My name is Zatanna, and I'm the type of girl who has a huge attitude problem but can be goofy at the same time. I'm one of a kind, I guess. I only have a few close friends who appreciate my sense of humour and idiocy, but the other people around here don't really understand that about me. To all the girls out there who like a guy, I'm going to tell you my story about the cons about having a crush on someone. The pros are a story for another day.
Here are a few cons:
Number One: Clumsiness
I don't know if I mentioned it before, but I'm probably the biggest klutz as well, especially around Tristan, who is the guy I like at school. He's cute, funny and really smart. He has dark brown hair, tanned skin and the brightest green ever. We hardly ever talk though because at my school, there's thing which I like to refer as 'the barrier'. I'm on the unpopular side, while he is on the other with all the pretty girls and jerk-ass boys.
Anyway, it was about half-way through July, almost the end of Term 2. We had recently finished our classes for Semester One, and now we were studying for our exams. Since my friends said they would be there in the morning to study for the exam we all had in the afternoon, English, I decided to go in early as well.
Tristan had made the decision to come in early with his friends. Oh, no, it gets better.
So, Laura and Brianna, or Bree, (my friends) were seated at the back of the library with me, while Tristan and his stupid friends were sitting cross from us. In order to get to our seats, we had to walk between the computer banks and their chairs and then right around the table. It seemed fine, until we decided to go grab something to eat during the lunch break.
We all went to the canteen, picked and payed for our meals before sitting at one of the tables. That's when the giggling started.
"Zee, he was totally staring at you!" Bree laughed, shoving a chip in her mouth. Bree was gorgeous; she had short red hair that sat in a bob cut, pale skin that made her fiery hair look all that more vibrant and also had chocolate-brown eyes. A lot of guys had asked her out, but being the innocent and oblivious girl she is, had turned them all down in favour of her boyfriend, Oliver, who was a nerd. Oliver was cute in his own way, but not the type of guy that I would go for. He was like a brother to me as well, so that might be an attribute to my taste for him. We had become close after he had nervously come up to me to ask for advice on how to ask out the redhead.
"He was not!" I denied, tempted to pull down my grey beanie so it covered my whole face and not only my black hair because my usually olive cheeks were extremely red. "He wouldn't even turn to look my way if I was standing there naked with flashing light bulbs around my body."
"Don't be so hard on yourself; you never know. He could like you as well." Laura said reasonably. I don't get it. How did I seem so out-of-place compared to my friends? Both of them were the prettiest girls ever, and were practically on the line of the barrier. Why did they choose to hang out with me again? Oh, right, because they're the best people in the world.
Laura had long, blonde hair that she always wore in a high ponytail with coloured ribbons. Her hair was mostly straight but had slight kinks at the bottom from a low ponytail she must have had in her hair earlier. She had sun-kissed skin from being in the sun so much, even though her tan should've gone away because we were in the middle of Winter. To top off her beauty, she had grey eyes that turned in a cobalt blue when she was in the sun or under a bright light.
"There is no way he'd like me back. The only real impression of me he has is a short-tempered goofball with an attitude problem." I answered stubbornly, shifting my blue eyes to my shepherd's pie in my hand. "Can we talk about something else, please?"
About ten minutes later, all of us had finished our lunch and we walked back to the library. I couldn't help but stare at my knee-high boots the whole time because thinking about how Tristan could never like a girl like me kind of got me a bit depressed. Pathetic, right?
When we got to the section of the library where our stuff was, Tristan was chatting with his mates. He turned around when he noticed that my friends and I had returned, and he shot me a tiny smile. I immediately blushed, tripping over the leg of his chair and almost falling flat on my face.
Laura and Bree had already made it back to their seats when Tristan's friends erupted in laughter.
I immediately apologised and hurried back to my spot while limping slightly. Sheesh, that hurt.
Number Two: Teasing
When my friends found about whom I liked, they practically went nuts. Their jaws dropped when they found out how long I had been keeping the secret and why they hadn't noticed, though they had admitted they had their suspicions, and they squealed, almost immediately beginning to tease me. We were sitting at one of the tables in the yard when I had confessed.
