"Something terrible is going to happen and I think it's my fault."
Hey, my name's William Johnson. I'm just your average teenage kid. I live in the small town Summerset. It's a pretty nice place to live. I've been here for as long as I can remember with my aunt. My parents died when I was really young. No one ever told me how but I think they are trying to save me from the pain or something. I don't mind living with my aunt. She's pretty cool most of the time. As far as Summerset High goes, well, let's just say I'm not too popular. My only friend is Bella who's been my best friend ever since the 5th grade. It's not that I don't try to get along with people. Bella calls me "Socially Challenged" meaning it's not so easy for me to talk to people. It's probably because I'm the most sarcastic person in the world. So Bella sees this flyer for a new club for Sci Fi geeks and tells me to join it. She says it'll be a good way to make friends. Of course Bella doesn't understand that little green men from Mars and astrology are two totally different things. But she made the 'face' and I caved in. Damn her cuteness! However what happened at the club changed me. I will remember it for as long as I live.
I was holding the crumbled up Sci Fi flyer as I knocked on the class room door. A blue faced boy opened it. I almost opened my mouth to say "So where are the other Smurfs?" but I managed to stop myself.
"Um, is this the Sci Fi club?" I asked knowing the answer.
"Affirmative, welcome earthling." The blue boy said welcoming me inside.
It was what you would expect. A classroom with a couple of Star Wars, Star Trek, Firefly, Aliens posters on the walls.
"I'll introduce you to our club." The blue boy said.
"That's Ronald our resident treky." He pointed to a boy who was wearing a Star Trek jacket.
He gave me the Vulcan "Live long and prosper" sign. I felt embarrassed that I knew that and did it back.
"Arnold, he's the Jedi master." The boy looked a lot like Luke Skywalker.
If he had glasses and braces. "That's Tracy, she's our alien freak." The alien freak was pretty hot.
Black hair, green eyes and a mischievous smile.
"So who are you?" I asked.
"I'm Jake." The boy said.
" No I meant what are you supposed to be?" I asked.
"I'm a robot." He said.
I then noticed the silver vest and shiny buttons. I was a little distracted by the blue thing to notice them before.
"So why are you blue then?" I asked confused.
The blue boy turned purple (red plus blue=really awkward blush).
"A couple of Andy's goons did this to me." Jake said.
"Hmm, well, at least you look like a really cool alien." I said.
"Really? You think so?" Jake said brightening up.
"For sure, you look an Andalite like uh Ax from Animorphs." I said quickly.
"Sweet!" He said brightening up.
I walked over to look at the posters a little more closely.
"You do realize that Andalites have eye stalks and no mouths." Tracy said looking at me.
"Yeah, I know but it was the first blue alien that popped into my head." I said.
"Not a bad series though. Ending was a bit lacking in my opinion." Tracy said thoughtfully.
"Well, depends on where you're coming from." I said.
Tracy grinned that mischievous smile and my heart skipped a beat. Damn it, I'm useless around cute girls.
"Well, club chairman or erm chairwoman, what's the first order of business?" Jake asked Tracy.
Well, there's an interesting twist. The hot girl makes a sci fi club.
"Well, I'm first making our newbie here catch up on his reading and watching. Here's a list of movies and books you need." Tracy said.
Star Wars, Star Trek, Hitchhiker's guide to the universe, Aliens, and a ton of others.
"Wow, isn't this a bit much?" I asked.
"If you want to be in this club then you're gonna have to. Go to a library or get Netflix or something." Tracy said shrugging.
Sarcastic, Smart and Hot. I think I just meet my dream girl.
"If you say one more thing about that Tracy girl, I'll shove my "mashed" potatoes down your throat." Bella threatened.
It was lunch time and I've been at the Sci Fi club for a week now. I've been telling Bella everything particularly about Tracy.
"What do you think would happen? Would I choke to death first or die of food poisoning?" I asked letting the slop fall from my spoon.
"The world may never know. Or care." Bella said in her best announcer voice.
