A/N Hope you're all enjoying this sappy ridiculous drama! I sure liked writing it!
CHAPTER EIGHT: Confessions
I slammed the door violently as Red deposited Ace-no, Lady Velencia-on the bed, Alessio fretting behind.
"Jester, you can't hurt her!" he cried, and I threw my sheathed dagger at him, sending him squealing behind Red for safety.
"Get out, both of you," I snarled, and he gave me a leveled look before he placed a much friendlier arm than I liked around Alessio and led him out of the room. I turned to Velencia, stomach roiling with anger. Her aqua eyes stared at me from behind her mask without the slightest hint of fear, but there was anger and confusion.
"How are you connected to Alessio?" She asked, and I made my way to the window slowly, watching her. We were unarmed, the both of us, and trapped together alone.
"I've taken care of him his whole life. My thievery as you so eloquently put it has been solely for survival. And you, Consul Velencia? Your title and position should give no cause for your secondary occupation. Why do you kill us then, Milady?" I asked sharply, looming over her and jerking her mask away violently. "For the thrill of the kill? To watch the light fade from our eyes?" I demanded, and she drew a shaky breath, her eyes steely.
"Why is none of your concern. If you plan to kill me then do so and be done with it. I tire of your games," she quipped, and I whirled from where I faced the window, fists clenching convulsively.
"I'm playing games? You, my dearest Consul, are the expert player of games here. Do you always lure your quarry in with a kiss and then strike? Or am I special?" I snarled, and she blinked as if honestly confused.
"W-What? You kissed me, Jester, don't-"
"No, milady, not that time. You knew all along, didn't you? Who I was? That's why you took my gondola every day. It was a way to get closer and then spring the trap when I least expected it! You viper, I should have known," I muttered, turning my back on her.
"What are you talking about?" She asked, frustrated, and I whipped around, tearing my mask from my face and throwing it at her in my fury.
"As if you didn't know!"
It became clear. Those green eyes were Jester's and Dante's. "Dante..."
"Yes, It's me! Now, answer me!"
I gasped for air, but nothing came. How was it that they were connected? How did I not realize how close we really were all the time?
"Dante, please understand that I had no idea you were one in the same, I -"
"That's a lie! You perfectly knew, planning to get me settled into your traps. Try to leave me defenseless or helpless to your whim so you can kill me?"
"I swear, I had no idea." I was on the breaking point now, pouring my soul and my tears. "Please, Dante, understand-" I say, trying to cradle his face as I stood.
He smacked down my hand and scoffed. "How can I understand? What is there to understand? Understand how you can through my heart around while wanting me dead?"
I understood myself now. He thought that I was playing at his heart strings to get him as my bounty. I try to speak, but he begins, this time, not as angry. "I was falling for you, both of you. Mainly the Velencia side, thinking a rich girl could fall for a guy like me..."
I try to see his face as it's tilted to the ground, but I see tears falling to the ground.
"I'm sorry. I promise, I did not deceive you for a bounty. I was unaware of your 2 identities as you were of mine. If you truly loved me, you'd believe me," I say trying to get him to look at me, this time, letting me touch him.
"What makes you think I want to trust you now? You wanted me dead, and you would not stop for it."
"Dante, it was Jester I wanted dead, and I did sort of stop when you came into my home that one evening. At that point, I wasn't worried about killing you because, I wanted your warm body against mine. Not a cold dead one."
He sighs. I can't think of anything else to say to convince him, so I try to sit him down, which he does, and calm him a bit. I sit next to him, rubbing his back, moving his hair out of his face for me to see his face. And now, I was truly seeing him. By wanting to kill Jester, I wanted to kill Dante. They were the same person, and I have to take him and all of him if I want this to work.
"Dante... I want you to listen to me... I love you. And I love both sides of you. Please see that that is true. You've seen all of me and I want you to think if you feel the same. Do you love me?"
He hesitates. So I go ahead. "I care about you, whether you are Dante or Jester, I think I loved you both ways. And I know it's not easy to understand how I could have not known, but you didn't. So, am I really not much different than you? No, because you didn't realize I was the same person. I would deceive you, Dante."
I stared her down, waiting for her to go on, but neither of us made a move. She sighed, sitting on the edge of the bed and brushing her skirts off.
"Believe whatever you want. Kill me if you must. But do what it is you're going to do and just get it over with," she said, snapping fire as she stared into my eyes. I stepped closer, barely a breath of air between us. This was Lady Velencia, the woman I had found myself falling in love with, the elegant and eye-catching Consul I couldn't stay away from even when I discovered her engaged status. I lifted a hand, brushing a stray curl away from her face. She never even flinched, those aquamarine eyes glittering in the darkness.
"Velencia..." I murmured, my hand drifting from her cheek to her neck, and her breath stuttered. She had told me she loved me, and I realized that I loved her too, both sides of her. Ace was the flirtatious and dangerous secret hiding behind Velencia's eyes.
I don't know who moved first, but suddenly we were in each other's arms, lips and hands and fingers grasping. She broke away, pushing my hair from my face with a breathless smile.
"I love you too, Velencia. I've been so wrong," I admitted, and she grinned brightly, forehead touching mine. We just laughed for a moment, unsure what to say next in light of our revelation. I took her hands, still connected at the brow, and pressed them to my heart.
"What do we do now?" she asked softly, and I glanced to the window where the night held every possibility for us. An idea formed inside my mind, and I gripped her hands excitedly.
"Come away with me!" I cried, and she blinked in astonishment.
"Away where?" She asked, and I pulled her to the window, gesturing out into the darkness.
"Anywhere! Paris, Berlin, Rome, London-anywhere you want," I promised, and she smiled like starlight in reply.
"Then we'd better get going."
