Face Up

Recite the words.
Say them over
And over
And over again.
Stutter and stumble
Across every syllable -
Through a land
Of embarrassment
Where the birdsong is
Callous laughter.

Then breathe deep
And say them.
Put out the noise
And speak the words
You've always struggled
To say.

Then open your eyes.

For a split second
It's her face smiling
Back at you from
Behind the sheeted glass.
Then blink,
And she's gone.

One day you'll have to
Face her.
For it's no use
Endlessly declaring your love
To a mirror.