"Will, if you are so in love with her just ask her out." She told me.
"I don't know, we made a deal right." I said in a very suggestive tone.
"Idiot, we made that promise when we were kids. I'm not gonna marry you if neither of us can get a stable relationship. Oh by the way, in case you don't know, married people don't have sex." Bella said.
"That not what I heard." I said grinning.
Bella rolled her eyes. "I don't know if I should. Tracy doesn't exactly seem my type." I said.
"Dude, she's you with boobs." Bella said flatly.
"That's it. I don't exactly want to date myself. Even though she's a hot version of me." I said.
"Well, maybe she's your long lost twin sister or something." Bella said.
"She can't be my long lost sister. First, we don't look alike. I have brown hair she has black. I have blue eyes she has green. Second, twins don't always act the same. Finally, if she was my twin sister it'll be really creepy that I have the hots for her." I said.
"Wouldn't that be an Oedipus complex?" Bella asked.
"Nah, that's when you want to do your mom." I said.
We both shuddered. "That dude seriously needs to get out more." Bella said.
The bell rung. "I'll see you later Bella. I'm gonna have to meet the club at the park tonight" I said taking off.
It was a bright starry night. Tracy thought it would be nice to come out to the edge of town to do our club stuff. The stars will help with the mood she said. I've been into stargazing recently so it was fine by me.
"It's a beautiful night." I said in awe of the glittering stars.
"Isn't it? Who knows what's out there?" Tracy asked.
I shrugged. "Thanks for bringing your telescope." Tracy said.
"Well, all the better to serve you my queen." I said in a regal tone and bowing low.
"Funny," She said sarcastically.
"Hey, uh Will, I think something's wrong with your telescope." Jake told me.
I looked into it and saw a large object that was a little close. I fiddled with it but it was still there. I looked at my telescope closely.
"Hmm, that's odd. It doesn't seem tampered with.." I said.
I looked in the direction of the object. Suddenly, a feeling of dread came over me.
"RUN!" I yelled.
"What the hell are you talking about? Is this some kind of joke?" Arnold asked.
"I'm serious. That thing is coming straight for us. We have to move NOW!" I said frantically.
The boys saw the look on my face and ran. "I'm not stupid. I'm not gonna fall for your trick." Tracy said crossing her arms.
"I thought so." I mumbled under my breath.
I picked her up and carried her. "What the hell? Put me down you ass!" Tracy said punching me.
Ignoring my sore check (man that girl can punch) I ran off. Not a second too late as the large object crashed into the ground making a large crater.
"What should we do?" Jake asked.
We were all hiding behind some tress looking at the cube object.
"Let's call the cops." Ronald suggested.
"They are probably already on there way. I mean, who couldn't hear that crash?" Arnold said.
The bad feeling I had intensified. This is not good I thought.
"We better get out of here." I said.
"Why? This is the discovery of a lifetime. This could be some kinda alien device." Tracy said.
"Or it could be some kind of satellite that crashed." Arnold said sensibly.
Tracy went closer to the object and Jake and Ronald followed her.
"We shouldn't get that close." I said.
"Come on, this is too cool." Tracy said as she looked around for a door.
I sighed and followed them. It was a large silver box that looked like a space Gamecube.
"Do you think it might be a spaceship?" Tracy asked me.
"I don't know. There doesn't seem to be any opening." I said looking over the strange object more curious than scared.
I looked at this small red circle that seemed to be in the center. When I got a little closer to look it started to glow. I jumped backwards and so did everyone else. The red circle spilt in half revealing a door.
"What kind of alien do you think it is?" Tracy asked.
"Maybe it's like E.T?" Jake suggested.
"Or it could be an alien from Aliens." Ronald said darkly.
The same bad feeling came over me. What ever it is, it's not good. I could see the red glowing eyes and the large toothed grin. We were all terrified. Before the alien could move someone yelled
"What are you kids doing here?"
