Chapter 3

I dashed out of my room and down the stairs as fast as I could.

"Mom, I'm going back to the park!" I said as I made my way to the door.

"Okay, but be back soon. Your dad and I want to talk to you about something." she replied. I had already shut the door behind me.

I ran the whole way to the park. When I got there, I saw the same girl I saw sitting next to Alicia on the swings. She was still on the swing, swinging back and forth. I went up to her.

"Have you seen a necklace with a small red pendant and a silver chain?" I asked. She just stared at me for a second. She seemed surprised that I was talking to her. Then she got a frightened look on her face and shook her head. She got off the swing, and went straight towards the nearest tree. I was about to tell her to watch out, but she had already run straight into the tree and disappeared.

"How…?" I felt my mouth get dry. I have to find my necklace, I thought. I tried retracing my steps, but that didn't work. Then I remembered the woman who I was talking to before. I looked around to see if maybe she had come back. Sure enough the woman was there sitting on a park bench, staring at me. Once again the chill I had before came back. I took a deep breath, and walked over to her.

"Have you seen a necklace with a red pendant?" I asked. "The pendant looks like it has a flame in it."

Her eyes widened after I finished speaking. It happened really fast, so I almost didn't notice. She looked me straight in the eyes. It seemed like she was looking for something.

"I haven't seen anything like that." she answered. For some reason I thought I saw the shadows move towards us. She stood up and I took a step back. "I will be leaving now." she said and quickly left. I let out the breath I was holding.

That woman…

Never mind.

After looking for about another fifteen minutes, I decided to back to my house. I let out a sigh as I walked into the house. I went back up to my room. I checked all of my drawers, my closet, and under all of my furniture. Where was it!? I laid flat on my back on my bed. I stared at the ceiling, wondering what happened to my necklace. I had a bad feeling about my necklace going missing.

"Hallie!" I heard my Dad yell.

"Coming!" I yelled back, getting off the bed. I went down stairs and saw that Mom, Dad, and Alicia were sitting at the table. Alicia looked really nervous, swinging her legs back and forth. "What's going on?" I asked.

"Remember, I said I needed to talk to you." Mom replied. I gave her a look, and walked towards the table. I sat down and waited for someone to start talking.

"So…" I started awkwardly. Mom and Dad shared a look. It was like one was telling the other, I'm not going to talk first, and honestly it worried me. Mom took a deep breath and began.

"Sweetie," Mom started. "We haven't been completely honest with you. All I ask is that you don't interrupt us while we explain." I nodded my head, and waited for them to explain.

"Fifteen years ago you dad and I wanted to have a child very badly, but I could never get pregnant. One day, just when we were about to give up, we found a baby girl on our doorstep." Mom said, smiling sadly at me. Fifteen years ago, that was…

My eyes widened.

Oh god.
