Chapter 5 "That's Why."
The next morning my mother decided that I should stay home and babysit my cousin Amanda; even though I told her that I was more focused on catching up on some sleep.
"Ok, so she can't have mustard because that makes kids horny. She can't have onions because I don't want her breath to smell just yet, and I don't want her to watch TV because her eyes are already getting messed up. There is a list in her bag and all the foods she's allergic to and words she needs to learn how to spell, and also how much am I paying you for this?"
I looked down at Amanda and back up at my aunt, "It's ten dollars an hour, same as last time Aunt Maria."
"Oh ok, Amanda come give me my goodbye kiss and I'll call you when I get in the car." Amanda walked over to give her mom her air kiss and walked back over to me. "Goodbye Daniella."
I waved and shut the door behind her, quickly running back to Amanda to make this day makeup for all the times her mother; didn't let her be a kid. "Manda, do you ice-cream?"
"Yes please, but wait Ella mom said I can't have ice-cream."
"It's ok, she won't mind for today. Just don't tell her."
Amanda nodded and we walked into the kitchen and got some ice-cream, then walked back to the living room to watch her favorite movie. Bolt. We sat there eating ice-cream and some sweet popcorn that I didn't even know we had, but ate it anyway. Until finally Amanda had a sugar rushes and passed out on the couch.
It would've been bad for me to stop the movie so I decided to zone out too, still waiting for my mom to bring that Subway she promised us. Finally at four she texted me that she was fifteen minutes away with the Subway, but two minutes later there was a knock on my door.
I got up from under the covers and walked over to the door in my ice-cream and lollipop pajamas shorts and my University of San Francisco sweatshirt. "Mom, how is that you texted me that you were fifteen minutes away, oh you aren't my mom."
"No, I'm not." Jerard replied.
"Um, what are you doing here?" I asked quickly pulling my shorts down to where they weren't so much stuck into my inner thigh. "I mean like, no yeah why are you here?"
"You forgot this in my car, and I didn't want to bring it to you last night. So I waited until morning, so here." I took my keychain from him and slid back on the pole next to the door.
"Thanks, I was wondering how I even got in my house this morning without this thing." He smiled and fixed the collar on his shirt, and looked back up at me.
"Yeah, well I'll see you around?"
"That sounded more like a question than a statement." I quickly replied, so that he wouldn't leave just yet.
"Yeah, well I may never see you again; so that's why it sounded more like a question."
"What do you mean?" He chuckled and shook his head, apparently not going to give me an answer. "Come on, it's a small town remember. Of course I'll see you around."
"No, my parents want me to move out to Arizona with them. They don't want me to be here when this investigation actually starts to get dug into."
I took a step closer to him and kept eye contact, "Why, are they scared?"
"No, my parents don't get scared, they scare."
I took another step closer to him and whispered, "Are you?"
He shook his head and slid his hand behind his neck, and sighed. "I have to go. Maybe one day when this blows off, we'll hang out."
I looked back inside my house and saw Amanda still sound asleep on the couch, and then I turned back to Jerard and grabbed his arm. "Maybe this is totally crazy of me; but why don't we just hang out right now?"
"What about your whole, 'my mom said I have to stay away from you'?"
I shyly grinned and moved myself away from the door and motioned for him to come in, "What my mother doesn't know won't kill her." I chuckled, "Unless you are the killer and you decide to kill her."
He smiled even though, what I said made no humorous sense and stepped inside.
"Come on, I'm just babysitting my cousin; but one thing I learned about her over the years is that if you feed her enough sugar she'll pass out." He nodded and just stood there with his looking around the house. "Do you want popcorn or candy or ice-cream?"
"I'm fine; I think after this visit I'll have enough sweets for a day."
"Ok." I had no clue what he meant, but it was obviously something more than implying he was going to have a fun time; since he started laughing.
"We can go to my room, if you're bored down here."
"Wow we just met and already an invitation to your room?"
"Not like that, I was just saying that because my room is where all the action happens; you know what you're right we should just stay down here." There was no possible way that I could say anything without having him turn it into something sexual.
He sat down on the couch next to me and I turned Bolt up, on minimum volume so that Amanda wouldn't wake up.
"You are revolting." I spat out.
Jerard turned to me and chuckled, "Why the change of heart?"
"I just got what you meant earlier with that 'sweets' comment. Like seriously?"
He started to silently laugh and slid closer to me on the couch, "You were the one who invited me into your house and then up to your room. I was just saying what my mind was telling me to say."
"Did you really think I was hoping to get into things with you?"
He chuckled and whispered in my ear, "Technically I would be inside of you, but hey however you want it; I can get it done."
"Ewww you are so vulgar, no wonder people are telling me to stay away from you." I scoffed pushing him away from me. "Hate to break it to you, but I would never have sex with you while my cousin is sleeping on my couch."
"But you would have sex with me if she wasn't?"
"Well, choose your words carefully because that's what it sounded like. But hey its ok I forgive, it's not your fault that you are attracted to me." He whispered that so heavily in my ear that my body tingled, or maybe that was just our hands touching each others.
"Yeah, because you are so irresistible."
"You said it, not me." The conversation quickly down poured after his phone buzzed and he started to continuously text back a person.
After ten minutes of just sitting there watching him and trying to watch the movie, I wanted to pull away the phone but I knew how that ended up last time. "Um do you want a drink?"
"Sure…." He mumbled off.
I got up from the couch and grabbed his arm to lead him into the kitchen, but his eyes were still focused on his phone. "Jerard, what is so important that you can't remove your eyes from the phone for a second. I mean I just put dishwasher detergent in your juice and you didn't even realize."
"Sorry, I had to take care of something, but I had to explain to my friend that I was busy."
"You aren't really busy, I mean it's like we're doing anything?"
He set his phone down and cornered me into the wall, "Sounded more like a question rather than a statement, don't you think so?"
I lowered my head down and tried to push him away but he pushed my arms back against the fridge, and tilted his head to move real close to my face. "You're moving pretty quick, don't you think?"
"I was always a quick person, unlike you who took ten minutes to realize that I was suggesting a sexual counter agreement with her."
I continued to stare at that stupid grin on his face and leaned in a little bit closer to just capture them, even though I knew this was a bad idea. But just the thought of kissing him, made me excited. Knowing that he was the typical bad boy just made it better.
"If I kissed you right now, what would you say?"
I shrugged and edged my face a little bit closer, "What if I kissed you?"
"Then I wouldn't be the only here that's moving a little bit fast."
I slid my face a little closer and closed my eyes, what did I have to lose. A kiss is just a kiss, that is all I have to tell myself and I'll get this over with. But instead of him waiting on me to do, he bonded our lips together, and I finally got to taste those stunning lips of his.
But then reality struck after he plowed my lips apart and stuck his tongue inside my mouth, making me want to free my hands from his grip and pull him closer to me. "Wait, where did you park your car?"
He quickly stopped kissing me and looked down with a confused expression, "On the other side of the street, why?"
Then I heard the keys jingle at the door, and remembered me asking my mom to get us Subway before she headed off to work. "That's why." I whispered.