We all turned around and it was Officer Jim West. He was one of the few cops who weren't old and useless in Summerset. He was in his early twenties and had his brown hair cropped short. He was Bella's older brother so he knew me well. He had what Bella called a "Porno Mustache". Of course he would fire back asking how she could know that. Bella would than smile innocently and say she heard it somewhere.
"Will, what are you doing here?" He asked.
"Jim, there's some kinda of alien here look!" I said pointing at a large rock.
Wait, wah? "What the hell? What happened to the spaceship?" Jake asked going over to the large rock.
"Where's the scary alien?" Ronald asked.
"Okay, you kids have been watching way too many horror movies. How about I take you guys home?" Jim offered. We all agreed after all Jim did have a gun.
"Johnson, pay attention!" My third hour history teacher yelled at me.
"Wahzat?" I mumbled sleepy.
My teacher threw up his hands. "What is wrong with you? You look like you haven't slept a wink." Bella asked me at lunch.
"That's cause I haven't." I said falling on her lap snoring. Bella lifted my head up and let it fall on the metal bench. I woke up with a start.
"The Declaration of Independence." I said raising my hand.
Bella took her bottled water and poured it over my head.
"Alright, I'm awake. Sheesh." I said.
"Now tell me why you didn't sleep." Bella asked.
"If I told you, you would think I was crazy." I said.
"I already think you're crazy." Bella said grinning.
"I'm serious. Something really bad happened last night." I said.
"Tracy turned out to be a dude." Bella said.
I glared at her. "Okay, no more jokes. So tell me." Bella said.
"Last night a space ship landed at the edge of the town and there was this really scary alien in it. I think it might still be loose." I whispered.
Bella looked at me blankly. "See I knew you wouldn't believe me." I said.
Bella looked at me closely. "What? Do I have a zit or something?" I asked.
"An alien huh?" Bella asked. I nodded.
"Alright then, I believe you." She told me.
"Really?" I asked in surprise.
"I'm your best friend. I can tell when you're screwing around and when you're serious." Bella said.
I smiled. "These are the times when I feel all mushy inside." I said.
"You start singing and I'll shove my foot so far up your ass you'll choke on it." Bella growled.
"Then you say something like that and I'm scarred for life." I mumbled.
"So what does this alien look like?" Bella asked me.
"I didn't get a good look at it before your Porn star brother showed up." I said.
Bella smirked. "I don't know Bella but I just have a really bad feeling. Something terrible is going to happen and I think it's my fault " I said.
"Why would you think that?" Bella asked.
"It's just a feeling." I said.
After school let out I saw a very tired looking Tracy, Jake and Ronald waiting for me.
"So you guys didn't sleep either?" I asked.
They shook their heads.
"Will, Arnold is missing." Tracy said.
I felt a chill go up my spine.
"W-What do you mean?" I stammered.
"No one has seen him since last night." Ronald said.
"He was right with us." I said.
"He was hiding behind a bush the whole time." Jake said.
"I'm sure he just went home afterwards." I said uncertainly.
"He never made it home. I'm guessing he ran off into the woods when he saw the alien and gotten lost. There the alien could pick him off easily." Tracy said flatly.
"No, this is not happening. " I said.
"I don't know Will, that alien looked pretty real to me." Jake said.
"I'm sure that Arnold is fine. He's probably waiting for us at the club." I insisted.
We all walked over to our club down the only poorly lit hallway in the school. We were all huddled together as we opened the door to the club room.
"Oh my god." Tracy said covering her mouth with her hand.
I looked at the room numbly. "This is not good man, not good." Ronald said terrified.
Jake promptly fainted. I walked inside the room. It was covered in blood. That can't be him, no it's not I thought to myself. There was no denying the blonde hair now covered in blood, the broken glasses and the mouth open in a silent scream containing braces and the body with three large gashes on it. It was Arnold and he hung from the ceiling dead. I noticed something else. On our desk was his hand neatly cut off from the rest off his body. Just like Star Wars I thought before I threw up.
After the police was done interviewing me I was sitting on the school steps with a blanket around my shoulders.
