Watching Helen(R)

It was Bridget who told Harvey about Warnie, a friend of hers who was a trained CNA. Bridget was sure that Warnie could help Harvey's grandmother who was ailing and needed assistance when her grandson wasn't around.

Harvey nervously arrived at Johnny C's Diner at one in the afternoon to meet Warnie for the first time. He considered it an interview to see if the stranger might be a good fit for his grandmother. Bridget assured him it would be a win-win situation – Warnie was "coming off a bad relationship" and "needed a place to stay" and lonely Harvey was looking for someone to stay with his grandmother.

"Harvey Cavanaugh?"

Harvey glanced up from his Blackberry to see a young woman with a shag haircut standing at the edge of the booth. She looked to be in her mid-twenties with dancing deep blue eyes and a warm smile. Harvey sighed. She had to be attractive and young, another reminder of how much of a pathetic loser he really was.

"Warnie Warren?"

Harvey stood to greet her properly and realized she was an inch or two taller than him. But, at 5'6", that wasn't uncommon. He wondered if wearing his bow tie and suit was an overstatement for a place like Johnny C's. He knew she immediately took him for a geek with his prematurely receding hairline, wire rim glasses, and penny loafers.

She dressed like a college kid as she smiled politely and slid into the booth bench. "Thank you for taking the time to meet with me," she said.

"Thank you for taking the time to meet with me," Harvey replied with a serious tone as he returned to his seat.

The waitress came to the table to refresh Harvey's coffee.

"Would you like something to drink?" He asked Warnie.

"Iced tea would be fine," she told the waitress who nodded and handed Warnie a menu.

"So, Bridget tells me you've had home care experience?" Harvey cut right to the business at hand.

"Well, sort of," Warnie replied. "I have my CNA certificate from the state. I took the course at Blue County Community College. I worked at the nursing home for two years."

"But you're not currently employed?" Harvey asked.

She nodded affirmatively. "My boyfriend didn't want me working," she explained. "So I quit."

"And now?"

"I quit my boyfriend a few months ago," she said openly. "I'm living with my parents but that's not really working out."

"Why not?" He sounded suspicious. If she couldn't live with her parents how was she supposed to live with his grandmother?

"I'm twenty four," she said with a shrug of her shoulders. "It's just not….comfortable."

"I understand," He lied.

"So, Bridget says this could be a live-in type job?"

"That's what I'm thinking," Harvey confirmed.

"But you live there too?"

"Yes, I live there too," He acknowledged, sounding embarrassed. "But it's a big house."

The waitress returned with Warnie's iced tea. Harvey ordered a BLT club and Warnie ordered a Cesar's Salad.

"So, why are you looking for someone to stay with your grandmother?" Warnie asked.

"My grandmother is the kindest, most loving, giving person I know," he told Warnie once the waitress was gone. "I've never heard her say a negative thing about anyone. She never complains and she always smiles no matter what pain or discomfort she's experiencing."

Warnie nodded with understanding. "So, you're looking to give her some company?"

"I think you'd enjoy getting to know her," Harvey replied.

"I'm sure I would," Warnie agreed. "But why?"

"But why what?" he asked with confusion.

"But why do you need me?" She asked. "I mean, what's your story?"

"My story?" Harvey asked nervously, sucking in a deep breath.

"Yeah, like why me? Aren't there other family members or something?"

"No, there are no other family members," Harvey replied coldly.

"Oh." She looked at him with her own confusion.

Harvey sighed, realizing he was going to have to tell his secrets.

"Look, my grandmother basically raised me," he explained.

"Oh," Warnie said again. Then she waited for further explanation which Harvey obviously wasn't comfortable giving.

There was an awkward pause and Harvey stared down into his coffee.

"My mother had me out of wedlock," he said quietly.

"So where's your father?" Warnie asked.

"I never knew my father," Harvey replied.

"And your mother?" Warnie asked when she realized Harvey wasn't in any hurry to be forthcoming.

"My mother was drug addicted and couldn't really care for me," Harvey told her.

"I'm sorry," Warnie replied.

Harvey sucked in a deep breath. "So my grandmother took me in when I was eight. My mother died a few years later."

"That's really sad."

Harvey didn't like people feeling sorry for him. "My grandmother was already a widow so it was just her and me," he said.

"I see," Warnie said, studying this man she had just met sitting across from her. Why did he look so nervous and uncomfortable?

"My grandmother is very dear to me," Harvey remarked. "She's starting to slow down and she's getting…..absent-minded, so I'm not comfortable leaving her on her own."

"So you're looking for someone to stay with her."

"Do you like music?" Harvey asked.

"Sure," Warnie replied. "But what does that have to do with anything?"

