ACTIVITY: Out of Context Line Homework
DATE: May 13, 2012 (created)
NOTES: This was a homework assignment about taking a line out of context and working from that line alone. People chose lines from a partner's poem in class. I hate the very idea of it. We did it often in class and it drove me nuts. My philosophy is simply: "No. It was not my idea. I'm not going to take a line/stanza/whatever and make it mine." Of course, I am not above borrowing ideas. I like reworking fairytales, or alluding to Shakespeare's or other great writer's works. That's one of the fun things a person can do with writing. However, stealing lines, I am against. That being said, I'm somewhat ashamed that I really liked how this poem came out. My instructor thought it was a predictable and cliché, but again, the very principle of this homework assignment goes against my core values. I have no idea whose line I stole, since it was a random line put up on the classroom board, but I am going to share it with you just because it's fun. Please take it with a flexible grain of salt. The line I worked from is the title of my "cheater" poem.
Rise and Fall From the Reservoir Walls
Rise and fall from the reservoir walls
Because the battle did break and
We did flee
Fright forgetting to fight
Until all was lost
In inky night
Knowing and showing our scars
To either the Almighty Above
Or the Unsightly Below.
