Penny
Standing here, as I lean
Pressed against the window screen,
That summer's eve feel
Washes over me.
As I breathe the humid air,
I can almost feel you there...
Should be asleep,
But I don't care.
There's a penny on the sill.
It must have fallen out
Of your jeans when you were slipping in
Or maybe when you were slipping out.
I want you back beside me,
To help me face the unknown,
Summer romance is not enough –
Autumn don't find me alone.
But if you really have to go,
I promise not to hold you down.
I'll slip back to the darkness,
I promise not to make a sound.
So the next time that I see you,
I'll have the penny in my hand.
I'll slip it back into your pocket,
And I'll try to understand.
