A Sky Full Of Lighters

By C. E. Malone

"This one's for you and me, living out our dreams
We're all right where we should be
With my arms out wide I open my eyes
And now all I wanna see
Is a sky full of lighters
A sky full of lighters"

Bad vs. Evil ft. Bruno Mars.

I stare up at sky, in awe as the Chinese lanterns lit the dark night sky up. The only thing that could make this moment even better, was if he joined me. But the chances of that happening are zero.

I remember the first time we met, face-to-face...

"Girls and boys. This is Jason McMillan, please make him feel welcome." Miss Smith had said to the class. He sat down next to Luke.

He had short, blonde hair with dark blue eyes, like the twilight sky. But as he stared at me, I remembered thinking 'He looks like an angel.'

Later that day he walked up to me in the playground, where I was sitting on the ground, playing with the autumn leaves. They were red, gold and orange. The orange leaves resembled my carrot-red hair which was shoulder-length.

"Hey. Can I play with you?" he said, looking down at me.

"Yeah! You can collect those leaves over there." I said pointing to the right where a big pile of leaves had been made by the school's janitor.

I sigh; those simple words nearly ten years ago had sparked a friendship that had lasted through Primary, Junior and Secondary school. But lately, I've been feeling more than friendship... more like... love. How cliché – to be in love with my best friend, who doesn't even know of my feeling.

"I knew you'd be up here." A voice said.

"Jason! Why are you here? You should be downstairs, being the life of the party." I say, with sadness in my voice.

He sits down next to me, and says, "Well... I didn't feel right without you next to me. You're like my guardian angel Katy."

He obviously doesn't see me as anything more than a good friend.

"Yes, I do." He says, quietly, bringing his lips closer to mine and then our lips touch.

"And now all I wanna see
Is a sky full of lighters
A sky full of lighters"