"Grandma played the piano and she loves to sing," he explained proudly. "She was a music teacher and she gave private piano lessons at the house. She developed throat problems and can't sing well anymore but she never lost her enthusiasm."

"That's great," Warnie said cheerfully.

"You wouldn't have to do all that much other than keep an eye on her and assist her with her activities," Harvey told her. "She likes to cook and bake and work in her garden."

"That sounds fine," Warnie replied cheerfully.

"She likes to tell stories," Harvey continued fondly. "I hope you're patient with that sort of stuff."

"Not a problem," Warnie beamed.

"I have memories of her letting me stay up past my bedtime so that she could tell me bedtime stories," Harvey recalled, seemingly deep in nostalgic thought. "But generally she's a quiet, steady, faithful woman with a warm personality and a helpful nature."

"Sounds good," Warnie let him know. To her, it sounded like an easy gig.

"So, you wouldn't mind moving in and being a health aide?" Harvey asked, finally looking at her again.

"If you'll have me," Warnie smiled.

Harvey stared at her as if she had said something inappropriate. He almost looked like he was blushing.

"In the house," she added, although she wasn't sure why she had to clarify what she meant.

"You wouldn't mind?" Harvey asked, almost like he couldn't believe she was agreeing to his proposal.

"I'm taking some on line courses but I can do that at night when she's in bed," Warnie remarked.

"Of course."

The waitress arrived with the food and the awkward looking Harvey waited until she was gone before continuing the conversation.

"So, you're okay with this?" He asked.

Warnie laughed. "Why do you think I came here to meet with you?" She smiled. "Bridget told me what you wanted. Yes, of course I'm okay with this."

"Oh. Okay." He still looked surprised and uncertain.

"When would I start?" Warnie wondered.

"When could you start?"

"Whenever you need me," she answered.

Harvey looked embarrassed. "I kind of need you now," he admitted nervously.

"I'm ready whenever you are," she said good-naturedly.

"Okay," he said, eating his food almost distractedly.

"So," Warnie said after a few quiet moments. "What do we do now?"

Why did this guy seem so fidgety and anxious?

"When should I move in?" She specified.

"Why don't I show you the house first?" he suggested. "You can meet my grandmother."

"That sounds like a good plan," Warnie agreed.

"But let's not tell her you're moving in, though," he said.

"Won't it be kind of obvious?" She asked.

"I mean don't tell her you're moving in to watch after her," he clarified.

"Well, why am I moving in then?" She wondered.

"As a favor to Bridget," Harvey answered, after giving it thought for a moment. "You need a place to stay."

"That's true, sadly," she sighed.

"What's going on at home, exactly?" He asked with a frown. "If you don't mind me asking," he added diplomatically.

"My parents aren't exactly happy with me," Warnie replied. "I dropped out of college, they hated the guy I was with, and now I'm back home after a failed and abusive relationship with not much to show for myself. They treat me like I'm seven. I just need to get out of there. I love my parents, but they're driving me crazy."

He stared blankly at her for a moment, as if he really couldn't comprehend what she had just told him. Figures she'd be living with a guy. He never had a girl live with him. But what did she mean by abusive?

"Hopefully my grandmother won't be that bad," he mumbled.

"What's her name?" Warnie asked with genuine interest.

"Helen," Harvey responded. "I think you'll like her."

"Oh, I'm sure I will," Warnie said with confidence.

"I work long hours with lots of travelling around the state and that's why I need a presence at the house with my grandmother," Harvey informed her.

"What do you do?" Warnie asked.

"What do you mean?" He asked with confusion.

"For a job," She said. Why was this guy so socially inept?

"I work for the state housing authority and spend a lot of time travelling around the state checking on various buildings, complexes, and residences," he explained. "It's a stupid job but somebody's got to do it."

She nodded and there wasn't much more conversation as they finished their meal.

Warnie wondered why Harvey dressed so conservatively and why he appeared to be so nervous. Was it her? Was it something to do with his grandmother?

When they were done eating, Harvey paid the bill and Warnie walked outside to grab some fresh air.

"Would you have a few minutes now to see the house and meet my grandmother?" Harvey asked when he joined her outside.

"Now?" Warnie asked with surprise.

"I have some free time," Harvey replied with a shrug. "If you wouldn't mind?"

He wanted to get this over with and not have to go through the awkwardness of meeting her all over again.

"Oh, sure, okay," Warnie replied, a bit surprised by the unexpected invitation.

"We can leave your car here and come back for it after," Harvey suggested. "If you wouldn't mind."

She could tell this guy was having a hard time with all of this.

"Okay," Warnie agreed with a smile, hoping to calm him.

"Bridget knows me well," Harvey blurted out, as if he had to reassure her that he wasn't a mass murderer psycho or something.

"Oh, I know," Warnie replied with a smile.

