Hey everyone! This is a poem I wrote in about 5-10 minutes for history. It's based on a woman's tale of surviving the bombing of Nagasaki in WW2. If anything sounds odd to you it's most likely because I took it from her story. I hope you enjoy it.

My Nagasaki

Silence
deep in the earth we wait
huddled in fear
Do we dare?
Do we dare exit?
What has come of the world above?
Silence
Shouts of those above,
suddenly still
Bright light, through the cracks
what has come of the darkness?
What will become of us?
Not a test
not a false alarm
not something to ignore.
But they did
are they now?
Are they laughing at us?
Waiting for us to emerge
to a world like that we exited
in fear?
open the door!
Let me return to a world I know!
Wait
they say
Something is knocking
weak
steady
They nod, open doors
what we see
I can hardly bare
Lizards?
animals?
What are these thing?
No!
NO!
They are our people!
Humans, these, these
THINGS!
What has happened?
Why?
How can they live,
with their flesh torn
ripped
grated from their burned bodies
I run
run past them
tears streaming down my cheeks
Screaming
but It is only a whisper
among the chorus of death
death and dying
I run, trip, fall
I turn to see a branch,
No!
A body
burned, shrivelled,
dead.
Why?
Why was I spared?
Eyes wide I scramble up.
Running, not stopping
Not looking
Not wanting to see
all that surrounds me
Death,
no more silence
not for the living
or the dead
Where,
where did my world go?
What is this place of death and ashes
of weeping and silence
I run, but I will not escape
Never escape
this world
ashes to ashes
Living to dead
Quiet
quiet to screams
screams to silence
silence
Never silent
Will I wake?
Where am I?
This is not the world I knew
But now,
this is my world
I know it now,
But I will never forget
The silence I heard
the world
I knew.
Silent
We will never be silent
We will never forget.
My Nagasaki

Let me know if I should use this for my history project. Or any way to improve it.

Thanks!

(Oh, the lizard reference if directly from this woman's story. I just had to use it.)