"Hey," Bella said sitting down next to me.
"Hey," I said flatly.
"Are you okay?" Bella asked.
"I just saw a dead body hanging from a ceiling, what do you think?" I snapped.
"I'm sorry," Bella said snapped.
I sighed. "No, I'm sorry. I shouldn't have yelled at you. It's just well, I'm kinda touchy right now." I said with a bitter smile.
"Do the cops have any idea who could have done this?" Bella asked.
I shook my head. "Do you?" She asked.
"It was that alien. It killed Arnold." I said simply.
"Well, then you have to tell someone." Bella said standing up.
I gave her a look. "Oh right, no one will believe you." She said sitting back down.
"So what are you gonna do?" Bella asked.
"Try not to die." I said dryly.
"Come on Will, you can't just give up. That's not your style. Who was the guy who knew he had no chance to make it on the basketball team but tried out anyway?" She asked.
"That would be me." I said.
"Who was the guy who knew that Jessica Patrick would never go out with him but asked her out anyway?" Bella asked.
"Okay, I get the point." I said.
"Who was the guy who knew that the wrestling team was stronger than him but still tried to fight back?" Bella asked.
"Okay, sheesh. You're starting to make me sound like I'm stupid not brave." I said.
"Well, there's a fine line and let's just say you use it as jump rope." Bella said grinning.
"Okay, you're right. Not about me being stupid but about not giving up. I've watched enough horror movies to know that I'm the unlikely hero." I said.
"Or the dumb nerd who dies off-screen." Bella said.
I glared at her. "I'm gonna go find the rest of the club. I'm thinking we should stick together." I said running off.
"Please be careful Will." Bella said softly.
"What are we going to do?!" Ronald said frantically.
We were all at my house which is now our temporary club meeting spot since our class at school was now a crime scene.
"Maybe it wasn't the alien. " Jake said. I pulled a piece of paper out of my pocket and tossed it in the middle.
It had a strange circular shape that they recognized. It was the same shape on the ship that we saw.
"Still think it wasn't the alien?" I asked.
"Did you show the cops this?" Tracy asked me.
"I did but they couldn't figure it out." I said.
"Oh man it is the alien." Ronald said.
"It's gonna come after us next." I said.
"What can we do?" Jake asked me.
"Try not to die." Tracy mumbled.
"We can't give up. I'm sure we can figure out how to stop this guy. I said.
"Like water in The Signs?" Jake asked.
"No, because that would be fucking stupid." Tracy, Ronald and I all said.
"I know maybe bullets." Tracy said faking enthusiasm.
"That could work and I think I know where we can get some." I said.
"Let me get this straight. You want me to go to my brother's room, steal his keys to the police weapon lock up and help you guys steal some." Bella said. "
Pretty much." I said.
Bella shook her head. "You do realize how stupid that is." Bella said.
"Yeah," Tracy said.
Bella grinned and pulled a key out of her pocket. "I already made a copy to his keys a year ago." Bella said.
"I think I'm in love." Ronald said dreamily.
"No way dude, I call dibs." Jake said.
"Well, both of you are wrong. We're already engaged." I said smirking.
Tracy looked at us boys who were arguing and looked back at Bella.
"Do you always have this effect on boys?" Tracy asked her.
"What can I say? It's a gift." Bella said shrugging.
We all waited until the lunch break and snuck in the police station. We each took a couple guns and a couple of clips. They shouldn't notice anything is gone for a while. We were all a little nervous. We couldn't bring our guns to school but we stashed them close by in case we needed them. We all agreed not to go anywhere at night. This was the most important rule and it figures that it was the first one broken.
I was at home staring at the weird sign. It was seriously bugging me. It was familiar and I didn't know how. Was is something in a movie that looked like this? Maybe a game? Or did I see this when I was younger? I tried to remember but it was blank. I just can't remember when I younger.
"I know I've seen this somewhere before. But, where?" I asked myself aloud.
"Yo, can I come in?" I heard someone say.
