Five Days Later

"Lacey Evans speaking." Lacey spoke into the phone that was propped on her shoulder while she typed.

"I've got the verdict." Jessie's voice filtered over the phone.

"And?"

"As I expected, Mr. Colby didn't pass the tests. Mrs. Colby, however, did, which means that Rebekah can be turned back over to her parents."

"That's great news! Bekah will be thrilled."

"Has she left for school, yet?"

"She's just finishing getting ready."

"Then I'll call the principal and get her excused for the day. You get Rebekah up to date, and I'll be over in a half an hour to pick her up. Sound good?"

"Sure."

"Great. See you."

"Adios."

Lacey hung up and whirled around in her swivel chair. "Hey, Bekah, can you come in here, please?"

"Yes?" The adolescent with blue eyes appeared, backpack slung over one shoulder.

"That was Ms. Calhoun on the phone. She said you've been cleared to return to your parents. She's calling your school and getting you the day off. She'll be here in a half an hour to pick you up, okay?"

Rebekah beamed. "I'll go get my stuff together."

Jessie arrived a half an hour later, as promised. "Are you ready, Rebekah?" She asked.

"Yes, ma'am."

"Good. Have you said goodbye?"

"Yes."

"All right, then, let's get you home."

After giving Lacey a one-armed hug, Rebekah headed for Jessie's car.

"The state of Tennessee thanks you for your help." Jessie said.

"Well you tell Tennessee I'll help it anytime. It was fun."

Jessie smiled. "I'll keep that in mind."

"I know you will."
