The Killing Joke

The bitter smile stays

On your lips, as night

Falls soft around you.

Your eyes hard in the

Knowledge of pain...

It's a cynic's smile,

An upward grimace

That contains the sum

Of your self-loathing amusement,

And unending pain.

You spread your hands in

Callous disinterest and

Casual helplessness.

It's clear you pity everyone

Who isn't yourself.

The bitter smile is chiseled;

Etched into your face with acid

And Time. The killing joke has

Never been so successful,

Never had so good a target.

"I'll love you forever."