"Bridget has nothing but nice things to say about you," Harvey revealed as they walked toward his car.

"Was Bridget your girlfriend?" Warnie asked.

Harvey nearly stumbled over his own two feet. "A girl like Bridget would never go out with a guy like me," he sighed sadly in response to her question as he opened the passenger door to his nondescript sedan.

Warnie climbed into the car and glanced back at him. "What do you mean?"

Harvey didn't answer as he closed the door and walked around to his side of the vehicle.

"Bridget's is my friend's girlfriend," he said.

"Oh, you know Roger?" Warnie asked with approval.

"We went to school together," Harvey replied as he slipped into the driver's seat.

There was no reason to explain that Roger was the only friend he had in his life, the only guy who treated him with respect and kindness, even back when they were growing up as neighbors and classmates.

Instead, Harvey drove them the few blocks to his grandmother's house without saying much. The house had been in the family for generations, a huge three story Victorian in the Hilltop section of town. It was much too big for just Harvey and his grandmother but she had been born and raised in the house and she couldn't part with it. Harvey remembered feeling lost in the huge house as a kid but as he grew older, he valued and appreciated the privacy and space it offered.

The house consisted of a large old fashioned kitchen and pantry, a half-bath, a dining room, a living room, a library, and a study on the first floor, five bedrooms and a large bathroom on the second floor, and a playroom and two smaller rooms and another bath on the third floor, plus a half attic. There was a wrap around porch on the front of the house, and a screened in back porch plus a second floor balcony off the second floor master bedroom used by Grandma.

"Wow!" Warnie said as she got out of the car in front of the three bay garage. "You and your grandmother live her all by yourselves?"

"Sadly," he acknowledged.

Harvey led her around to the front of the house and let her in the front door, through the small vestibule that led to the front hall and the wrap around stairs leading to the second floor.

"Grandmother?" Harvey called out. "I brought somebody to see you!"

He motioned for Warnie to follow him into the living room.

"Oh! Who!?" Warnie heard Grandma call as she waddled into the room from the kitchen.

"Grandma, this is Warnie," Harvey said politely. "Warnie, this is my grandmother, Helen."

"It's a pleasure to meet you," Warnie said warmly.

"Well, hello there young lady," Grandma replied pleasantly, accepting Warnie's hand in hers.

Grandma looked fragile and small to Harvey, especially now that he saw her standing to the young, lanky and erect Warnie. Grandma looked hunched and shrunk with a humbled appearance but a spirited disposition. Her smile was modest with closed lips although occasionally Harvey would see a glimpse of her teeth that were glossy and silvered with age. Her brown eyes shined behind her wire-rimmed glasses. Her gray white hair was cut short and it was noticeably thinning in recent years. Her skin was creased and furrowed with an arbitrary pattern of age spots. Her hands were fragile and bony with skin that was wrinkled and almost like tissue paper.

"Would you care to sit, dear?" Grandma asked and Harvey knew that meant that Grandma needed to sit.

"Yes, of course," Warnie said, taking a seat on the couch next to Harvey's grandmother while Harvey sat in one of the easy chairs, looking stoic and official-like.

"I'm sorry, what did you say your name was again?" Grandma asked.

"Warnie," she answered.

"Warnie," she said again.

"My, that's a strange name!" Grandma exclaimed.

"I know!" Warnie laughed easily. "My mother got it from some movie."

"What does it mean exactly?" Grandma wondered.

"I looked it up once," Warnie replied. 'It means to express yourself by following the divine law of love."

"Really?" Harvey asked with surprise and interest.

"To have great persistence," Warnie continued. "To be charming, magnetic and intuitive."

"Wow," Harvey muttered, looking almost transfixed by her very presence.

"To have spirituality which is the key to success," Warnie said. "To be bold, independent, inquisitive and interested. To know what you want and why you want it. To be a clear thinker. To be intuitive. To have inspired wisdom combined with inherited analytical ability. To investigate the unknown. To find the purpose and meaning of life."

She looked at the two of them and proudly smiled with confidence.

"Well, Harvey, you certainly found yourself a winner!" Grandma said with amusement.

"Uh, Warnie isn't my girlfriend, Grandmother," Harvey said, appearing stricken with horror and embarrassment.

"She's not?" Grandma frowned. She looked at Warnie. "Then who are you?"

Warnie looked at Harvey for direction.

"She's a friend of Bridget's, Gram," Harvey said, sounding factual.

"Who's Bridget?" Grandma asked, apparently confused.

"You know, Roger's girlfriend," Harvey replied with concern.

"Roger Clarke?"

"Yes, Grandmother," Harvey said with some annoyance.

Grandma seemed to be thinking about if she knew Bridget (which she did, of course).

