i swallow hearts, gold and purple, green,
black and blue
and they light me up from the inside,
a sea-captain's stained glass window
across my chest for all to see.
i swallow hearts and they breathe for me-
a symphony, a way out and a lifeline,
the glass above the fire.
reflecting promises, rewritten time
and time again-
i'd rather just have the shimmer.
these hearts, they give me kaleidoscope eyes
and a friend when i fall asleep.
