The Dream Chronicles
The Dream Apex
The junkyard had that sort of smell, Kyle noticed, that made him want to hide under his covers and wish he didn't have a nose. His face scrunched up in disgust as they walked past a particularly nasty pile of garbage. Katrina plugged her nose with one hand while the other lazily dragged Mr. Goff's trash can through the mud. Her dark blonde hair was plastered to her face due to the rain, making her look like a drowned rat.
Kyle blew a strand of his shaggy blond hair out of his eyes. "Why, SURE Mr. Goff! We'd be HAPPY to drag your stinky garbage cans to a stinky junkyard in a thunderstorm. Money? Forget about it! Katrina, I hate you."
Katrina rolled her eyes. "Stop being such a baby. We've only walked like two blocks."
"Let's just get this over with," Kyle stated, dumping the can's contents into the center pile of the junkyard. Katrina followed suit, hefting the overfilled can over her shoulders and emptying its contents.
Kyle shivered, wishing in afterthought that he had brought a jacket. "C'mon, let's get out of here. The smell is starting to make me nauseous."
Over the course of those few minutes it took for them to reach the junkyard, the storm had grown steadily worse. The sky was a sickly green, black clouds billowing in from the west. Rain water began to pool at their feet as the sky let loose a bellowing roar. The wind picked up in speed and force, blowing small pieces of garbage throughout the yard.
Kyle braced himself against the junkyard fence as a strong gust of wind tried to knock him off his feet. "Katrina let's go!"
Katrina shook her head in agreement as she clutched desperately at Kyle's dark blue polo to avoid falling on her behind and getting mud all over her red plaid skirt.
As they were leaving, a bright light in her peripheral vision distracted Katrina, causing her to stop dead in her tracks. Kyle kept walking blissfully unaware as she backtracked to the recesses of the junkyard. Behind an especially huge junk pile, an assortment of colored lights could be seen. She vaguely heard Kyle calling out for her as she rounded the corner.
"Wow..." she breathed a sigh of amazement. It was so beautiful, the blues and greens seemed to shimmer and even appeared to grow brighter as she came closer.
Katrina was startled out of her thoughts as a hand grabbed her from behind and spun her around.
"Kat, what do you think you're doing?"
Katrina put a hand over her heart, breathing heavily. "Kyle! Don't do that again; you scared the heck out of me!" Slapping him on the arm, she turned back to the strange object that had stolen her attention.
Kyle's eyes widened at the sight of it. "Uh... Katrina? What... What is that?"
Kyle's grip on her arm tightened as she took another step closer to the vibrant light. "I think it's a-whatyamacallit... vortex! Yeah, I think it's a vortex, like the ones on the SciFi channel?"
Kyle laughed nervously. "Yeah, well whatever it is, I think we should just forget we ever saw it and go home. Come on," he turned and started to leave before he realized Katrina wasn't following him. She felt like she couldn't take her eyes off of the shimmering vortex.
As she tentatively reached a hand towards it, the vortex began to erratically pulse. It felt as if they were near a giant vacuum as the vortex began to suck Katrina towards it. On instinct Kyle latched onto Katrina's arm in an attempt to pull her away from the dangerous anomaly, but to no avail. With a startled scream, they were both sucked into the mysterious vortex.
The junkyard was eerily quiet as the storm died down and the sun came out, shining on two lone garbage cans forgotten in the dirt...