"So, anyway, Warnie is going to be staying with us for a while," Harvey told his grandmother, sounding uncertain yet hopeful.

"She is?" Grandma asked with surprise.

"Yes," Harvey replied. "She's…between places."

"Well, why doesn't she stay with Barbara?" Grandma asked.

"Bridget, Grandma," Harvey said calmly. "Because we have more room."

Warnie saw how awkward and uncomfortable Harvey was with all of this and she wondered why. Wasn't this his idea? Wasn't he okay with all of this?

"Oh, okay, fine then, dear," Grandma said, apparently putting the matter to rest.

"Thanks, Grandma," Harvey said with relief.

"I look forward to spending time with you, Helen," Warnie said cheerfully.

"Yes, dear," Grandma replied with a gracious smile. "I'm sure you do."

"Well, I need to be getting back to work," Harvey quickly announced, abruptly standing. "Warnie, I'll take you back to your car."

"Okay," Warnie agreed, standing as well, taken aback by Harvey's quick conclusion to the meeting. "It was lovely to meet you, Helen.

She took Harvey's grandmother's hand in hers.

"We'll be seeing a lot more of each other soon, I'm sure," Helen replied.

Harvey escorted Warnie out of the house and back to the car.

"Everything okay?" Warnie asked, peering at Harvey

"Everything's fine," he replied. "I think this will work out okay."

"I do too," Warnie said as she got into the car.

But truth be told, Harvey was scared to death about everything. Especially Warnie!

Warnie moved into the big house that weekend. She didn't have that much stuff – three or four suitcases of clothes, some dress bags, a couple boxes of books, her computer, and some photographs – and Roger and Harvey helped her move into the room across the hall from Helen's.

Warnie's father looked on with disapproval as Harvey and Roger dragged Warnie's stuff out of the house. Warnie explained the circumstances of her departure but her Dad didn't appear sold on the situation and he kept giving Harvey penetrating looks.

Harvey barely said a word but Roger was full of good cheer and enthusiasm about Warnie moving into Harvey's house. Warnie wished Harvey could be that enthusiastic about anything.

"Where's your room?" Warnie asked Harvey when they were done dragging her stuff into her new room.

"I'm down at the end of the hall so don't worry, there's plenty of distance between us," he replied and Warnie gave him a funny look while Roger just shook his head.

It didn't take Warnie long to grow accustomed to the house and to fit into the routine. In the morning before Harvey left for work, he'd see Warnie and his grandmother sitting together at the breakfast table and in the evening when he came home they'd often be in the kitchen again, preparing supper.

As the weeks went by, Harvey heard Warnie tell all sorts of stories to his grandmother with excitement and good humor. They got along well and Grandma seemed a bit more alert since Warnie's arrival. Grandma told Warnie all her stories too, played the piano again for the first time in years, worked diligently in the garden almost every day, and her spirits were greatly lifted. There was better color in her cheeks and she seemed less forgetful although she occasionally called Warnie Wanda or Wilma or Marlene but Warnie didn't seem to be offended or bothered by it.

Harvey was relieved to have somebody watching over his grandmother. He was less stressed and nervous worrying about her when he was gone and it was certainly welcomingly different to have a third person in that big old house for the first time in years.

At the same time, however, Harvey acted awkward and uncomfortable around Warnie. He didn't talk to her that much and it was almost as if he didn't know how to act having a woman living in the house. Warnie wasn't sure if he was shy, gay, or just didn't like her but she decided not to worry about it. Her primary duty was to Harvey's grandmother and not to him.

Harvey seemed to be focused on his grandmother's wellbeing and he was apparently obsessed with his job as far as Warnie could tell so she assumed he hadn't spent a lot of time cultivating his personal or social life. Roger and Bridget appeared to be Harvey's only real friends and he worked independently and alone so he obviously didn't get a lot of opportunity to interact with coworkers on the job. He seemed like a sad and lonely person to Warnie but she enjoyed having him around and she could see how devoted he was to his grandmother and how much Helen loved him.

Even though Warnie's presence kept Harvey reserved, professional, and almost standoffish, was a nice having her in the house. She was warm, personable and friendly person and he enjoyed seeing her warm smile every day. Grandma obviously adored her. They had become fast and steady friends and it was cute seeing his Grandmother acting almost like a school girl with Warnie.

Grandma's hearing had been getting steadily worse for a while and it was Warnie who got her to go to the doctor and get hearing aids. Now Gram could hear the click of the clock in the kitchen and she was much quicker to crack a joke or laugh at something Warnie or Harvey said now that she could hear them.

Warnie also got Gram to get out more, to Johnny C's for lunch or over to Donovan's Department Store in Greenville for "a little girls shopping" as Grandma put it. Warnie spent every evening watching Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy! With Grandma, playing along and laughing when they were wrong. She also watched the Red Sox with Grandma even though they weren't having a very good season.

