Later in the evening, when I was tidying up around the office, Kent strolled over to me. I smiled briefly at him, then continued my work. He watched me for a few moments, studying my diligent work habits, before he mentioned to me, "You know, he actually really likes you."
I looked up at him with a teasing mask upon my face, "Yeah, I'm sure he does," then continued straightening magazines on the coffee table in the sitting room.
"I'm serious, he would have fired you on day one if you legitimately bothered him," I straightened up a bit. I hadn't thought of that.
"And the reason he acts so insufferably?" I interrogated.
"He used to do the same thing to me," Kent smiled.
"Huh. Maybe you're right Kent." I kind of liked this Kent guy. He seemed nice.
"Of course I'm right little girl!" Kent gloated.
At that point, my positive outlook on Kent took a complete 180.
"What did you just call me?" my eyes narrowed.
"Oh, dear. Definitely should not have done that, Kent." Mike whimsically commented as he strolled into the room.
"How DARE you!" I said through gritted teeth, "Are you calling me short?"
"Uh...no. I just..." before Kent could justify his light-hearted term of endearment, I crudely plowed through him and into the adjoining room.
"I will get you for that, Kent!" I spat.
The rest of that evening and the next day passed rather uneventfully. Most days normally did. As annoying as my boss was, I looked forward to my work.I loved the rush of chasing criminals and solving mysteries. I couldn't imagine not having such a unique opportunity. I drove brisquely to Mikes office, and when I arrived...
"Elise, we have a case." Mike said as he pulled a leather jacket over his baseball tee.
"Already?" I asked, surprised.
"Yes. And Kent will be joining us."
"Why him?" I whined.
"He is smart, and he knows a lot about the forensic sciences. He will be helpful."
"I probably have a higher I.Q. than that buffoon." I spouted, not expecting the detective to take me seriously.
But he did.
He studied me for a moment. Than a light smirk sliced through his smooth features. "Yes, you're probably right." He picked up an ipad that he always used for cases, and headed out the door.
"I HEARD THAT!" Kent roared as he tumbled after him.
It seems Mike has high expectations for me. I thought to myself. Better not let him down. I grinned like a monkey as I hastened to follow after Mike and the buffoon.
A/N Don't worry, Elise won't actually hate Kent, but they will be more for comic relief :) Yay! More soon!
