When we got out of Demetri's car the next day at school, a girl with blonde hair, short clothes and a lot of makeup came over and kissed Demetri. Whoa, what? They broke apart and the girl looked straight at me.
"Who is she?" she asked him.
"This is Delilah, my soon to be stepsister. Delilah, meet Jenny, my girlfriend," Demetri said, putting extra emphasis on the girlfriend bit, as though he knew I would like him in some way. So he is completely off limits… figures. I stuck out my hand automatically and she gave a weird look before shaking it.
"So how long have you and Demetri been together?" I asked, readjusting my books in my arms.
"Next month makes it one year!" she replied excitedly. Jenny seemed so down to earth, relaxed, despite her appearance. She practically told me that we were going to be best friends, no matter what. For some reason, I was starting to like her. She hung out with me all day, except for parts of recess and lunch with Demetri, telling me all about the school and my brothers. My last class for the day was PE with Jenny. As we got changed she told me all the good sports the school forced us to do.
We entered the gym to get our names marked off when I noticed a class full of guys on the other side of the gym. And Demetri's best friend was in it. Mason…? I thought as our teacher went through the roll. I was too busy staring at him to realise he was smiling at me. I quickly shifted my eyes to the ground, embarrassed. Today we were playing volleyball, and Jenny was positioned next to me.
"You know, he is single…"
"Mason of course!" The guy's class were playing basketball, and several times Mason swung on the hoop, flexing his biceps. This caused me to get distracted several times, missing the ball. At the end of the lesson, it was darn clear to Jenny I was interested in Mason.
"He's a little mysterious, don't you think?" she asked, swinging her bag over her shoulder.
"I guess…" I said, walking out of the gym and almost straight into Demetri.
"Oh hey I was looking for you! I can't take you home, I have detention," he said before continuing with, "you can either walk or catch the bus. If it hasn't left yet!" I said goodbye to them both and headed for the bus stop. Well, if I knew exactly where it was and didn't spend five minutes deciding with direction to head in. I left the main building and saw it down the stairs, which was now empty. Great… I thought, slowly starting to walk in the direction of home. A few streets down I was thinking deeply to myself that I didn't notice a black Jeep had pulled up beside me and was rolling at the same pace as I walked. I looked up and saw it was Mason. I stopped walking and so did the car.
"Do you want a lift?" he asked, a small smile on his face. The green shirt he was wearing fitted perfectly, and his emo-ish hair made him more irresistible.
"Um…" I said still standing on the path, eventually going and opening the door. I put my seat belt on as he pulled away from the kerb, not saying a word until we'd reached the end of the street.
"So you're Demetri's stepsister? Delilah, right?"
"I'm Mason… I've been his best friend since elementary, I'm on the football team with him…" He looked at me so I awkwardly smiled in return.
"You know, you don't know me… accepting a lift could've been dangerous."
"You might die." He looked seriously at me.
"You might wanna stay focused on the road…" I pointed out, looking out the window.
"You're one of those types?"
"The fussy ones… goes well with your nerdiness…"
"Well, nerds like me don't go for jerks like you,"I snapped, picking up my bag and telling him to pull over.
"I want to get out."
"Your house is four blocks away. You really wanna walk that far?"
"Well if I'm away from you, that's perfect…" I said, getting out. He didn't drive off straight away, instead calling out my name.
"Delilah, I'm sorry!" The way he said my name sounded so… appealing and sexy.
"Please just get back in the car, I don't want us to start off on a bad foot…" I got back in and just stared at him while he drove; observed his facial expressions. Before I knew it we were outside my house.
"Well here is your stop," he said, showing me a small smile.
"Uh thanks for the ride… it was interesting…" I said, opening the door.
"Oh hey what are you doing on Friday night?"
"Nothing… and no I won't go on a date with you."
"Why are you so determined not to have an interest in me?" I shrugged my shoulders.
"Anyway, the school's football match is on, I'd appreciate it if you came to support us… there aren't too many beautiful girls there." I snorted with laughter when I noticed he was being truthful.
"Oh… I'll um consider it," I replied, trying not to show the happiness I had from him calling me that.