There was a time not so long ago that Harvey was afraid to leave his grandmother because he wasn't sure what he would find when he returned. Would she have fallen and hurt herself? Taken a walk and forgotten where she had gone? But now with Warnie around 24/7, there was a whole new attitude and feeling in the house. Not only was Harvey more relaxed, but Gram was happier than he had seen her in a long time. Warnie was good for her and suddenly the big old house didn't feel so empty anymore.

Harvey was starting to realize that Warnie was good for him too. He hadn't had a successful relationship since college. Because his grandmother was his only priority and his first commitment, the few relationships he tried eventually hit a wall as he always put his grandmother first and most women saw him as a 'grandma's boy'. His sexuality had been questioned more than once but the truth was that Harvey was mostly a shy and, insecure self-conscious guy who never developed the social skills or confidence to embark on successful romances.

His grandmother protected him, watched after him, and basically became the surrogate for everything in his life and now, at thirty-three, Harvey often felt as though life had passed him by and that he was always going to be the grandma's boy. But now Harvey was starting to get used to the idea of Warnie being around and he was starting to loosen up some although he remained cautious and guarded.

One night, Harvey came up the stairs to go to bed. Warnie had already retired to her room but Grandma called to her grandson from her bed.

"Yes, Grandma?" Harvey said, sticking his head into the door.

"Thank you for bringing Warnie here to watch over me," she said.

"She needed a place to stay, Grandma," Harvey said, sticking to his original story.

"I may be old but I'm not stupid, Harvey," his grandmother replied. "You wanted someone to be here with me and you certainly made a good choice."

"Well, thanks," Harvey said sheepishly.

"I'll treasure every moment of this," Grandma said. "So thank you."

"You're welcome," he replied, smiling and winking.

"And what about you, Harvey?" His grandmother wanted to know.

"What about me, Gram?" Harvey replied with confusion.

"She's a good looking girl," Grandma smiled knowingly.

"Yes she is," Harvey acknowledged before continuing down the hall to his room.

Warnie was the first person who lived with us since Harvey's mother died. At first, he only saw her as his grandmother's aide and as a housemate but now he was beginning to feel more attracted to the younger woman. He supposed it was only natural living under the same room and sharing the same woman (his grandmother). Harvey started getting better at sharing conversations over meals. He'd join Warnie watching television in the evening, even after his grandmother had retired for the night.

It didn't take Harvey long to discover that Warnie a fun and interesting person. But what attracted him to her the most was that she had no expectations and that she was genuinely happy being in the house. She didn't seem to be bothered by or turned off by Harvey's presence. She didn't make judgmental comments about him and she didn't seem frightened or disgusted by him either.

Harvey didn't feel quite so lonely and alone anymore, the typecast bachelor living with his grandmother even though he had no allusions about some sort of romance with Warnie. But she made him smile and she got him to laugh which was something new too. He looked forward to getting home at night just to see Warnie and he felt sad in the morning when he had to leave for work.

Sometimes, it almost felt like he and Warnie were a couple (even though he knew they weren't), especially when they were with his grandmother. Warnie would hold her hand and they looked so sweet together. Sometimes the three of them would just sit together on the living room couch without saying a word.

"You don't seem to be bitter," Warnie observed one night after she had put Grandma to bed.

"What do you mean?" Harvey asked with surprise as they sat in the living room watching one of the evening cable talk shows.

"I would think with the life you had, you might be bitter," Warnie said. "No father, a mother who died young and tragically."

"I used to feel sorry for myself sometimes," Harvey admitted with unusual candor. "But my grandmother taught me to be grateful just by her example. She could have been bitter and resentful too but she accepted what she was given and what was taken and she lived her life the best way she could with a smile on her face."

"I suppose that is a good attitude to have," Warnie remarked.

"My grandmother used to tell me to close my eyes when I was having a hard day or something in my life wasn't going well," Harvey revealed. "She'd say, 'Take a deep breath and slowly let it out. Now see what it feels like to be alive? Do you feel your heart beating? Do you feel your lungs breathing in and out? Do you feel your arms, legs, abdomen, head, and face? Now take another deep breath and smile in gratitude as you exhale. That's the feeling of Life in all of us. The secret to opening the gift of Life is simply to see what it feels like to be alive. Feel Life as often as you can. It's always feeling you.'"

Harvey seemed to be deep in thought.

"That's a good philosophy to have," Warnie said with a smile.

Harvey looked at her and he wanted to sigh. She was a sweet girl but she was only 24, nearly ten years younger than him and he knew it would be foolish to try to take it any further with her. He would hate to ruin it for his grandmother and he anticipated that he would reject his advances anyway given his previous track record.

