Project D6490L

It seems to be coming along nicely. The structure is stable, body movements fairly convincing. Passing off as an old man would probably prevent civilians from recognizing the difference. But they're going to want one that resembles a young soldier, so they can cart off an army that is literally able to think the same thoughts at the same time.

The skin is rather flimsy; seems to be .02 off the final red count. Pupils dilate correctly, but only exposed to LED, which is odd. Eyes seem to be approx. 8 mm further than ideal, but humans aren't perfect either.

Wouldn't a too flawless face be suspicious?

Remember that when discussing the body tomorrow.

Still lifeless, though.

If it looked like Lulu, it would be too easy to sneak it past enemy ranks. She would easily be able to captivate the hearts of all adults.

Now I miss her. I wonder if I could get off shift early tonight...

Project D6490L

It can sit up and respond to normal every day conversation, but seems to still have trouble being creative or injecting emotion into its words. Charles spent an hour today trying to teach it to smile, but its face remains hopelessly impassive. It would be suspicious if the army looks like they all went through botox before joining the ranks... How frightening that they want this kind of espionage.

There is something missing still. The flamethrower seems to be working just fine, although it still needs to learn when to use it and when not to.

J. M. Si

Project D6490L

Lulu walked today, and D6490L walks as well. It can walk a good 5 m before it requires "rest"- although we are not sure why it is important for it to stop so often. The energy pack inside should last much longer than that.

Charles mentioned something disturbing today, but...

It seems to be searching for something, so it is hard to train it to shoot or spit and aim. The weapons must

1. be concealed

2. subtly used

More training will be required. If it cannot figure out how to burn the candle before the end of the month, we may have to tweak the intelligence up a bit more. There is always that entertainment-brought-up fear that they will take over the world, but it is simple enough to program an imperative.

General Gabriel visits in three weeks, and this candle burning problem better be solved by then. He will recognize a hack when he sees it.

General will be pleased by the results. We can do mingle testing with his approval. It will be vital to test his personality.

Charles seems to be of the strongest opinion that you could remove the chip and use an actual person instead. He seems to want to try, but how would you convince the Uppers to use a living person?

09:01 March 30th, 20xx

J. M. Si

Project D6490L

General Gabriel will be coming next week instead; delayed at the alternative foods lab. They are developing some other kind of biological warfare in there, and the word food is just used very, very loosely.

Lulu's 3rd birthday last night; her brother was quite jealous.

Shooting has improved to 94%, which is acceptable. Running is not good enough yet, but that is not as important right now.

There seems to be a kink in the learning progression- feeding it math equations is fairly simple, and languages are reasonable, but the accents leave far too much to be desired. Too monotone.

Blink rate may need to be doubled, but that will be up to the alphas. It seems a bit too slow. Reactions based on wind, dust, dirt in eyes still slow and unnatural, as is getting hurt.

Using someone who already has the capability of learning and speaking may be easier, but somehow it seems particularly ethically wrong.

General was impressed by the general motor skills, although I am fairly certain he expects a much quicker run time for actual deployment. Superhuman speed, perhaps.

Charles suggested implementing Cheetah, and if it cannot speed up, we may have to resort of mixing strands.

Subject did miserably in a minor social setting. All were aware of how unreal he was.

Lulu caught a cold during the party, so more analysis later.

10:26 April 5th, 20xx

J. M. Si

Project D6490L

Charles reporting:

Dr Jere Ming Si couldn't make it in today. The doting father, so unnecessarily worried about his child.

L's social setting seems to be significantly more difficult to program – not trivial at all. His accents are developing well and being learned very quickly, but his expression is not expressive enough to be convincing. Even though testers didn't know the true nature of the project, he was quickly ostracized by the human peers. His lack of knowledge of ostracization led to ignorantly bothering others, leading to further dislike by all testers.

I wanted to install some ability to detect jokes based on muscles and voice tone, but Jere insisted it was not important to laugh. It's, of course, much easier to like someone who laughs rather than someone who's too serious.

I may tweak the codes slightly.

J. M. Si

Project D6490L

The muscles in D6490L are not working properly, now that the botox expressions are gone. It has hit an all time low in the uncanny valley, and it spooks people out now. We cannot have that kind of suspicion; no government would let in such a disturbing piece of work. All vocals have vastly improved however, and it can now speak fluently in dozens of languages. It can also hover, with the new F7YY chip installed. Slight lack of control, but otherwise very good.

