"Heather! Heather!" A girl's voice shouts from another room. I awake from my daydream, and grab my pistol. I hear two more gunshots and a scream.
I run out of my room and do a quick scan of the area. I see Morgan on the floor, her flesh getting ripped apart by two zombies. I shoot the two zombies.
"What the hell?!" I shout at Mackenzie and Elizabeth, who stand in the corner, scared.
"The theatre is being overrun!" Elizabeth cries.
"What?!" I scream back, seeing about five more zombies walk up the stairs.
"The doors downstairs are open, and Meredith is no where to be found." Mackenzie explains to me, reloading her pistol and shooting a zombie in the shoulder, making it stagger back just a bit.
"We gotta get out of here!" I shout. "Where is everyone else?" Elizabeth points to the roof and I quickly run up the stairs.
"Max, Kenzie, we are leaving now." I tell them as they look over the wall, Max holds a rifle.
"Ok." Max says, running down the stairs. Kenzie and Riley follow. Alex tries to come down, but Kenzie stop him.
"You are not coming with us!" She says, with no emotion.
"Now is not the time, Kenzie. Come on guys!" I grab Alex and we run down to the second floor. I see about a dozen zombies come up the stairs.
"We aren't getting out that way!" Kenzie screams at me.
"Scavenge what you can, we are taking shelter on the roof! Max, get the ammo and guns, Kenzie, get the food. Mackenzie, make sure the younger kids are safe. Alex, get some blankets, quickly! Go go go!" I shout, shooting a zombie in the neck. I keep shooting zombies until I run out of ammo, then run up to the roof with my friends following. I lock the door, and wipe the sweat off of my head.
"That door isn't going to hold up for long." Kenzie sasses at me.
"I'm not in the mood for your bitching, Kenzie." I say, walking over to the edge of the wall.
"Give me the blankets." I command Alex. I tie the ends together, and slowly inch it down to the ground.
"What the hell are you doing?" Kenzie asks.
"Planning an escape. I'm not dying at this theatre." I reply, with stress and anger in my voice. I pull the blankets back up and set them to the side.
"Heather, I need to talk to you." Alex says, trying to pull me away from the group.
"Anything you need to say, you say in the group, newbie." Kenzie harshly says.
"Please Heather." He looks like a sad, lost puppy. I sigh and walk with him away from the group.
"What?" I cross my arms.
"Meredith left-" He begins.
"No shit." I roll my eyes.
"Listen. She left last night, ok? She let the zombies in."
"That's great. How will this information help me?"
"I tried to stop her, but she got out and zombies started coming in. I tried to lock the doors, but I couldn't. During that, though…um…." He stops speaking, and pulls up his jacket sleeve. I gasp, and cover my mouth. A bite.
"From one of the zombies?!" I ask, eyes widen. He nods.
"I don't want the rest of the group to know, yet. I just…needed to tell you before I turned."
"How long until you turn?" I ask, staring at the bite.
"A day or two. It's a small bite, it'll take a while. Just, please don't tell anyone. Do you promise?" My head begins to ache and I nod. We walk back to the group in silence.
"Well, not we need to decide what to do with the traitor." Kenzie cocks her head to the side, staring at me.
"Lay off of him, alright?" I respond, in a threatening tone.
"No, I won't! Heather, you've become way to soft to these people! Have you forgotten that they are the ones who got Aaron killed? Who are trying to get us killed? You can't help every surviver! We need to focus on us surviving!" Kenzie shouts, loudly.
"Kenzie, I still have some humanity left in me! I'm not going to leave everyone to die when they can be saved!" I scream back.
"Oh of course, and we have to do what you say, cause you're the damn leader!" She mimics my tone.
"I'm a damn good leader!" I scream back, a little too snobby than I meant.
"Oh SUCH a good leader you are! Aaron's dead, we're going to die! If I was in charge, everything would be FINE!" She gets closer to my face, and crosses her arms.
"You know, maybe I should be leader." Her voice becomes quieter, but she still has that tone. I've never seen her like this.
"Kenzie, this is ridiculous. You just need to chill." I say, noticing the fear in Riley's eyes.
"YOU NEED TO CHILL?" She spats in my face. "No Heather, you need to be brought back to reality. All you do is day dream about the past. The world is over! The sooner you accept that, the better. But until you do, I'm going to be leader."
"This isn't a dictatorship!" I scream back. She will not be leader. As long as I'm alive, she will not.
"Then what is it?! A democracy?! You never cared about anyone's opinions but your own." She steps back from me and looks around.
"You know what, let's make it a democracy. If you want Heather to stay leader, speak up." Kenzie looks around and everyone is silent.
"I think this is ridiculous, that's what I think." Mackenzie mumbles under her breath. Suddenly, I hear a thump. I turn around, and I see Alex lying on the floor, unconscious.
"Alex?" I say, crouching by him. Is he turning already? I think to myself.
"Heather, what's wrong with Alex?" Riley asks.
"I don't kn-" I say, as Alex starts moaning. I put my hand on my pistol, that's in my pocket, as he stands. As a zombie.
"Get back!" I scream at everyone, holding my pistol up. I shoot his head, and he falls down, dead.
"The bastard was bitten?!" Kenzie asks.
"Obviously." Max replies
"He wasn't supposed to turn that fast." I whisper to myself.
"Wait, you knew about this?" Elizabeth's eyes widen. My cheeks burn and I shake my head no.
"Yes you did! You liar!" Kenzie screams at me.
"Alright, fine I did know. But he told me he wouldn't turn for a day!" I try to defend myself.
"Heather, you should have told us." Mackenzie says. I see the anger in her eyes.
"Guys, I'm really sorry. He was just scared. I was going to kill him before he turned, but I didn't expect it to be today." I sigh, holding back the tears.
"Alright, let's vote now. Who wants Heather to stay leader? Say I." Kenzie smirks, looking around.
"No one? Alright. Who wants me to be leader."
"I do." Elizabeth says without any hesitation.
"I do." Brooks and Brad say. I look at Mackenzie, my eyes filled with regret.
"Four out of eight. Mackenzie? Riley? Max? What is your decision?" Kenzie asks. They all look at each other.
"I want Heather to still be leader." RIley says quietly. I smile at her, but then quickly look up at Max and Mackenzie.
"Max, Mackenzie, please. I'm truly sorry." I say.
"This isn't something that's so easily forgiven." Mackenzie sasses.
"You're my sister! You're supposed to have my back on this!" I yell at her.
"And you are the leader! You should've handled Alex!" Mackenzie sighs. "My bad, you were the leader. I vote Kenzie takes over."
"Five out of eight. Majority wins." Kenzie smiles, holding her hand out. "Give me the gun."
"How could you?" I mouth to Mackenzie as I hand Kenzie my pistol.
"What's that sound?" Elizabeth asks, looking towards the sky. I scan the sky, and I see a small helicopter.
"It's a helicopter!" Max says, his first words in a while.
"Down here!" Elizabeth, shouting and jumping in the air. The helicopter turns and lowers closer and closer to the roof.
"Get in!" A boy, about 3 years older than me shouts from the helicopter.
"Let's go." I say, grabbing the ladder the boy drops down. As I begin to climb, Kenzie grabs my arm.
"You aren't coming with us."