"What about you?" He dared to ask.

"Huh?" She asked, surprised by the question.

"Are you bitter?"

"About what?"

"Your previous relationship, maybe?" He guessed.

"I'm pissed off at myself for being such an asshole," she readily confessed. "Everybody warned me the guy was strange and all wrong for me but I didn't want to listen to anybody so I did it my way and nearly got my jaw broken one night."

"He hit you!?" Harvey asked with surprise.

She looked away with shame. "I'd rather not talk about it, Harvey." Then she glanced back at him. "All I can say is that this arrangement is the best thing that's ever happened to me."

Warnie hadn't mentioned anybody else in her life and the only time she left the house alone was to go see her parents but as lonely as Harvey felt he was hesitant (and even afraid) to openly flirt with Warnie. If he put the moves on her and things didn't work out, where would that leave his grandmother who was obviously quite fond of Warnie now?

Strange how he finally had a woman living in his house yet Harvey still felt as lonely as ever.

It was one of those long and endless days with problematic residents and managers that left Harvey feeling discouraged about his job and his lot in life. It didn't help that he was clear on the other side of the state and had to drive home in an endless downpour in the dark which only added to the dreary defeat he was feeling about all aspects of his life.

Harvey's grandmother had always been his saving grace and his port in any storm but now that he was getting older and life was passing him by, he wondered if he would ever break out of his loneliness.

Bridget and Roger had been over to dinner a few times and while the visits were nice it only made Harvey feel all the more pathetic, especially when Roger would pull him aside and rib him about Warnie.

"So, have you two slept together yet?" He'd tease. "Have you pulled the shower curtain open on her yet?"

The joking only made Harvey feel all the more like the loser he was.

The rain splashed on the windshield as he drove. He couldn't wait for a nice warm shower and the softness of his warm yet perpetually empty bed. It was getting late so he stopped to get something to eat and he called Warnie to tell her not to have Gram wait up for him. Her voice sounded so warm and comforting on the phone and it almost felt like he was calling his lover instead of his grandmother's aide.

The house was dark when Harvey finally arrived home. It was till raining as he ran from the car to the back door and quietly slipped into the house. He saw the flashing of the television from the living room and he stepped inside to see Warnie's sweet form stretched out on the couch. He couldn't tell if she was awake but he was caught by the awe of her body. Her breasts were heaving lightly as she breathed, her skin softly glowing, her hair shining. She was quite a pretty young woman and the flickering of the light from the television cast an almost dreamlike aurora around her.

For some reason, Harvey reached down and caressed her cheek which was very unlike him but Warnie was sleeping soundly and he couldn't resist the temptation. She moaned softly from his touch which sent a pulse through him. It had been a long time since he felt a woman or had one this close.

Lingering above her for a moment, Harvey looked down at her lovely form as she slumbered. Her shirt had ridden up revealing her smooth flat belly. He took a deep slow breath, afraid to disturb the sleeping angel but his eyes never left her and before he knew what he was doing, Harvey found himself tracing his finger along her legs, his hand trailing lightly upon her silk skin. Her shorts had hiked up on her thighs and he peered at her meaty hip.
It was as if he was caught in a spell. Suddenly, Harvey couldn't resist her. All these many months (years, actually) of lonely frustration had overloaded his sense of appropriateness. He knelt down beside the couch and placed a kiss upon Warnie's exposed belly, his tongue tracing lightly over her belly as her scent filled his nostrils and his hand slowly ran up and down her shapely legs.
He froze when he felt her shifting on the couch, her legs opening. Harvey glanced at her face and saw that her eyes were still closed. He let his right hand trace her inner thighs, slipping it just under her cotton white shorts and dreaming about her hidden treasure waiting to be discovered. A soft moan escaped her lips and Harvey froze again. Had he crossed the line? Would she scream if she opened her eyes and saw him being perverted? What would she tell his grandmother? He waited until she settled again, his hand resting high on her inner thigh.

Harvey was glad that Warnie wore baggy shorts as his hand slid higher on her hip, his fingers brushing near her smooth hairy wet treasure and that's when he suspected she was faking her sleep and was welcoming his advances so he went along with her masquerade, happy to play the game without having to face the awkwardness of having to ask for her permission or approval.
Letting his now damp finger trail along the inner part of her thigh, Harvey slid his hand out of her shorts while he continued to watch her. Her breasts were heaving and her smooth tummy invited kisses but he wanted to taste the sweetness of her flower. He knew it was wrong and perverted, but his loneliness and horniness, his almost desperate desire to experience sex after such a long and painful drought, had taken command of his good senses.

