The Horrors of Plastic

The hidden enemy of mankind is one of the causes of cancer and diseases. This seemly innocent material people use in their daily lives is truly the devil in disguise. Plastic is an invasive species that has crept into people's lives, unnoticed, for it seemed to be the same as glass. When the horror of plastic was discovered, it was too late for it had already spread worldwide, damaging people's bodies. Plastic has such a detrimental effect to the human body that its benefits are not worth the risks.

Plastic is a very useful material; however, like everything, it has drawbacks. There are many different types of plastic and every type of plastic is used in different equipment. Polyethylene (PE) is the most common kind of plastic with an annual consumption rates exceeding 50 billion pounds a year due to the fact that it is a strong, lightweight, sturdy plastic. Its resistant to concentrated acids, alkalis, and many organic solvents, and its heat-resistant qualities that allows it to heat up to 180°F (82°C) and occasionally at 240°F (116°C) makes it very popular with producers. ("Get In Touch.") Another kind of plastic is polycarbonate that is created from Bisphenol A (BPA). It is a lightweight, high-performing plastic that possesses a unique balance of toughness, optical clarity, high heat resistance, and excellent electric resistance, hence the reasons it is used in a wide variety of common products such as electrical and electronic equipment, automobiles, sports safety equipment, and food and drink containers. Plastic gets into the body through common items such as food and water containers. The chemicals, especially Bisphenal A (BPA), in plastic containers filter into the water or food; the amount of hazardous chemicals increases if the container is heated. (Freinkel). Another way is from breast milk and milk formulas which is the reason why high concentration of BPA is found in infants. Parents pass the plastic chemicals in their body to their child through breast feeding; milk formulas, on the other hand, come from the container. The amount of plastic chemicals in the formula increases if the bottle is heated. It has been discovered that infants that are formula-fed have a higher daily BPA intake than those that are breast-fed. (USA).

Bisphenal A (BPA), also called carboxylic acid, is a synthetic chemical compound that is produced in large amounts, about 2.3 billion pounds per year. If consumed in large amounts, it is quite toxic to the body with many nasty side effects, but isn't that the same with medicine? One of its many side effects is that it interferes with estrogen, a term for estrus-producing compounds that are found in the female sex hormones. It also severely affects the brain; it can make one more aggressive, impair one's learning curve and/or memory. It can also increase the possibility of having cancer, diabetes, obesity, hyperactivity, early puberty, miscarriage, Down's syndrome, Turner syndrome, Klinefelter syndrome, etc. BPA can injury the prostate/mammary glands, alter the prostate and urinary tract, impair, altered, and/or compromised immune system and/or functions as well as the female reproductive development. It is quite easy to say that plastic is truly not good for one's health. Ask a question to yourself, "Are the benefits really worth the cost?" A scientist can go on about how amazing plastic is and how it saved someone's life but they will omit the harsh truth: its effects will be felt by the future generation. If we don't start trying to change the society filled of plastic, then who will? Plastic has already spread worldwide, and it is now very hard to find something that does not contain it. As John F. Kennedy said, "ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country." (What Your Country Can Do For You)
