I walked down the cold, dark street. I have had enough. My parents were arguing once more, and then they aimed their anger at me. I didn't have anywhere to go, but nowhere was better than a place I used to call home. I breathed out, I hated my life. Even that was an understatement. I sat down on a bench on the street and stretched my legs out. I've been walking for an hour now, and I was tired. It was about midnight according to my phone. No missed calls from my parents; showed how much they cared. Just made the strong feeling in my stomach, stronger. I was not going back.

"Hey there," A strange man sat down next to me. My muscles tightened as I stared at the ground. "I'm not going to hurt you," He told me. I couldn't help but look at him then. The first thing I noticed was his eyes. They were dark, deep and glittering. "What's your name?" He asked me. I swallowed and then answered, "Demi. You?"

"Joe," He grinned, "You got a place to stay tonight?" I breathed out. "No, I don't. I doubt I can ever go back there again," I said honestly.

"Why don't you come back with me? I have an apartment not far from here. I live there with some mates. There is a payment though," He added on the end. I thought about it. "What's the payment?" I asked nervous. I had a gut feeling of what it was, but I had to make sure. "Well you know, sex, drugs. That's about it," He shrugged like it was no big deal. I was still a virgin. I was a total goody two shoes, and he expects me to do those things? "Okay," I agreed, "I'm warning you though. I'm a virgin, and I've never done drugs before." He nodded, a slight smile on his lips.

He walked me to his place, asking me questions about my life the whole time. It took about half an hour to walk to his apartment. "I thought you said it was close," I joked.

"Relatively close," Joe corrected himself. He seemed different since I started talking to him; less scary. "Look, before we go in, I'm warning you that these guys are a bit full on, so if they say anything offence, I'm sorry," He searched my eyes. I took a deep breath in, preparing myself before I nodded.

He opened the door, smoke wafting out of the room as we walked in. It smelt of drugs in here, and sure enough, there were three boys on the sofa stoned out of their minds. "Looky here! We have ourselves some entertainment tonight!" One of them cheered. They all laughed, apart from Joe. Another guy stood up and stumbled over to me, grabbed my arm and pulled me next to him on the sofa. "Here. This is the good stuff right here," He said as he picked up a needle and refilled it with some drug.

I glanced over at Joe who was watching me closely by the kitchen corner. He didn't have that same look in his eye when he sat down next to me and picked me up. No, he looked worried now. He didn't respond when I looked at him, he just stayed expressionless. The guy took my arm harshly and lay it across his lap. "Here we go. Let's find a vein and then the fun begins. I bagsy her first!" He called to the guys. I swallowed hard, closed my eyes tight and then turned my head away. I hated needles. Why did I agree to this?

"Stop!" Joe called to this random guy. I opened my eyes and watched him walk over and take the needle out of the guys hand. "We shouldn't force her to do this, it's not right," Joe told them. He took me by the elbow and lifted me up. "We need to get you out of here," He whispered to me.

"But I need a place to stay?" I reminded him. He smiled a little and then led me out of the apartment, all the guys moaning behind us. "I know. That isn't actually my apartment. It's a long walk, but you don't have to pay me in anyway. I'm sorry I almost did that to you," Joe breathed out as we started down the stairs and out into the night again.

"Why did you do that?" I wondered. Joe glanced at me, shrugging a little before he answered. "You seem different," He started.

"Different?" I repeated. He nodded. "How?" I wanted more information.

"I don't know. There is just something...something that makes me protective. It's hard to explain, but I can't let anything happen to you, I won't let anything bad happen to you," He promised me. I stared at him, relief washing over me. "Thank you," I breathed out as I kissed his cheek. My lips lingered on his skin for a second longer than needed before I pulled away. There was something about him too. God knows what, but there was. And that's what made me believe in his promise. I knew he would keep his word.
