when the battle is over
is the hero allowed to be weary?
can he wipe his dotted brow
and take the weight off his feet
even though the burden he shouldered is gone?
can he gaze out to the littered battlefield
at lives which might have been
if a sword wasn't quite so cutting with it's Tongue
and lances not so impaling with their truths?
may he grimace at his life that
might have been
if the battle had raged on?
the scars he might procure
but the adrenaline to urge him on
and suddenly it becomes clear
and his billowing cape flys away with the wind
because the soldier realises
he is only a hero
whilst the battle is warred