I jumped up. "Relax Will, it's just me." Bella said from outside my door.
"How do I know it's you and not the alien in disguise?" I asked.
Bella sighed. "You still have all your old Poke'mon cards from when we were young in mint condition." Bella said with a hint of relish.
"Okay, you passed the test." I said.
I sat back down. "So you still have no clue what that means huh?" Bella asked.
"Yeah, I'm pretty stumped." I said.
"Maybe your just imagining it. I mean you have been through a lot." Bella said.
"Maybe, but I just can't shake this feeling that this is something I've seen before." I said leaning back in my chair.
My cell rang and I picked it up.
"Hello?" I said.
"WILL, YOU HAVE TO HELP ME." I heard Ronald shout.
The hairs on the back of neck stood up.
"It's the alien isn't it? Ronald where are you?" I asked.
Click! The phone went dead. "Ronald's in trouble. Damn it, I told them not to go anywhere at night." I said.
"You go after him and I'll go get the others." Bella said.
"Did he tell you where he was?" Bella said.
"Caller ID." I said holding up my phone. Summerset Public Library.
I held the pistol tight in my hands as I opened the door of the pitch black building. The alien must have cut the lights. I thought about using my phone as a light but I didn't want to attract the alien's attention. So I didn't call out either. I padded around the selves in the pitch black. I froze my heart pounding so loudly in my chest that I was sure that someone must have heard it. Something was on the other side of the self. It was too loaded with books to see through to the other side. It was that alien. I'm sure of it. I held the pistol up and then went to the edge. I took a deep breath and whirled to the other side.
"Will, it's me Ronald." Ronald said holding out his hands.
I sighed in relief. "Are you okay? Is you know who here?" I asked.
Ronald nodded unable to speak. "Come on, we have to get the hell out of here." I said.
"No shit." Ronald said.
We walked through the selves quietly. We looked around and found the dead body of the librarian.
"Oh God, this thing is gonna kill us." Ronald said.
We heard movement. Ronald stood behind me and I tightened my grip on the gun.
"Relax guys it's me." Tracy said.
Jake and Bella were with her too. "Let's move, Ronald is safe so let's go." I said.
"Okay, I'll-" Ronald stopped in mid sentence.
A look of horror was on everyone's face. I turned around and saw that a large blade was sticking out of Ronald's chest. Ronald tried to speak but he gurgled up blood. The alien took out the blade and let Ronald fall to his knees. The alien swiftly beheaded him. Ronald's head rolled right to my feet. I was frozen in terror. I couldn't even breathe.
"Damn it!" Bella yelled shooting straight at the alien.
It ran away and disappeared. "We have to get out of here. The cops are going be here any second." Tracy said grabbing my shoulder.
"You don't have to be a cop's daughter to know that three teens with guns at the scene of the crime is pretty suspicious." Bella said.
I nodded and we all ran out of the building.
We all met up at my house again. "This thing is killing wildly now. We have to stop it." I said.
"Why do we have to stop it. Let the police handle it." Tracy said.
"The cops haven't seen the alien. They won't believe us." Jake said.
"No, it has to be us. We have to lure it into a small space where we can kill it." I said.
"Where did you have in mind?" Bella asked.
"The old shack in the woods. It's small and pretty uninhabited up there. If we can trap it inside there than we can take it out." I said.
"How? Are you gonna blow it up or something?" Tracy asked. "Bella, they do have grenade's in the lockup right?"
We all set up the trap. I was the bait because I got the short straw. I was in the woods alone waiting for the bastard.
"Good luck dude." Jake said.
"Try not to get killed." Tracy said.
I looked at Bella. "What? Are you hoping for something?" Bella asked grinning.
"Isn't this the part where the heroine admits to her feelings for the badass hero?" I asked smirking.
"Don't count on it. Don't die yet, I need someone to push around." Bella said.
"Gee, I have something to look forwards to then." I said.
Bella left and I was in the dark woods.
