The door opened and closed, jerking me back to reality. Matt's home. From shopping? Yes, shopping for food. I was pretty sure that was it.
Slowly, I lifted myself from the warm comfort of the couch. Why am I so lazy? Yawning and stretching my arms to the sky, I blindly made my way to Matt, managing not to crash into anything. Opening my eyes, I saw a disheveled Matt with grocery bags scattered around him. There was a red stain on his shirt.
"Matt…?" Something clicked in my sleep-clouded mind. That vermillion spot on him could be blood. He could be hurt! Please let me be wrong. "What happened! An accident...?"
He looked at the stain on his shirt. "Sorry. The tomatoes were crushed."
Relief and anger warred within me. Fury won. "Stupid! Who cares about the tomatoes!"
"I'm okay. I was just hit by a car." Then, he smiled, most likely trying to convince me that he was fine. "That's all!"
Complete and utter amazement stole my voice away. How in the world did this person survive so long? Concern gave it back to me.
"Are you hurt?"
"You were hit by a car and you say you're okay!"
"Would you rather have me be hurt?" I bristled.
"You jerk! I worry about you!" Tears stung my eyes. I spun around. Why was he able to foment so much emotion from me? I started to run from the room. Matt grabbed my arm.
"I'm sorry. I… I didn't mean to… It's… It's just that…" The door flew open, revealing Tammy. I swear that Matt looked relieved. That stupid, insensitive—
"Hellooooo, people! The fun has arrived!" She let herself in, stepping on the bags in the process. How on earth did she get the keys to my house?
She glomped Matt. I groaned.
"Who gave you chocolate? I'm going to kill that person."
Suddenly, I realized that I would be her next target. My eyes widened in horror. I hated hugs. Backing away slowly, I hoped she didn't notice me slipping away. Her head snapped to me. There was an inscrutable gleam in her eyes. She grinned.
Something hit my back, pushing me to the floor. She pinned me down and…
I punched her. She fell like a stone. She was out before she hit the ground.
"She's finally quiet for once. Anyway, what were you trying to say before—" I looked up.
Matt was nowhere in sight.
I was going to kill him.
Thank God for Tammy. She provided the perfect escape. I was just not quite ready to confess to Emma yet. I loved her; I just didn't know how to show it.
"MAAAAAAAAATT!" I flinched. Oh no. She was really furious. I was dead meat if she caught me!
I started running like crazy. I want to live! I WANT TO LIVE ANOTHER DAY!
AN: I had a different ending for this, but I like this one better.
