Making Our Own Adventures

"Yeah, Ev, I know it's hard, but I can't just stand by as you drown all of Steve's things in the river." said Josh Parkers, in a rather exasperated manner. They had had this conversation before.

"Where are you right now?" Josh's best friend, Evelyn Wheat, replied from her end of the phone call. Completely off topic, mind you.

"Er, the library." responded Josh. "Where are you?"

"I'm in the closet, Josh."

There was a moment of silence.

"Is this code for something?" Josh asked, "Like, are you in the closet, in the closet, or is it-"

"Josh," interrupted Evelyn. "Do you see the supply closet in the corner by the geography section?"

"Um," Josh turned around. "Yes."

"Good, I have been locked in there for three hours."

There was another moment of silence.

Josh approached the closet and turned the key he noticed was still in the lock. He then opened the door for Evelyn to stride out, casually dusting off her shoulders and hanging up her phone.

"Is this where you've been all morning?" asked Josh, though he was afraid he knew the answer.

"I hunger for adventure, Joshua." Evelyn exclaimed, already on her way out the library.

"You know, I'm not sure how much adventure," he said the word with air quotes. "You're going to find in a supply closet."

"I shall make arrangements for us to go questing."

"You missed the French exam."

"I've just got to get out of this concrete box for a while." Evelyn announced as she took the hat off a passing boy and put it on Josh. Josh then took off the hat and put it on the librarian as they left the LRC.

"You missed it because you were in a closet."

"Why don't you join me, Josh?"

"Why were you in a closet?"

"I'm glad you're on board."

"Why would I even ask why you were in a closet?"

"I have no idea what I'd do without you."

"Why wouldn't you be in a closet?"

The two continued their conversation as they walked down the hall. Well, "strutted" would be a more appropriate word. The duo, rarely seen apart, had a unique way of travelling through the school. Indeed, they travel through most places as if they own the ground under their feet. Evelyn always walks slightly ahead, hardly ever looking up from her modified iPhone. Josh is always to her right and seems to avert his gaze from right in front of him, he also often smiles and waves at people walking past in between apologizing for his companion's behaviour. The students and faculty of Little Reswin High are well used to this and avoiding collisions and other incidents where Ev and Josh are concerned are second nature.

The pair of friends exited the school and started making their way across the parking lot. As they passed a small bench surrounded by several freshmen, Joshua picked an unopened Gatorade from one girl's hands. The girl and company seemed too scandalized to do much about it as Josh took a long swig.

"Get in, Josh." Ev said, getting in to her old blue buggy.

"What? Why?"

"Honestly, Joshua, have you been paying any attention at all?"

"Oh, right the quest."

"What do you say?"

"I don't know, Ev. Well, yeah, actually I do. I know I want no part in this." stated Josh as he got in the passenger seat anyway.

After they were both buckled up and ready to go, Evelyn asked, "Are you quite alright, Joshua?"

"Yeah, why wouldn't I be alr- well, actually, now that you mention it, I feel a slight headache coming on."

"Good night, Joshua." Evelyn said as her companion fell unconscious.
