Matt just shook his head.
"So what now?" I asked.
"Now, we wait. I suppose." He cracked his knuckles irritatingly slowly.
"We should probably get to know each other if we're going to be stuck with each other for the next two weeks. I'll start. I'm a junior at Harvard, and majoring in History."
He glanced around the room, and grabbed a stress ball off Thomas' desk. He tossed it from one hand to another. "I am a senior at Stanford, and majoring in engineering." He replied apathetically.
"Cool, that's very interesting. I've heard Stanford's great." I said, trying to sound enthusiastic.
"Mmmhmm." He murmured, putting his feet up on the desk.
So this is how it's going to be.
"I'll assume you're super excited for the trip." I said sarcastically.
"I don't see why I'm going anyway. You're the history major; you'll know what you're doing."
I was apt to give my reasons. "What happens when the device malfunctions and I'm stuck by myself? Knowing when the American Revolution ended is really going to help me then." I retorted, putting my chin on my folded hands; and waited for his brilliant reply.
"It's not going to malfunction. Do you know how long they've probably been working on this thing? They'll have gone into extensive testing before even attempting to send humans through a time portal, or whatever it is." He said dismissively.
"Ok then, what about Booth?" I challenged. "How am I going to disarm a man with a gun by myself? I'll need to create some distraction, and it will be pretty difficult to find a volunteer to help kill the one of the best–known actors of American theatre world."
"Fine!" He threw hands up exasperatedly in the air. "You win! Are you happy now? You're a weak girl that can't do anything, and needs a man to defend her."
"If you don't want to come with me, then maybe we should get Thomas to replace you. Don't think I'm going to go back in time with an egotistical, male chauvinistic, jerk—" I snapped, rising out of my chair.
"Whoa, whoa. What's going on in here?" Thomas looked at the two of us with concern. I was standing there seething with my teeth grit tight, and fists balled, while pretty boy was still tossing around the stress ball.
"I refuse to work with him." I stated defiantly, and crossed my arms.
He raised a quizzical eyebrow. "What could you two possibly have found to fight about? I was gone for two minutes, and you're already at each other's throats."
Matt grunted. "More like Elsie's at mine."
I whipped my head in his direction, flashing him a deadly glare. "Not yet, I'm not; but just keep talking with that self-centered tone and I will be."
"Settle down, children." Thomas scolded. "You two are twenty plus years old, grow up. Matt, you are staying in this program; you agreed to it and signed papers. And Elsie," He sighed. "You're just going to have to put up with him. So shut it."
My eyes went wide like saucers, at his bewildering words, and I almost opened my mouth to protest but thought better of it. It closed shut with a sound snap.
"Now I want you guys to get along, because you're leaving in less than 24 hours."
"You will learn to like each other, or at least work with each other if you want to make it back. This mission is wholly teamwork."
"But in all seriousness, could you have found two less compatible people?" I shook my head.
"Really?" Matt agreed.
"It's not like I'm asking you guys to go to a Vegas wedding chapel and get married right now. I'm asking you to work together for a fortnight."
After a long pause of consideration, I looked grudgingly at Matt, and sighed. "I'll try if you will."
"Fine." He agreed.
"Now shake on it." Thomas instructed.
We obeyed reluctantly, and I cringed when we shook, his hands were cold and clammy.
Although we didn't like each other, I saw a mutual agreement when my eyes met his. We would get through this together. Once we arrived back home we wouldn't speak to each other ever again. No more interaction, this was business, purely business. We would be civil to survive.
