It all happened within seconds
a slid
a hit
a grunt
and pain
throbbing and pulsating in sync with my heart beat
my ankle cracked
and swelled up like a sponge

Tempted to take a saw
and amputate it right off
I turned my head
and refused to cry

Hopping to the bench
and with a bag of ice in hand
the coldness penetrated
and numbed the injury

I refused treatment
refused to be helped for a mistake I made
as I counted the days, weeks, months
that I sat on the sidelines
watching life play out
on the field

And it all happened within seconds