"Oh, Zatanna's in luuurve!" the redhead said, poking my arm while she grinned slyly.
"No I don't. I just… Sort of-maybe have a crush on him?" I answered uncertainly, rubbing my arm in embarrassment. Ugh, why did I tell them again?
"Bree, we have to play matchmaker between them!"
"Yes!"
"No, guys…"
"I can't believe I didn't notice earlier that you liked him. He's been looking at you during class as well, you know." Bree said, nudging Laura who giggled behind her hand. Honestly, I was about to kill my friends.
Laura glanced behind her and began laughing harder behind her hand, her head falling into the crook of her arm to stifle the odd sounds she was making. Bree and I looked at each other in confusion, before turning to see what she was looking at, and sure enough, there he was. He was standing with his friends, standing there as he glanced around coolly. Bree soon followed Laura's lead and began laughing her head off as well while I quickly turned away, my face going red. I slapped them both on the arm to make them stop and play it cool, but neither of them stopped.
I never thought Laura would tease me as much as she did. She was usually the practical and reasonable one of our little group while Bree and I were the ones who were allowed to play around. But apparently I was wrong in this case.
Number Three: Negative Thoughts
I am also a girl who is addicted to the world of fandoms. I read fan fiction and wrote it occasionally, no matter how weird my friends thought it was, and I was practically addicted to Tumblr. I was a total fan girl as well when it came to my favourite pairings or TV shows. Not only those things, but to the celebrities I practically drooled over. A little pathetic, right?
Anyway, I was reading some fan fiction on my iPod at eleven o'clock at night a couple of months ago, and it was a romance story, with a lot of comedy and cute fluff mixed in. I loved stories like that. When I got to a part in the story when the guy confessed to the girl to the girl, my thoughts immediately drifted to Tristan, knowing that he would never even give me the time of the day to even consider me as dating material. It was depressing to think like that, but I couldn't help it.
When had my priorities changed? Sure, school, friends and family were still right at the top, but I never realised I liked Tristan that much to almost cry over him when nothing had happened. Why was I doing this to myself? Was this healthy? Probably not. I felt my heart beat even faster as I thought about him more. My gosh, this is bad.
This is like the night I finally admitted to myself or realised that I actually liked him. I began freaking out, my eyes widening and almost tearing my hair out. I had whacked my face into my pillow more times than I dared to count, wondering what was wrong with me. I think I had just turned fifteen and so, for a girl who had never seriously liked a guy before, it was quite scary. Sure, I had little crushes here and there, but this was the first real one.
It has been about a year since then, so…
I think those three are the main ones. Anyway, a lot has happened since then, and let's just say that I'm extremely happy at the moment. Now I'm smiling like an idiot. Also, a bit of advice to all you girls out there; don't give up. He might notice you eventually and give you a chance.
I got my happy ending, so can you.
Now if you excuse me, I have to go get ready for… something.
~Zee xx
P.S. Let's just say it has something to do with Tristan. ;)
Zatanna quickly stopped typing on her blog and opened up her Skype where she quickly video-called Laura and Bree into a group chat before pushing away from her laptop. She was now smiling like an idiot as she made her way towards her cupboard to find some clothes to wear. She was very giddy; excited for the event.
"Zee! Have you picked an outfit, yet?" Bree asked as she leaned forward into the webcam. Laura was eating pasta at her computer while she watched her friends.
"That's why I called you guys so I can ask for your opinion. I mean, it's my first date with him, so I want to make a good impression..." she said shyly, going through her clothes. "I swear, it's like I have nothing to wear."
"I'd come over, but mum said that I have to stay home tonight." Laura piped up, placing her empty bowl and fork down on the desk. "I'm so happy for you, Zatanna! Tristan finally made a move on you. I told you that he liked you!"
"Oh, shut up. Anyway, help?"
"Is it a casual date?"
"He didn't really specify."
Bree sighed, face-palming at her friend's idiocy. "You're supposed to ask."
"I was still recovering from shock, okay? How often is it that the boy I really like comes up and asks me if I want to go out with him in front of practically our whole year level at the end of lunch?"
"Okay, okay. Then go dressy casual. A nice top and a pair of skinny jeans."
"My blue ones?"
