i.

she was six years old and
felt so grown up;
that was the year she got
her ears pierced
and lost a friend for the
first time.

ii.

she was eight years old (the year
the darkness started creeping in)
and the girl across the table
would stare and stare and say
mean words
and that was the year she
realised how much words
can hurt.

iii.

she was nine years old and the
boys in her class would make fun of
her for her glasses
that was the year she got her friend
back and spent her lunchtimes reading
obsessively.

iv.

she was ten and got called a
bitch for the first time.
(it felt as though her whole world
had been shattered).

v.

she was eleven and the most
important person in her life left her
for the other side of the country.

vi.

she was twelve and even though
that year was black, it was the
best yet. she had real friends and
wore a dress for the first time in
years.

vii.

she was thirteen and completely out of place.

viii.

she was fourteen and had
red on her wrists and a blackness
in her heart (it's still there). that
was the year she walked through
like a zombie.

ix.

she was fifteen and determined to
come out of this alive. that was
the year she became
invincible.
