Look all around us where the ashes have fallen.
The moon shines in the shattered sky,
high above the colorless clouds of destruction.
The ruins show a beautiful dream barren and broken,
never to bear fruit in the hollow desert left.

My eyes fill with tears and I shake my head.
How can something once so alive be left for death?
My fingers brush an old blanket.
Yours. I think, the wolves visible if I look closely.

What happened here, to our little haven?
Misunderstandings, silence, and little communication.
My heart, hurting still, breaks a little more.
I miss you. I tremble and sit down, stirring up dust.

Something catches my eye and I bend over and pick up.
With a sob, I see what I don't want to see, a photograph of us three.
Smiling, eyes glowing, and looking silly; but we are happy.
Carefully I wipe away the dirt, shaking more with every breath.
This is what we should've been…

Look all around us where the ashes have fallen.
The moon shines in the shattered sky,
high above the colorless clouds of destruction.
The ruins show a beautiful dream barren and broken,
never to bear fruit in the hollow desert left.