02:50 July 6th, 20xx

J. M. Si

Project D6490L

Lulu is still ill, and not recovering.

Meanwhile, D6490L is non-functional again. Apparently a sense of humor is dangerous for an automaton. The facial muscles are still wrong somehow, although it is getting harder to pinpoint where exactly. It seems it may be in the crinkling of the eyes of the slightest twitch of the mouth to show it is alive...

Charisma seems to be an important factor we cannot implement. The computer team has spent the last few months trying to find a solution, but it refuses to join a crowd as necessary. One passer-by tried to shake hands, and the skin sloughed off. There was an immediate panic and end to the testing session.

15:01 July 7th, 20xx

J. M. Si

Project D6490L

Charles reporting:

Jere has been taking days off more and more frequently. It's of little concern to me, but he was supposed to take care of L. He seems to have picked up a few too many details about the outside world and has become greatly unstable. I don't think it's going to work this way– he continues to blabber the same indistinguishable language that our language reader cannot translate, and all the stats have returned to almost three months ago.

00:41 July 9th, 20xx

J. M. Si

Project D6490L

Charles reporting:

D6490L has officially died, in a manner of speaking. It's unable to continue functioning even as a normal robot, and must be discarded. The microchip, however, I salvaged. The government will be coming for a functioning beta prototype at the end of the year, and I fully believe a human body would be best- to learn and to grow and, most of all, appear human.

20:21 July 12th, 20xx

J. M. Si

Project D6490M

Charles reporting:

Not sure whose body this is, but asking how the government provided a young, comatose patient is kind of out of the question. I guess foul play on their part, but there's no way to be sure.

Either way, M is recuperating from the operations today. As suspected, a real human takes to the chip rather well. The new under-skin under-armor will be able to keep M from getting killed, but at the same time if he gets a cut, he will still bleed. We're going to lessen the amount of food and drink he requires, but to some degree he will still require both.

Seriously didn't think it would be this easy.

On another note, it seems that Jere's daughter Lulu has been in the hospital for the past few days, unmoving. How ironic that our robot in the lab has more life than her right now.

18:12 July 21st, 20xx

J. M. Si

Project D6490M

Charles has been going behind my back and found someone who may or may not have willingly consented to becoming the government project. However, it seems that it is indeed working well, and modifications to the retina for enhanced telescoping eyes, as well as being able to fly a heavier body, all worked out perfectly. There are still a few tests to be done, but all in all a phenomenal improvement.

I am a little uncertain about having used this body, but considering the ethics of the project already, perhaps it matters very little.

22:51 July 23rd, 20xx

J. M. Si

Project D6490M

Charles was right. The modifications for D6490M have been created, and they take well to actual bodies much better than they do to our manufactured automatons. More rejections from the actual body were expected, but it seems the human body is malleable enough to absorb everything we hand it. If the subject were any younger, he would be able to grow normally, besides the weapons modifications we implemented.

We will run a diagnosis test tomorrow on the body. They are expecting one prototype by the end of the year.

Logic may be harder to program than initially suspected, but perhaps it is unnecessary to have it. We may be able to get by without perfecting that section; after all, humans are inherently flawed.

All weapons specs are perfect, and other analytical skills as well. The physical attributes have exceeded our expectations.

After the government approves of this beta, we will duplicate the chip to operate better; however, until then, we are not allowed to do so. It would be beneficial to some degree to be able to have many betas and allow them to interact with a party, but they are not willing to provide a second body just yet.

J. M. Si

Project D6490M

It has been four months since Lulu fell ill, and they claim she will not recover. If I were a medical doctor...!

This is all so useless. Charisma is still too difficult, and while D6490M is an improvement, it is not enough to carry conversations. What we need is someone who is charismatic enough for people to fall in love with them and never fall out of love.

I may let Charles finish the diagnostics today. He seems eager enough to stay, and I am eager enough to leave.

13:33 August 16th, 20xx

J. M. Si

Project D6490M

Charles reporting:

OFFICIAL LEAD ON THE PROJECT THANK YOU JERE.

I had been doing research on the subject of getting people to love you, but I just realized last night that it would probably be much easier to just hand D6490M read the books himself and absorb the knowledge.

The imperatives have been set up, to make sure he doesn't try to kill anyone who isn't specifically a target. No problems so far.