Leaning down, Harvey gently undid her shorts and then slowly he unzipped them to discover that she wasn't wearing panties. Leaving her shorts open, Harvey leaned down and placed a kiss just above the hairy triangle that led to her greater treasures.
Warnie moaned and her hips leaned towards Harvey's mouth. Her silence was adding to the dreamlike state of the situation and he knew that he had gone too far to turn back now so he tugged at her shorts and she lifted her hips to release them. Harvey tossed them to the side and taking her leg, he opened her up slowly, kissing up her thigh, her scent driving him wild.
Harvey's right hand traced up her inner left thigh and then across her pubic bone, his fingers teasing her opening, the wetness growing as he slowly spread her pussy lips. Leaning in, he gave a lick and they both moaned simultaneously. The throbbing between Harvey's legs was causing him pain but he wasn't sure if he should break that barrier so he let his tongue probe deeper into her tightness. Her hips thrusted to his mouth and her moans grew louder but Harvey knew that Gram would never hear. He let his finger slip into her heat, her wetness tantalizing him as his tongue tasted her.
Warnie's eyes were still closed but her body arched to Harvey's mouth, begging for more. He began sucking her engorged bud and she cried out in pleasure. Her sudden release was quick and wet, the sweetness flooding his taste buds as her wave finally began to subside. Slowly, Harvey withdrew his fingers as he heard a whimper of protest. He brought his slick fingers to his mouth and savored her taste. Warnie's breathing was heavy and labored and when Harvey looked at her face again he did a double take when he realized that her eyes were open, meeting his gaze.
Harvey's heart skipped a beat as he fearfully waited for her reaction. Would she freak out? Scream? Hit him? Warnie sat up slowly, her head level with Harvey's waist as she looked at him, both apparently afraid to speak. Harvey nodded his approval when she reached her arms out and undid his belt, unsnapping his trousers and unzipping the fly, letting his pants fall to the floor.

Harvey stepped out of them and kicked off his penny loafers while Warnie pulled down his boxers, revealing his naked penis beneath. A deep sigh of excitement escaped him as her nails trailed down his thighs, her warm breath teasing him with the possibility of her lips on him.

As insecure and unsure as Harvey was, he was never one for turning down sexual opportunities on the rare occasions when they arose. If Warnie wasn't going to run screaming from the room, he was willing to see how far this little night game might go, happy for her willingness to let it unfold this far.
Warnie's fingers grasped Harvey gently around his shaft and he could feel the swelling and the numbing throb that ached for release. Her hands moved delicately over his growing manhood, her stroke gentle and his tip tingled and twitched in anticipation. Licking her lips, Warnie looked up at him, apparently asking for permission.
Surfing on disbelief and hopeful anticipation, Harvey could only nod as her tongue flicked his sensitive tip. The warmth was quickly replaced with the cool air as her mouth moved from the tip and her hands began to stroke. Lifting his hardness up, she lowered her tongue and stroked up the shaft, her lips teasing him unmercifully. A soft groan escaped the back of Harvey's throat as she slowly slid his throbbing manhood into her mouth that was so warm and wet, her tongue playing along the shaft as she took him deeper with each stroke.
Her hands grasped him, pumping with each stroke of her mouth, pushing him closer to the edge. Her tongue lapped at the edges of the tip, teasing forth Harvey's desire and lust. Her mouth finally expertly claimed him and he felt the tingle of sensation sweeping towards her as he erupted rather unexpectedly, but it had been a long time and he was overly excited. Her mouth suckled each drop from him and, panting, Harvey pulled himself from her mouth and he sat on the couch as she looked at him with a satisfied smirk on her face.

Moving towards him, Warnie sat on his lap and he smiled as the swelling between his legs returned in anticipation, rubbing its way along her ass atop it. Leaning towards her, Harvey placed a soft kiss on her forehead, his hand resting lightly on the curve of her jaw and then, tilting her toward him, he covered her mouth with his. The kiss was electrifying and their bodies re-ignited with desire. With a final lustful nip, he broke the kiss and scooped her panting into his arms as he stood and kissed her again before whispering into her ear.
"Would you like to go to my room?"

It was the first words exchanged between them since Harvey came home.
"Yes," she answered softly.

He carried her up the stairs, both of them bottomless. He tiptoed past Gram's room and into his at the end of the hall, plenty far away enough not to be concerned about waking her up.

"This is not why I asked you to move in," Harvey said quietly once they were in his room, the door closed, as he placed her on top of his bed. A night light by the corner illuminated the room in a soft glow.

"I know," she said as she pulled off her shirt to reveal her lovely breasts.

Harvey removed his shirt and socks and now that they were both naked, he joined her on the bed.

"How long were you sleeping?" He asked.

"I heard you come in," she smirked.

"You little mix," he grinned. "You wanted me to do that?"

"For a long time," she admitted, rolling over and burying her face in the pillow with embarrassment. "Am I a slut?"