"Yeah, with your chocolate-brown wedges!" Laura said, referring to the ankle high boots which her friend owned. "I need to borrow them someday, because those things are awesome."
Zatanna just laughed in response. "Sure, anytime. Now, guys, what top? And should I bring a cardigan? How should I wear my hair?"
"Your hair looks amazing down." Bree answered. The redhead loved long hair, but had cut her own last year due to it getting annoying her. Now she was majorly regretting that decision, no matter how much everyone told her that her bob cut looked good on her. "I want your hair. It's straight at the top and then goes into awesome curls at the bottom. I want that..."
Both Zatanna and Laura rolled their eyes at their friend's antics.
"Anyway, for your top, why not that grey one with the lacy pattern on the front?" the blonde girl suggested with a smile.
"Thanks, guys!" Zatanna cheered, pulling the outfit off the hangers and placing them on her double bed before reaching in for her ankle boots.
The black-haired girl stood staring at her reflection in her full-length mirror that was hanging off the back of her door. She sighed nervously, rubbing her sweaty hands together. She had taken her friend's advice on the outfit and hair, only wearing a few bobby pins to pin some stray hairs back while she left her side bangs down. She was wearing were watch on her left wrist and on her right wrist were a few bangles.
"Zatanna! Your friend is here!" called her mother from the staircase. Zatanna grinned excitedly, hurriedly grabbed her bag and rushed down the stairs towards the door where her father was glaring at a figure in the doorway. She nervously walked over to the exit to her home, and glanced up at her dad.
"Papa?" she asked cautiously. He was glaring at the figure, not turning to meet his daughter's gaze. Zatanna looked away and turned her focus on Tristan who was standing there awkwardly, rubbing the back of his neck.
"Uh, hey, Zatanna." he greeted with a goofy half-smile. She smiled back sheepishly. Her mother placed a hand on her husband's arm to pull him away from the door, making him turn his gaze away to glance at Zatanna.
"I want you home by nine, understand?"
"Yes, dad." she answered.
"I promise I'll have her back by then, Mr and Mrs Tenassi." Tristan said with a respectful nod at her parents. Her mother smiled back at him while her father just glared. Tristan couldn't help but gulp, before Zatanna ushered him away from the door.
"See you later!" she called behind her.
Since Zatanna lived close to the local shopping centre, the two decided to go see a movie. She was surprised when he payed for her own ticket, but she managed to pay for the popcorn before he had the chance. It wasn't packed which was good, which meant the two could sit practically anywhere. They had decided to see Pitch Perfect, seeing as it had comedy in it as well instead of being a sappy romance. Zatanna didn't like cheesy movies and things like that anyway.
About half-way through the movie, Tristan had reached for her hand, lacing their fingers together. She glanced up at him in surprise while he kept his gaze on the screen. She couldn't tell because of the dark, but his cheeks were blushing slightly. She grinned, and squeezed his hand with her's which caused him to smile at her.
"So, Tristan..." she began. He raised an eyebrow, motioning for her to continue. "Why did you ask me out? I thought you wouldn't like me..."
"I do like you... A lot, actually. I didn't know how to ask you out, so I've put it off until now. Then there was also that I wasn't sure if you liked me back. Then I saw your blog post from a couple of weeks ago; the one where you kept mentioning this guy you liked." he explained as her jaw dropped.
"You read my blog?"
"I do." he answered with a nod. "You were describing a guy that seemed a lot like me... And I figured it out in the end. Then there was also the hints that you dropped at school. Like tripping in the library, blushing around me, yelling at every other guy except me..."
Suddenly, the song from The Breakfast Club credits began playing from the speakers because it was included in the movie, and Zatanna couldn't help but fist-pump her hand in the air the same time that Bender did when he was walking down the football field. Tristan laughed at her antics while she just grinned back.
"I couldn't help it, I'm just... Wow."
"Yeah, it's like that for me too."
"I had an awesome time with you tonight, Zatanna." Tristan said as the two walked back to the girl's house. "I really hope that we can do this again." he added, his face down out of embarrassment before looking up at her with a shy half-smile. She never realised that he was this shy. Was he like this with other girls whom he had gone out with before her?