22:48 August 25th, 20xx

J. M. Si

Project D6490M

Charles reporting:

M is an amazingly fast reader, what with the photographic memory and all. The human brain is truly limitless, and with the chip to help him sort and retrieve the information, he can access memories just as readily as a computer. I wonder if I could have a similar chip implanted in my own head- although I guess that'd be a little frightening.

He's already gone through fifteen-hundred titles, and is reading up on everything in our public library, from the top left shelf, in order. It would probably still be dangerous for him to know he's part automaton. It would be easier if we could make him believe in magic.

14:37 September 15th, 20xx

J. M. Si

Project D6490M

Charles reporting:

Lulu has fallen into a comatose state. Even when he's here, Jere is barely paying attention to anything he does. Today, when training M to pretend to enjoy food- it seems our modifications leave him without the sense of taste, although the nervous system is still intact- he himself stopped as if he malfunctioned. His phone going off snapped him back to reality, but he shoved M backwards to get up, and M smashed his head against the ground. It may take a bit to recover from that; hopefully none of the progress was lost. I suspect the phone call was from the hospital.

16:28 September 30th, 20xx

J. M. Si

Project D6490M

Charles reporting:

M is fully functioning again. It seems the only part that was damaged was a bit of memory, so a week of subliminal messaging should've recovered it all. I wish Jere would be a little more careful with him though, considering the check up's in a week.

17:56 October 4th, 20xx

J. M. Si

Project D6490M

Charles reporting:

Gen Gabe approved this time, so I think we're good to go for some beta testing. M's personality has become slightly sarcastic- not sure which book he picked that one up from- but it makes him much more lively and fun to be around at the same time. I think Gen Gabe actually enjoyed speaking with M today, which is a drastic compliment, considering he knew M wasn't exactly real.

At the same time, it's getting harder and harder to differentiate, especially since M was actually fully human once.

21:17 October 21st, 20xx

J. M. Si

Project D6490M

Charles reporting:

I think his daughter might be in serious danger- it seems she's fallen into critical condition. Jere won't be coming back to the lab for awhile.

That's okay though, M and I can handle it. M has become a surprisingly good friend, even if it's all learned from self-help books. There are times when I think I see his eyes glint, or his skin morph from epidermis to bulletproof, but he's trying to learn his own body.

I told Jere I would be out next week, and since no one will be manning the lab, he told me to use the imperative to make M sleep. If he's idly unwatched, he said, he still may be a danger. I don't think M is, but whatever floats.

It doesn't matter anymore. She has to live.

It has to work.

19:57 November 2nd, 20xx

J. M. Si

Project D6490N

Charles reporting:

The doctor's daughter passed away last week, and ever since the funeral he's been here working relentlessly on the new N prototype- The patient's tiny, and it scares me to think where the Uppers got her- she looks to be about three years old.

This is probably a great chance to test if hormone changes affect the body as well. The only concern I have is that M has dismantled, which means this girl is the only prototype we have.

...This may take some getting used to; I feel a bit queasy about operating on such a tiny person. There is no way it could have been truly consensual, could it?

17:04 November 8th, 20xx

J. M. Si

Project D6490N

Charles reporting:

My qualms can't overpower the facts.

She seems to have rapid growth, and learns even more quickly than M, perhaps because she's a child. Instead of her body rejecting the changes, it seems to have accepted them all.

In a few years, the extra artificial hormones will alter her face mildly to become the most attractive possible. Pre-existing personality and charisma: didn't know it was just a matter of who had the chip. The add-on chips, like hover, skin-tone change, feature distortion: all of them work as expected!

Jere seems to have thrown himself into work to distract himself. I wish I could do something.

18:32 November 19th, 20xx

J. M. Si

Project D6490N

Charles reporting:

Jere seems to have gone mad, and his own health is deteriorating. N is a remarkable improvement to M, in all specs. Especially frightening is her speed of learning.

There is something wicked about the doctor that I never knew before. As a more defenseless subject, sabotage would be much easier for a tiny female. Even if she grew up, a woman has and always will seem much less threatening, and it would even work for the crueler men who may want her for other things.

He hasn't spoken of his daughter to me lately, but I've heard him muttering her name. I'm a bit surprised he isn't at home with his wife, who I'm sure is still grieving...

23:56 November 20th, 20xx

J. M. Si

Project D6490N

Charles reporting:

Jere will not let me near the body. I told him as a military unit she would need the weapons, but he won't let me operate. We're exactly one week away from the deadline. I don't know what he's planning to do. He promises he'll do them on his own, but for some reason, I don't think he will. Something's going on, and I'm not sure what.