"No, of course not," Harvey said, moving toward her and kissing her shoulder.

"I've always been shy," she explained.

"Me too." He stated the obvious.

His hips were in alignment with hers and his growing erection fit snugly between the cheeks of her ass. A subtle nudge from her hips allowed his cock to fall within the warm crevice close to her entrance.

"It really did feel like a dream though," she giggled. "I had been asleep before you came in."
Harvey adjusted to her and she to him, allowing a clear entry from behind as he reached across her front and massaged her breasts with playful squeezes and soon his fingers were rubbing her hardening nipples.
Warnie stretched and accepted his advances, allowing her wet pussy lips to pull his hard cock inside of her. Harvey felt himself twitching inside as his hand gripped her breasts and his breaths tickled her ear. He heard her sigh with contentment as she wiggled to get a better angle for him as she entered her vagina from behind.
They relaxed into a slow rhythm and as Harvey pushed inward, she moved her hips, and when he pulled outward, she moved again too. The slow push and pull stimulated their desires with every penetration and Harvey felt her become wetter in response to his hardness rubbing against her warm and squirmy insides. His cock head increased her erotic state and the wetness of her arousal intensified his efforts. Warnie's breathing turned to soft moans and his grip on her breast tightened.

She rolled over, forcing him out of her as she lay on her back but Harvey buried his mouth on her breast, lapping at her nipple as his mouth squeezed and sucked. Grabbing at her other breast, Harvey made the switch and continued his strong suckling. Warnie arched her hips and Havey responded by teasing her clit with his fingers while sucking on her breasts.
Nearing an orgasm, Harvey heard Warnie moan but he wanted to bring her to orgasm with his dick so he rolled on top of her and entered her again with a deep penetration while tickling her swollen clit with his finger. Harvey watched her face as joy took over her expression. Her hips rose to greet his, allowing him to slide in deeper. The sensation of his balls hitting her ass sent her into an orgasm and he pushed her legs up and out as he penetrated her as deeply as possible.

Warnie watched his cock going in and out of her pussy and Harvey smiled at her expression and he kissed her hard and passionately. She arched upward, pulling him in deeper as they both let go of any inhibitions and shyness as moans escaped her throat and her body twisted as he continued stroking her swollen clit with his finger.

"Please!" Warnie moaned. "Fuck me."

Harvey sat back on his feet, his knees bent in front of him, his erection standing tall. Warnie sat up and pushed him back before leaping onto his lap, pushing her ass up and towards him. He gripped her hip bones and force fed his cock into her pussy which caused her to scream out in pleasure. They both orgasmed together as she spasmed on top of him as his spurts shot into her.

When it was over, Warnie fell over into the tangle of sheets, blankets, and Harvey nestled beside her while they both tried to catch their breaths.

"You're really good," Warnie marveled.

"Really?" He asked hopefully.

"I haven't felt that satisfied in a real long time," she assured him. "Thank you."

"I'm glad," he said happily, cuddling her.

They fell asleep, wrapped together in one mangled twist of bodies.

Harvey and Warnie understandably overslept and that's why Gram was opening Harvey's bedroom door the next morning.

"Have you seen Warnie?" She asked.

Luckily, they had covered themselves during the night so Gram didn't get an unexpected eye full.

"I'm right here, Helen," Warnie replied before Harvey could stop her, fearing Gram might be offended or shocked.

"Oh, so you are, dear," Helen said calmly. Actually, she was smiling. "So I see my little plan actually worked."

"Your little plan?" Harvey frowned with confusion.

"Of course," Gram smirked. "I knew getting a woman in the house was the first step."

"Gram, I'm the one who got Warnie into the house," Harvey pointed out.

"Yes, but I'm the one who let her stay," Gram replied with a smile. "I'll be waiting for breakfast downstairs. Don't lollygag. You make love on your time, not mine."

She closed the door and Warnie ducked her head out from under the covers and she looked at Harvey. They both burst out in laughter.

"Does this mean we're officially a couple now?" Warnie teased.

"According to Grandmother," Harvey acknowledged with a smile, but then he bit his lip and looked at her nervously. "Are we?" He asked quietly.

"I think so," Warnie replied with a smile. "We have Gram on our side."

Harvey fell back on the bed and laughed at the situation. "I don't know who is responsible for our relationship," he admitted. "Me for asking you to be a house aide for Gram, or Gram for allowing you to move in."

"Or how bout me for pretending I was asleep on the couch!?" Warnie giggled.

"Frankly, I don't care," Harvey announced, grabbing the naked Warnie and pulling her close to him. "My loneliness is finally over and Gram has somebody who cares about her."

"And I have someone who cares about me," Warnie smiled happily. "Watching Helen was the best thing that ever happened to me."
