Mari waited outside of the post office. Daniel had told her that he got off at 4:30 pm and it was now 4: 35. What was he doing?
"Why are you waiting on him?" Her best friend, Jennika asked.
Mari sighed and looked at her.
"Because he's my friend, Jennika. I wait on you too."
Jennika played with her blonde hair. She gave Mari a skeptical look.
"If he was really your friend, he wouldn't ask you to wait for him."
Mari couldn't help herself. She started to laugh. She knew Jennika hated when people laughed at her, but the girl could be ridiculous sometimes.
"Stop laughing!" Jennika said slapping Mari's arm. "I'm telling the truth!"
"I'm sorry!" Mari said trying to catch her breath. "You know you're being ridiculous, Jen. I wait on you all the time."
Jennika frowned. "Yeah well it's never more than five minutes. We've been out here for twenty."
Mari smiled before looking toward the building.
"You can leave if you want to," Mari said fiddling with one of her gold hoop earrings.
Jennika got a mischievous look on her face. She came over to Mari and put her hands on her shoulder.
"You would like for me to leave, wouldn't you? So you can be along with Danny boy and you guys can kiss and all that good stuff," Jennika said pinching Mari's cheek.
Mari swatted Jennika's hand.
"You know it's not like that, Jen. We're just friends is all."
"Yeah sure and I'm the Queen of England. I see how you guys look at each other. Those little glances, his smirks. You can't fool me."
Mari sighed. The glass door opened and Daniel came out of the building. Mari smiled and waved at him as he made his way over to them.
"Thanks for waiting on me, Mari. I had to sort out a few things behind the counter," he said.
Marie nodded and smiled at him. Daniel smiled back before looking at Jennika.
"Hello to you too, Mr. Smith," Jennika said slyly.
Daniel grinned. They set off from the post office with Daniel walking a little ways before the two girls.
"So when are you going to confess your undying feelings for Danny boy?" Jennika asked elbowing Mari.
Mari rolled her eyes.
"You're always trying to set me up, Jen. I told you after the way things ended with my last boyfriend, I'm not looking for a new one."
"Well that's too bad as I think you and Mr. Smith would get along swimmingly."
Mari laughed. "Of course we would, we've been friends for awhile."
Jennika slung her arm across Mari's shoulder.
"Yeah, but you and I both know that you want it to be more."
Mari didn't say anything but looked at Daniel's back. Did she want it to be more? She wasn't sure, but she was glad she had him as a friend.
