"You're going to die today, pretty lady," the man in a voice that might as well have been a growl. His brown eyes were black in the dim light of the street.
The girl struggled. She fought and screamed for what seemed like ages. The man only tightened his grip on her throat with a grin. She took one last raspy breath and crumpled to the ground.
The man was about to shove her into a nearby garbage can when he became aware of another being's presence. He turned slowly and came face to face with a young woman in a jet black, floor length gown. She had a dark grey clutch in her hand. Her eyes were dark, dark red, the color of fresh blood. Her hair was pure white and fell to her ankles.
"Hello, Jeremy," she said slowly, letting her words sink in one by one. "I am death." Seeing his look of surprise, she snorted. "What, did you expect a scythe and a cloak? I could look that way, if I so chose to. But I prefer this look, much more updated, don't you think?"
Jeremy only blinked. "Death? You ain't death."
Death merely shook her head. "I don't need to prove anything to you, mortal. I'm here for Amelia."
"Who's that?" Jeremy asked.
"Amelia Jane Sanders," Death offered. "The girl you just murdered?"
"Oh, that's her name, I'd gone and forgotten," Jeremy said sheepishly.
Death rolled her demonic eyes. "I'm not here for you. Yet. But trust me, Jeremy Jonathan Lawrence, your time is coming soon."
She held out her hand to the dead girl. A kind, purple ball rose out of her chest with a sound kind of like a sigh of relief. Death held the poor girls soul in her hand for a moment, admiring it before sticking it in her handbag.
"Until we meet again, Jeremy." She met his eyes one last time with a nearly pitiful glare. "You know, I really hate murders." And then she was gone.
1 year later
Jeremy Lawrence moved to Austin, Texas in an attempt to hide from what he had done. He got an apartment downtown, and lived a fairly normal life. During the day, at least.
At night, dreams of the girl with the red eyes and white hair haunted him. That last look she had given him invaded his mind. Her last words to him stung like poison. I really hate murders…
The worst part were the pictures of Amelia that flashed through his mind every time he thought of that night. It was more like a video of things he had never seen before, her laughing and smiling with a group of friends at school or her sitting at home with her twin sister and parents.
Not a week after he moved, Jeremy was walking to his first job interview when he saw something that made his heart stop. Death stood across the street, a dazzling smile on her ruby red lips. She grinned and mouthed "It's time".
That's when Jeremy felt a searing pain start in his lower back and continue up to his head and down to his toes. It brought him to his knees, clutching his chest. He had never felt such pain in his life. He looked to the skies before everything went black and saw Death hovering above him in the long, black dress, arm raised.
"I told you I would see you again," she muttered.
The last thing Jeremy saw before Death took him was a black wisp of smoke just above his chest.
Death laughed at the pathetic, black soul in her arms. "Have fun in Hell," she whispered before dropping the soul to the ground and crushing it with her heel.
A/N Well, this is one way to start off my journey here on Fiction Press, now isn't it? This story is fairly intense for my tastes and, to be honest, it's a little older than most of my stories will be. Reviews are much appreciated. Critiques are encouraged. Just please, PLEASE, be fair with your reviews. If you don't like it, tell me why. Don't just say that it sucks and I don't deserve to be on this website. Honestly, that doesn't do anything to better me as a writer.
Also, if I'm going to have an account, I feel like I should have something to call my readers. On Youtube the really famous (and not-so-famous) people all call their viewers something (for example, Sinuyan calls himself "Sinu" and everyone who subscribes to him his "Yans" thus creating "Sinuyan"), so I thought, why not me? What do you guys think about this? PM or review and let me know!