I was walking around unarmed to look more like an easy target. Man, I hope this doesn't backfire. I heard rustling. The bastard is actually falling for it. I started to run towards the shack. I heard it coming near me.
"Phase 1" I said to my Bluetooth headset.
A bomb went off behind me and the footsteps slowed. It'll take more than that to kill him. I was nearing the shack and I could hear it trying to come from above.
"Phase 2" I said.
Small mines that were stuck to the trees started to blow up. Wow, our police department is like a freaking miniature army with mines and bombs and stuff. I opened the shack door and went to the edge of the shack. The alien burst in mad as hell. It was white/purple with glowing red eyes. It was lean and muscular and had a terrible looking blade in it's hand. It's mouth opened up in a shrill shriek revealing rows and rows of jagged teeth. It ran straight for me but got stuck in Phase 3. A small net trap. It won't hold him for long. I jumped straight out of the window yelling "NOW!". The shack lit up in flames with an enormous explosion. As bits and pieces fell my friends all ran up.
"We did it!" Jake yelled excited.
"That was amazing!" Tracy looking at me in awe.
I glanced at Bella. "Okay, okay. Maybe you are the unlikely hero." She said giving in.
"Aw, man." I said suddenly.
"What?" They all asked.
"I forgot to say a one liner. I should have been like "Hasta la vista baby" or "Choke on deez bitch" or "Burn bitch burn!" or maybe "Things are heating up for you" " I said thinking.
They all sighed. Jake walked over to the rubble to look at the dead body.
"Come on Jake, get away from there." Tracy said.
"Lighten up, how many times can you see a dead alien?" Jake asked.
A dark figure rose from the wreck.
"You have got to be fucking kidding me!" I shouted.
"JAKE! LOOK OUT!" Tracy yelled.
The alien snapped Jake's neck and he fell to the ground his eyes unblinking. Bella drew her pistol and shot at the alien but the bullets didn't even faze him.
"Run!" I said.
We all dashed with the alien hot on our trails. We made it to the same place it's ship landed.
"DAMN IT!" I said punching the rock.
Suddenly the ship appeared again.
"It was a cloaking device of some sort." Tracy said.
"That mother fucker tricked us!" Bella said kicking the ship.
The alien came towards us. "I'll try to hold it off as much as I can. You guys go for help." I said facing the alien.
"But he'll kill you!" Tracy said.
"Just go guys." I said.
"Gotcha." Bella said.
She dragged Tracy with her. The alien just let them go.
"I knew it. You wanted me don't you? You wanted me from the very beginning " I said.
"Clever tricks human but not good enough." The monster growled.
"Ah, so you can speak English now huh? Well, tell me this. What do you want from me?" I asked.
"I don't ask questions. I was sent to kill a Will Johnson and that is exactly what I'm here to do." It said.
We were circling each other. "Than why did you kill all the others?" I asked.
The alien opened it's mouth in what I think was a smile. "I was having a little fun." It said.
"You bastard." I said.
"What now boy? Another trap?" It asked.
I stepped backwards nearing the edge of the cliff. "Are you going to jump now?" It asked.
"Maybe I will. " I said looking over the edge.
"Then go on. Either way I get paid." It said.
I looked the cliff. I flipped him off and jumped over.
"I didn't think he would do it." The creature stepped close to the edge.
I reached up from the small ledge I was on and pulled him down.
"That first step is a doozy but the second ain't so nice either." I said as the alien fell to it's death.
I leaned against the side as I my phone rang. "Hello?" I asked.
"Nicely done William, you are indeed as clever as I thought." I heard an unfamiliar man say.
"Who are you?" I asked.
"Let's just say I'm looking over you and I'll be watching your progress. I do hope you'll do better in the next challenge."
Click! The phone was dead. Next challenge? That doesn't sound so good.
Another one of my older stories but I think this is is a lot better than Alone and I had a lot of fun writing this. I'm still debating whether or not to make this into a longer story since I do have ideas for it but I don't know if I have the time. Let me know what you all think!