"Me too." she responded. They were soon at her front door. She unlocked the door, and when she turned around to say goodbye, she saw that he was really close. "Tristan?"
Seeing as he was a little taller than her, she had to look up at him. The corners of his lips were tugging as he wet them. Her eyes almost widened at the action, finally realising what he wanted to do. He slowly leaned into her, their foreheads touching but he paused, glancing at her as if asking for her permission.
"Can I?" he whispered, looking down so his dark lashes hid his bright green eyes. She nodded, biting her lip as he finally the closed space between them. She immediately leaned back into him while he cupped her face with one hand and placed the other on her hip. She wrapped her arms around his neck as she tried to pull him closer. A few moments later, they pulled away and they both couldn't chuckle quietly.
"Be my girlfriend?" he asked, his green eyes practically boring into her's.
"Yeah."
Their intimate moment was interrupted by the sound of the door opening and a torch being directed at them. Immediately, they jumped away from each other when they realised it was Zatanna's father.
"You got my daughter home by 8.30. No public display of affection while I'm around, and welcome to the family."
"Dad!"
By school the next day, practically everyone had heard the news that he was dating someone because Tristan had changed his Facebook relationship status that same morning. Zatanna hadn't accepted the request yet because she hadn't gotten the chance to log on yet, so no one knew except Bree, Laura and a few close friends of his.
He was practically bombarded with questions as soon as he got to school the next day.
"Bro, why didn't tell me you were dating someone?"
"Who is she?"
"Is she hot?"
"Knowing Tristan, she's an absolute babe!"
Tristan couldn't help but smile at that comment. Of course he thought that she was gorgeous. He had for a while now, and she her personality was even better. "She's awesome. That's all I'm saying."
When Zatanna rocked up to school, she had headphones in her ear and was on her phone. She smiled at the request that Tristan had sent and accepted it. So they were Facebook official, which implied that he was serious about liking her. Shoving her phone in her pocket, she spotted her newly-dubbed boyfriend and smiled, and waved. He grinned back at her, and motioned for to come over. His friends looked confused, and her smile dropped into a nervous frown. She had forgotten about the people at school.
He moved past them, and leaned down to kiss her quickly. She widened her eyes in surprise but just went along with it, kissing him back. They both heard wolf-whistles in the background, and the two pulled away out of embarassment.
"So, you're the one who managed to tame Tenassi, huh?" one of the guys laughed, nudging Tristan. He just laughed and shrugged, lacing their fingers together.
"I guess so."
So, I've been dating Tristan for about a month, and the surprise of it has finally died down, but there are people who are still only just realising that we are in fact together. We are a bit of an odd combination, with him being the popular, laid-back guy whereas I'm the temperamental outsider, but honestly, we don't care. We're happy and that's all that matters.
When I said that I'd make a list of pros about liking someone, I was lying. I don't want to do it because I'm happy. I don't need to list the perks because I'm sure all of you already know them. Bree and Laura definitely know. Speaking of Lauz, now all we need to do is play match-maker for her. This is going to be fun. ;)
Anyway, I'm only doing a quick update because I'm on my way to Bree's for a sleepover. She's so proud that about my 'achievement', as she calls it, and is celebrating it by hosting a slumber party. Awesome, right? I have the best friends. Though it's a little embarrassing...
Okay, I gotta go now. Bye guys!

A/N: ...Wow. I don't think I've ever written that much fluff. It's almost embarassing. This fic was originally just supposed to be listing the cons and stuff, and it was supposed to be funny, but look what it turned into! It's some big fluff-ball! -.- Anyway, I hope you enjoyed it. If you're wondering where I got Zatanna's name, I got it from a show that I watch called Young Justice. The character isn't my absolute favourite, but I love the name. Plus, she's Italian, like me, so yeah. :)
I'm Australian, as well, which is why the seasons and school references might be a bit weird to you. I'm using my own times for this instead of American-ising the stuff like I do on if the show is American or dubbed by Americans or whatever.
Anyway, please review. :) It's my first fic on here, so I'm a little nervous about posting my original pieces for people all over the world to see. :S
Also, please keep an eye out for future fics! Thanks! :D
