The Candle and the Lighter
You are like a candle and I am the lighter. You pick me up when you need a spark and leave me lying on the counter while you dance and shine. You draw everyone's eyes to you. You are blinding, beautiful, infinite. Only you are not. You are dangerous. You come with an expiry date. Soon someone gets burnt. You outlive your usefulness. You splutter, flicker and fade. You die. And when you do, I will be here, where you left me, and I will light you up again. It's what I do.
In all honesty, I would rather be me than you. I am not noticed. I am not appreciated. I am not beautiful. I will never feel infinite. I will never burn anyone. I will never splutter, flicker and fade. I will always be there, I will always light you up when you die down. It is what I do. I do it well.
