pizza down on the table next to the door. "I just want to talk to you."
"Well first off, did you get the notes?" Ramon asked, taking a deep breath in.
He wrote the notes? No that's impossible; everyone said that it was Griffin. "I didn't get any notes from you."
"YEAH SHE DID!" Liz shouted from across the room, before running to me and digging into my pockets. "She just doesn't think that they were from you."
Ramon smiled, and wiped the back of his neck, "Then my plan worked."
"You are supposed to have only one rose left, and four notes."
"So what?" I blandly answered.
"The notes read, I didn't get to finish. And I didn't, you left the diner before I could even say anything. And this morning, the first thing I thought about was how pissed off you were going to be for the day. So instead of being angry, I thought I would get you confused. You thought Griffin got you all this stuff, but kid didn't do anything but leave dents in your window."
"Ramon, I don't get where you are going with this."
"Just read the note attached to last flower."
I turned around and Liz handed me the flower and surprisingly enough, there was a note card at the tip of it. I opened it and it read, "I love you too."
"Yeah, that's what I was going to say last night."
I looked up at him and replied, "But Liz said that you and Vivianna are dating now?"
"Everyone is in on it, Cadence. It wasn't by coincidence that these guys are all here. Those people from French class, I paid them to give you those notes and pretend that it was Griffin who gave it to them."
I looked behind me and Dj, Jacob, Edmund, Zander, Liz and even my mom nodded in agreement to Ramon. "What am I supposed to say?" I croaked.
"Nothing." Ramon said leaning in and giving me a soft kiss. "You already said everything." Ramon said pulling me back in for another kiss.
"Wait, how do I know you won't get tired of me just like the other girls? How do I know that this will actually work?"
Ramon shrugged, and smiled at me, "You don't. And neither do I."
I shook my head and pulled him in for a kiss, he deepened the kiss and before I knew it my feet were off the ground and my arms were around Ramon. Ramon, not Zander or Edmund or Griffin, but Ramon the guy from the beginning.
I pulled away from a moment and giggled; Ramon didn't put me down and just planted a kiss on my cheek. "Why are you giggling?"
"Because I don't know, I guess I'm happy."
"Hopefully." Ramon said putting me down and walking into the house with me, hand in hand.
We walked over to the couch and everyone followed behind, with the pizza and cookies and drinks. Ramon's arm was over me, while he was eating his pizza. I couldn't help but stare at him.
He looked down at me staring at him and whispered in my ear, making my breath a little shaky. "Hopefully, you'll be even happier being my girlfriend?"
"Was that a question or a statement?
I sat up and gave him a quick peck on the lips, "Hopefully….that answers your question."
